Tonight: Ambassador Harriet Isom shares about her experiences abroad

All are to view selections from the Harriet Isom Collection: “Vignettes of the Dani and Tuareg Peoples.” This exhibition will feature selections of photographs, art objects and cultural artifacts representing the Dani people group of New Guinea and the Tuareg people of Niger.

Ambassador Isom will give a public lecture on the exhibit and her time with these people groups tonight (Monday) at 6 p.m. at the Chehalem Cultural Center ballroom. A reception to open the exhibit follows at 7 p.m. in the Hoover lobby.

Isom was a career foreign service officer from 1961 to 1996, assigned to embassies in Asia and Africa. During her last decade in the Foreign Service, she served as U.S. Ambassador to Laos, Benin and Cameroon.

All invited to attend Fall Justice Conference with special guest Curtis Acosta

In Celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, the Center for Peace & Justice welcomes Curtis Acosta to campus on Monday, Oct. 15, from 7 to 8 p.m. in Canyon Commons.

Acosta is an assistant professor in Language and Culture in Education at the University of Arizona South, and founder of Acosta Latino Learning Partnership and Acosta Educational Partnership. He is a teacher who fought to keep his outlawed ethnic studies classes alive. He will focus on the recent federal court victory, and speak about his journey and the importance of Mexican-American heritage studies.

Want to study abroad? Come to meeting tomorrow

Are you interested in studying abroad? The Center for Study Abroad will be hosting an information meeting tomorrow (Tuesday) at 6 p.m. in EHS 125.

Come to the meeting for more details about specific programs, the application process, and application due dates. Someone from the registrar’s office will be there to answer questions about classes and transfer credits. Study abroad ambassadors will also be in attendance to answer questions and offer guidance.

Get to know students from another culture through new program

The Office of International Student Development has organized a program designed to match international students with American students to learn about global perspectives and differences between cultures.

Through a regular meeting time to share your culture and learn about another with your partner, you will gain a broader cultural awareness, friendship and Cultural Partner Program certificate.

Students meet for 30 to 50 minutes per week for eight weeks. Click on this Google Doc to sign up. Sign-ups are due by Thursday, Oct. 11. Participants will be invited to an introduction event where you will be matched with your partner.

Important info for today’s Homecoming football game

Our Homecoming football game against Whitworth University is today (Saturday), so please take note of the important information below. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.

We’ve got plenty of fun Homecoming activities planned for the game – including a free concert by Hit Machine at the tailgate area prior to the game – and we will be announcing our Homecoming King and Queen at halftime, so make your plans now to join in the fun!

Be sure to move your cars out of the Bauman parking lot and the tennis court parking if they are still located there. This space will be dedicated to football fan parking, activities and vendors on Saturday. No parking will be permitted in these lots.

Homecoming Tailgate Activities
Join us in the Bauman parking lot at 11:30 a.m. for a free concert by Hit Machine and plenty of other activities before the game kicks off.

Entrances to the Football Game
There will be two entrances into the game, and both are located in the Bauman parking lot directly behind the stadium.

Wheeler Sports Center Closed
The Wheeler Sports Center will be closed from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. This means the basketball gym, racquetball courts, and locker rooms will be closed.

Bauman Walkway
The sidewalk located between the football stadium and Bauman will be closed. Please walk around the building and do not move the barricade.

Circle Parking Lot
The circle parking lot near Wheeler will be closed for the day. This space is reserved for officials to park in. Officials will arrive as early as 10 a.m.

Sideline Passes
No one will be granted field access without a sideline pass. Sideline passes are issued to those who are required to work and/or have official business during the game.

Tickets
Students and staff can show their ID cards at the gate to get into the game free of charge. In addition, all George Fox alumni who check in at the alumni tent will receive a free T-shirt that allows them and their family into the game for free. Additional T-shirts can be purchased for $5.

Join us at 11:30 a.m. for the unveiling of the new Alumni Plaza, complete with a 10-foot tall bruin. Afterwards, head to the Bauman parking lot at noon for a free concert by Hit Machine, a free rock wall in our kid zone, affinity tailgates and plenty of other activities.

If you are an alumnus of the university, don’t forget to stop by the alumni tent to pick up your free T-shirt, which will serve as free admission for you and your family into the football game.

You’re invited to attend the Career and Internship Fair on Tuesday, Oct. 16, at Portland State University! This fair is for students NOT studying STEM subjects (science, tech, engineering and math).

Over 80 employers will be there to talk about jobs and internships for this spring and summer. Employers include Boeing, the Beaverton School District, the Oregon Health Authority, PGE and U.S. Bank. See the full list of employers here.

Ride down with other George Fox students and IDEA Center staff or go on your own. Vans will depart at 10:45 a.m. and return to campus by 2:30 p.m. Sign up through Handshake.

Register for Family Weekend!

Remind your families to register for Family Weekend, Oct. 19-21! Registration is open until Friday, Oct. 12. There will be events, games, prizes, and many additional opportunities to spend quality time with your family on campus!

Your family can’t make it? No problem. Family can be a spouse, friend, grandparents, or anyone else that YOU consider family. Gather a group of friends and register together! We would love to have you join the festivities even if your family can’t come.
