The women’s basketball team plays Friday, March 13, in the NCAA Division III National Championship Tournament Sectional at Thomas More College in Crestview Hlls, Ky., near Cincinnati. The No. 2-ranked (WBCA) and 28-0 Bruins will meet Oglethorpe University (27-3) at 5 p.m. Eastern time (2 p.m. Pacific).

The winner will play Saturday, March 14, at 7 p.m. Eastern time (4 p.m. Pacific) against the winner of the Thomas More (28-2) vs. Hope College (27-1) game Friday, with that winner advancing to the Final Four in Holland, Mich., March 20-21.

KFOX radio will provide live internet audio of all Bruin games in the sectional. Host Thomas More will provide LiveStats and a live video feed of all games on the Internet through a local cable company. Links are provided for all multimedia coverage on the George Fox athletics Web site home page and women’s basketball home page in the schedule section.

Jazz Band performs in Bauman Auditorium Friday

The Department of Performing Arts will present the university’s Jazz Band in concert at 7:30 p.m. Friday, March 13, in Bauman Auditorium. Admission is free.

Come to Klages Dining Hall as Bruins play Oglethorpe Friday

Everyone is welcome to join in on a “Sweet 16” party as the George Fox women take on Oglethorpe in the Sweet 16 round of the NCAA Division III basketball playoffs at 2 p.m. this Friday, March 13, in the Klages Dining Hall.

We will listen to live audio and watch live stats. We also are working on a live video feed as well, hopefully synchronized with Justin Sweeney’s KFOX broadcast. The game begins promptly at 2 p.m.; come early if you can. There will be free popcorn, chips and salsa!

FoxSecret night of prayer, reflection set for March 16

The culmination of FoxSecret will be a prayer/reflection night from 8 to 9 p.m. Monday, March 16, in the Cap and Gown Room. All of the postcards collected will be put on display for the George Fox community to reflect on and pray over. Please join us at any point during this time.

FoxSecret is a mimic of the nationwide PostSecret, in which people write anonymous secrets on postcards and send them in. Through it we we hope to recognize, celebrate, and prayerfully lift up the people in our community.

‘Triumph of Love’ plays Thursday through Sunday in Wood-Mar

The theatre department will present its spring production, The Triumph of Love, this Thursday through Sunday, March 12-15, in Wood-Mar Auditorium. Performances take place at 7:30 p.m. each night through Saturday and at 2 p.m. on Sunday.

The play, directed by Rhett Luedtke (Performing Arts), is an 18th-century romantic comedy filled with all the confusions and complexities of love. Employees receive one complimentary ticket, available for pick-up at the University Store. Students are welcome to see the show free of charge on Thursday, March 12, and may pick up those tickets at the University Store.

The cost for additional tickets is $10 for general admission, $8 for seniors and alumni, and $6 for students and children under 12. To purchase tickets or find out more, visit the university’s theatre site.

2009 Housing Selection begins Mar. 16 on BruinData

Fall 2009 housing selection will be online in BruinData beginning Monday, March 16. Before then, you should figure out two things:
 
1)  Who you want to live with. Group sizes can range from 2-6 people.

Performing Arts presents several events next week

Mark your calendars for next week’s events presented by the Department of Performing Arts …

The annual Honors Recital will be held at 7:30 p.m. Monday, March 16, in Bauman Auditorium. This recital features select students chosen from the top performers in our Honors Recital competition, including Matt Hill (trumpet), Bethany Taft and Becca Couch (piano duet), Joseph Forster (piano), Kamila Kuhn (flute), Nick Luchterhand (alto saxophone), Cameron DeWhitt (piano), James Pick (piano), Jennie Fryer (mezzo-soprano), Emily Yarnold (soprano), Becca Couch (mezzo-soprano), Qingquan “Tara” Li (piano), Julianne Kilmer (soprano), and Ben Tissell (baritone). Please join us for an evening of fabulous music and support the hard work of our students.

On Wednesday, March 18, Julianne Kilmer (soprano) will present her senior recital at 7:30 p.m. in Bauman Auditorium.

The Winter Band Concert will be held at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 19, in Bauman Auditorium.

Finally, on Friday, March 20, a Vocal Masterclass will be held in Ross 208 at 12:40 p.m.

On Thursday, March 12, Emily Nicole Jones (mezzo-soprano) and Emily Jackson (soprano) will present their senior recital at 7:30 p.m.

On Friday, March 13, the George Fox University Jazz Band will perform at 7:30 p.m.

On Saturday, March 14, Teddi Teague (mezzo-soprano) will present her senior recital at 7:30 p.m.

Student shares Tuesday on her experiences in Middle East

Join student Kohleun Adamson as she shares poetry and creative nonfiction from her time spent in the Middle East exploring life writing and its relation to peace building. Kohleun will share during an “Intellectual Feast” at 4 p.m. Tuesday, March 10, in the Hoover Faculty Lounge.

In Jordan and the West Bank, Kohleun met with Arab women of various national heritages, collecting stories from their lives, in their own voices. Come hear some of these stories retold, dialogue about this unique avenue for peace building, and enjoy some food.

Student Art Exhibit opens with reception Tuesday, March 10

Community garden meeting set for March 18

Spring is upon us, and plans for this year’s George Fox community garden are blooming. A meeting to discuss this year’s garden projects is scheduled at 9 p.m. Wednesday, March 18, in the second-floor lounge of the Hoover Academic Building. Plans this year are to add a new watering system, a new variation of crops, and gardening education. Find out how to get involved and learn more about community garden membership and our mission and vision.

Students invited to apply for cross-cultural grants

With funding from the Clella Iles Jaffe Cross Cultural Endowment Fund, undergraduate and graduate students are invited to apply for grants for projects and activities that will promote cross-cultural understanding and racial or ethnic reconciliation in a global or significantly diverse context.

Priority will be given to projects dealing with:

  • Racial reconciliation
  • Peacemaking
  • Organizational communication
  • Cinema/media/broadcast
  • The communication arts in general
  • Cross cultural experiences that will enhance the student’s professional career

Grants may not be used for research projects and trips, Juniors Abroad, semesters off campus, and service programs.
Students may apply by submitting a letter of application and description of the project or experience, along with a faculty letter of support, to: Lon Fendall, director of the Center for Global Studies and the Center for Peace and Justice (lfendall@georgefox.edu). Inquiries are welcome about the suitability of project ideas.

Applications are due on March 31. A faculty committee will meet shortly after that and decide which proposals to fund.

HMS “Relationships Night” Mar. 10 & 17

The HMS Resident Life staff is hosting two “Relationships nights.” 

Tuesday, March 10 from 8:30-9:45 p.m. will be a time for each gender to talk about their own relationship struggles separate from each other.  Then Tuesday, March 17 from 8:30-9:45 p.m. there will be group time with guest speakers from the George Fox commonity and a discussion held to talk about common struggles and concerns.  

The purpose of these nights is to focus on Christ while exploring Godly relationships in a fallen world.  Discussions will be at HMS.  Hope to see you there!
