The university will celebrate its 10th annual Serve Day on Wednesday, Sept. 10. More than 1,500 students and employees will fan out into local communities to assist a record 72 sites with everything from painting, weeding and cleaning projects to visiting the elderly.

All students and employees will meet on the Newberg campus quad at 8:20 a.m. and depart for work sites in Washington, Yamhill, Clackamas, and Multnomah counties at 9 a.m. The groups will return to campus by 4 p.m., at which time the day will conclude with a volunteer fair and campus-wide celebration that will feature a country fair theme. All George Fox participants also are invited for a complimentary dinner served by the Bon Appetit.

Among the carnival activities planned are a mechanical bull ride, a three-legged race, face painting, a bean-bag toss, a basketball throw, balloon animals, and more. The event will include about 20 nonprofit volunteer booths, 20 church booths and 20 student activity booths.

The schedule for the day is as follows:

Spiritual Formation and Chapel Credits

Monday, September 1st, 2008

To make sure you understand the Spiritual Formation requirements please take a few minutes to read this message.

Information about the Spiritual Formation program can be found on the Spiritual Life website or the Student Handbook.

Full or partial exemptions from the spiritual formation program may be granted to students who work during the chapel hour on Monday or Wednesday. However, this year there are several different options in the evening so please check out the schedule in your Bruindata account.

If you believe you qualify for a full or partial exemption please fill out the Spiritual Formation Exemption form and submit it to Jere Witherspoon in the Student Life Office.

If you forget to scan your ID card or forget your ID card when attending chapel, you can still receive credit by e-mailing Jere Witherspoon with the following information:

~ Name
~ ID number
~ Date of chapel
~ Brief description of the content of the chapel

Please note: you must e-mail me no later than 5 pm on the day of the chapel event in question.

Students must scan ONCE before chapel to receive chapel credit. Do not scan prior to 10:15 am or you will not receive credit. Please scan no later than 10:45 am.

The chapel credits are uploaded into the system manually by 5 pm on the day of the chapel.

Chapel events where students use a sign in sheet may not be recorded for several days. Contact Jere Witherspoon in Student Life if you have any questions about chapels where the sign in sheet is used.

Please contact me if you meet this criteria but still have a chapel requirement recorded in Bruindata.

It is better to ask questions now than wait till the end of the semester. Please contact Jere Witherspoon for more information. Or call me at 503-554-2316.

Students are ‘automatically’ exempt from the spiritual formation program if you:

~ have senior status of 93 credits or more recorded in your transcript in Bruindata
~ are 22 years of age or older by September 1, 2008

If you are participating in student teaching or a internship sponsored by an academic department, the academic assistant should e-mail me your name and student ID number. You may be eligible to receive either a full or partial exemption.
