‘How to Say No and Not Get Fired’ session open to all tonight

Interested in learning about successful communication in the workplace? Want to know how to set boundaries and say no, while still appealing to your future employers? Come to the “How to Say No and Not Get Fired” session tonight (Thursday) at 6:30 p.m. in Canyons Commons.

The communication department is hosting Natalie Gould, a 2010 journalism graduate currently employed at an award-winning digital marketing agency in Dallas, Texas. Natalie will give a brief presentation at 7 p.m. on creating boundaries and being successful in the workplace, followed by a Q&A session.

Bruin women host Whitman tonight in NWC Tournament semifinals

Basketball season continues at 7 p.m. tonight (Thursday), when our women’s team hosts Whitman College in Miller Gymnasium in the Northwest Conference Tournament semifinals. The winner advances to the conference championships to play for an automatic spot in the NCAA Tournament. The men will also play Whitman College Thursday night on the road.

Because this is a Northwest Conference tournament event, staff and faculty have to pay for entry ($6 for adults; $3 for seniors over 65 and children under 12), but George Fox students are still admitted for free. Let’s pack Miller Gymnasium and cheer our Bruins to victory!

Veteran honor cords available for commencement ceremony

‘The Wineskin’ is now accepting submissions

The Wineskin, the university’s student literary and art magazine, is now accepting submissions for the Spring 2017 issue. If you are a writer, photographer or artist, this is a great chance to get your work published in a journal.

This issue’s theme is “Black/White, Day/Night.” The Wineskin is particularly looking for pieces dealing with the relationship of opposites and oppositional forces. Feel free to interpret this creatively – you are the artist! We are asking for:

  • Fiction & Non-Fiction Prose: 750-word limit, must be a stand-alone piece (no book excerpts)
  • Poetry: Three-submission limit
  • Photography: Black and white; include title and send as a 300 dpi image
  • Art: Black and white; include 300 dpi image (The Wineskin is happy to take a quality image for you – email for more information!)

Not all pieces will be selected, but feel free to submit your best work by Monday, March 20. Email any questions and/or submission(s) to gfuwineskin@gmail.com. Please email submissions as an attached document.

Come hear talk on cosmology and theology tonight in EHS 102

Phil Smith, professor of philosophy, will give a lecture for the Science and Religion Club tonight (Thursday) at 7 p.m. in EHS 102. All are welcome to join us!

Professor Smith will be introducing some interesting theological speculations that have come out recently regarding science and cosmology, and if we are really lucky he might even talk about aliens. Also, there will be pizza!

Registration open for ‘Beat Baker’ 5K run on March 18

Come run against President Robin Baker in the first “Beat Baker” 5K run throughout Newberg on Saturday, March 18, at 8 a.m.

The race entry is only $10 for students and $25 for the general public and includes a T-shirt and access to the health fair expo to follow. In addition, those beat President Baker in the race will receive a sticker and bragging rights. Consider joining us in promoting health and wellness while raising funds to continue bettering health care in Yamhill County and beyond.

You can register for the run here. The event is part of a Health and Wellness Week (March 13-18) that includes nutrition, exercise and behavioral classes, a Corporate Games competition, 5K and 10K runs, and a pool party for children with special needs. More on the week is available at this link.
