Art shows on exhibit in library

Tuesday, March 17th, 2009

The library is exhibiting two new art shows and another that continues through the first week of April.

Karen Bowdoin’s 3-D class has two different art forms on display, paper sculptures and Cornell Boxes, as well as a new class in book arts. With the Cornell Box assignment, students develop a strong concept or idea and build a box from a pre-made kit that houses items (found or created) that communicate their theme or idea.

New to the library show this year are the paper sculptures. Students were asked to create an aesthetically pleasing, three-dimensional form, two to three feet high, from the two-dimensional material of white paper. These incredible sculptures include a masque, birds, and a hand holding a cup.

Book arts is a new class offered this semester. In it, students explore the structure and content of the book in terms of how it relates to the world of art. Lori McLaughlin’s Design 2 class has created various whimsical and realistic cardboard sculptures that are cavorting around the second-floor railing.

On continuing display is selected artwork from Bob Bredemeier’s illustration class, now hanging in the classy new display system that Bob designed and made.
