Survey: Ring by Spring

Thursday, October 22nd, 2020

We are seniors in an econometrics class this semester and are building a regression model to find out if we can predict the likelihood of being married for any given student at George Fox given socio-economic characteristics.

We ask about 15 demographic and dating questions, along with some opinion questions. It takes about one minute to do this survey.

Thank you for taking the time to do the survey!

Questions? Contact Richard Beck (rbeck17@georgefox.edu).

These surveys are student generated and are not to be associated with any official research conducted by faculty and staff at George Fox University. Do you woodwork? Tools available for use in the Maker Hub

Wednesday, October 21st, 2020

Do you like the type of projects you can accomplish with a full CNC router but would prefer an easier and more “user-friendly” option? You might be interested in the Shaper Origin Handheld CNC Router; the Shaper Origin provides an easy way to engrave wood/acrylic and make precise cuts with minimal tear out.

It excels at making small furniture, boxes/cabinets, shelves, engraved signs, etc. You can download designs from online or create your own. SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics) file using Adobe Illustrator, Inkscape, or SolidWorks. Check out this video for some inspiration.

We have the Shaper Origin Handheld CNC Router here in the Maker Hub along with many other creative machines and tools that are available to the George Fox community. Drop by for a chat, visit our Maker Hub wiki, or email Nick Sullivan (nsullivan@georgefox.edu) to ask questions and get connected.

Remember to self-bus your table

After you leave the dining area, the custodial team will wipe the space so it is available for other students, but they are not responsible for throwing trash away. Thank you!

Please email officeofstudentlife@georgefox.edu with any questions.

Enjoy acting? Audition for a role in ‘Life, Together’

Wednesday, October 21st, 2020

Life, Together is a series of vignettes that explore the issues and problems within ourselves that prevent us from living well in community. The themes and concepts of these five short plays are inspired by Dietrich Bonhoeffer’s theological writings on Christian community.

Theatre student Maddie Teel has written five short plays (around 10 minutes each) for her Richter Scholar Grant. Five of our student directors have volunteered to direct those five plays and help Maddie develop them into an evening of theatre. The show date will be Tuesday, Nov. 17, at 7:30 p.m.

Auditions:

  • This Monday, Oct 26, from 7 to 8:30 p.m.
    • Sign up for a three-minute audition time slot
  • Prepare a 90-second contemporary monologue
    • Your choice between comic or dramatic
  • Zoom link for the audition is here on the sign-up sheet

Information about Halloween Costumes

Tuesday, October 20th, 2020

In order to promote a fun and positive environment around the Halloween and harvest party season, the Office of Student Life has a few tips on avoiding cultural appropriation in your costume choice:

  • Avoid clothing that belongs to the traditions of a people group other than your own.
  • Avoid anything that involves blackface, Native/Indigenous, Asian, Pacific Islander, Hispanic, or Latinx representation, etc.
  • Ask yourself: Why do I want to wear this costume? Could my costume be misunderstood if I don’t understand its origin or cultural context?
  • Not sure what cultural appropriation is? Stop by the Intercultural Resource Center (IRC) and ask Bryce or Jenny about it.

If you have any questions, please contact the student life office or the Intercultural Resource Center.

Disability as Diversity: A Conversation for Students

Tuesday, October 20th, 2020

It’s Invisible Disability Week, and we’re excited to bring more visibility to disabilities on campus by launching a student conversation group!

We welcome students who face diverse disabilities to a conversation about navigating life with a disability. Led by a senior social work major who lives with a disability, this group will allow students to share their experiences, consider connections between disability and spirituality, hear from each other, and talk in a safe space with other students with disabilities.

This group will meet for an hour and a half on the Newberg campus on Monday, Oct. 26, or Wednesday, Oct. 28, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. (Lemmons 14).

After one meeting, the group members will decide whether or not to continue meeting. Each group is limited to six participants, but we will work to provide groups for all who are interested. SPIL credit is available.

To RSVP, sign up here. Questions? Contact Alyssa Overcash (aovercash16@georgefox.edu) or Andrea Byerley (abyerley@georgefox.edu). Be sure to follow us on instagram (gfu.accessibility).

Instructions for voting

Tuesday, October 20th, 2020

It’s time to vote! If you are a resident of Oregon, here are the steps to take:

If you are registered you will receive a ballot two or three weeks before the election via mail. You will receive a mail-in ballot automatically because that is Oregon law.

To change your voting address, go to this link and follow the instructions. Mail your ballot back by Wednesday, Oct. 28. If you miss that date, you will need to drop it in a ballot box.

If you live out of state:

The government will allow you to vote via absentee voting (mail-in) in the state you are attending school. Visit this page for information on how to vote if you live out of state. To change your address, check out this page.

Tips for preventing a rejected ballot:

  • Vote early. That means mail in your ballot before Oct. 28.
  • Make sure your signature is the same as the signature on your driver’s license.
  • Do not vote twice.
  • Remember to mail in your ballot; do not keep it as a souvenir.

Survey: Spiritual Growth While Attending Fox

Monday, October 19th, 2020

Have you experienced positive spiritual growth as a student at Fox? I would love to conduct a quick virtual interview with you regarding your experience!

I am looking for students of all denominations. If you are Quaker, non-denominational, Eastern Orthodox, Catholic, Lutheran, Presbyterian, or any other denomination, and are interested in expressing how Fox has helped you cultivate spiritual growth, please fill out this form.

The information collected will be intended for use in a feature for George Fox’s blog, “Bruin Blog,” overseen by the university’s marketing communications office. After filling out the form, you will be contacted to set up a time for a virtual interview.

By filling out this form, you are not guaranteed an interview, as there is a limited amount of spaces available. The goal is to depict how Fox encourages the growth of all denominations; therefore, you will not be turned away due to your affiliation with a specific denomination.

Thank you!

Please contact Anna Gallagher (agallagher17@georgefox.edu) with any questions.
