Consider adding Technical Writing (WRIT 240) to your spring schedule. The class meets from 1 to 1:50 p.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Here’s a few reasons to add it:

• Technical Writing is an extremely practical course that will help anyone who plans to work in an organization (business, research, education, nonprofit) write more effective reports, letters, memos and emails.
• It will look good on your resume. Surveys tell us that effective writing skills are at the top of employers’ lists in the hiring process.
• The instructor, Gary Tandy, has 15 years of experience as a full-time and contract technical writer for business and educational organizations.
• While this class may have the most direct application to science, engineering and business majors, liberal arts or humanities majors can also benefit. The major writing project for the class can be tailored to your major or career interest.

A beginning guitar class will be offered on campus this fall for credit. Sign up and add some fun to your schedule and learn a new skill!

The class is designed for those new to the guitar who want to learn in a fun group setting. Learn the skills to play all your favorite rock, folk, pop and worship songs. No experience is necessary, but you must have your own guitar. The class is MUSI 250-A (Wednesdays/Fridays, 3:20-4:30 p.m.).

George Fox’s yearbook publication is currently seeking passionate, collaborative and creatively minded photographers and writers to help create this year’s edition of The Student Collective. If you are interested in joining the team, please take five minutes to complete the application found here.

According to some polls (Department of Human Services, Oregon Health Plan, etc.), at least 25 percent of Newberg lies beneath the national poverty line. Helping those in need is a very special calling, but often goes undefined.

One way to give back to the community is by mentoring youth. Little Bruins is a youth mentoring program. Unlike in the past, George Fox is partnering with various agencies from the Newberg School District to provide multiple volunteer avenues to mentor youth, including:

• One-on-one
• Big Bruin/Little Bruin mentoring with elementary and middle schoolers
• MyZone middle school activity center, and
• AVID tutoring program for adolescents

If you are interested in giving back to the community and gaining valuable experience working with youth, come to the Little Bruins info session on Wednesday, Sept. 7, in Bauman Auditorium just after Vespers. You have the opportunity to make a real difference in these young people’s lives.

Need some help as a new semester gets underway? In an Academic Resource Center-sponsored workshop, “Mischief Managed: How to Start the Semester Off Well,” Rick Muthiah, director of learning support services, will cover topics that include how to manage your time, build relationships with professors and develop study strategies.

All are welcome to the second Liberal Arts and Critical Issues presentation tonight (Monday), when Gulzar Ahmed, co-founder of the Islamic Society of Greater Portland and past president of the American Muslim Alliance, speaks in Hoover 105. The same presentation will be made from 5 to 6 p.m. and from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m.

Ahmed is co-chair of the Interfaith Council of Greater Portland and a board member of the Institute for Christian-Muslim Understanding. He speaks at various churches, schools and organizations on the subjects of Islam, interfaith relations, and the importance of promoting understanding and cooperation between various faiths. The evening’s original speaker, Wajdi Said, was unable to speak.
