University hosts ‘To Write Love on Her Arms’ founder Sept. 23

Jamie Tworkowski, founder of “To Write Love on Her Arms,” will be joining us in chapel on Wednesday, Sept. 23, from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. There will also be a talk-back session in the Bruin Den Annex from noon to 1 p.m. Also, Jamie will present a 7 p.m. session that night in Bauman Auditorium (spiritual formation credit is offered).

To Write Love on Her Arms is a nonprofit movement dedicated to presenting hope and finding help for people struggling with depression, addiction, self-injury and suicide.

Spots still available for Bible-reading sessions in quad

The group Timothy’s Charge has arranged the reading sessions in the quad from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. each day through Friday. President Robin Baker kicked off the event Monday. Meal plan FAQs answered

Now that everyone has been enjoying their meals in our newly remodeled cafe, we wanted to share a few thoughts over the next several days that will answer a few questions we’ve been asked recently:

How do I get a meal if I’m not feeling well?

No problem.  If you’re not feeling well and you don’t feel up to coming over for a meal, please give us a call at ext. 2500 and let us know.  Then give your ID card to either your RA or your roommate and have them come over and let our card swiper person know who they are getting a meal for.  Our cashier will swipe the ID card and then will give that person a pre-assembled box breakfast, lunch, or dinner filled with lots of easy comfort type foods to bring back to you.

I have a scheduling conflict on Tuesdays and don’t have time to come over for lunch before the Bon closes.  How can I get lunch? 

Great question.  If you have a class conflict or have a job and can’t make it over for a meal, plan ahead and you can order a great sack lunch or dinner.  We’ll have it ready for you when you need it.  Please note:  24 hours notice is required.

Visit the Bon Appetit Offices between 7 a.m. and 10 a.m. Monday-Friday and ask for Adelita or Mary.  They will give you a form to fill out, letting us know which days you need the sack lunch or dinner.  You’ll also get to choose from our listing of menu items so that you can customize it just the way you want it.

Please note: This program is available only if you have a conflict and can’t make it over on some kind of re-occuring basis.  This program is not available if you just don’t feel like coming over for a meal or if you want to take off early some afternoon and head to the coast.

Things to remember about meal plans:

1.  The meal plan runs from Monday breakfast through Sunday night dinner.
2.  Once you’ve swiped your ID card equaling the number of meals you’ve paid for (i.e., 14 meal plan = 14 meals per week) you’re on your own until the following Monday.  Be sure to budget your meals wisely so that you don’t run out of meals too soon.
3.  All the meal plans are “All You Care To Eat” while in Klages.  We do not allow any “take-out” food other than a piece of fruit, bagel, ice cream cone, or something else that you’re eating as you exit.
4.  Meals are not transferable to someone else. A friend may not borrow your ID card to have a meal for any reason.  If the picture on the card doesn’t match the peson trying to use it, you’ll both get a chance to visit the Dean of Students.
5.  If you have a visiting friend or family member, we cannot swipe your card a couple extra times to pay for their meals.  We do accept cash and we welcome all visitors to join us for meals while visiting the university.

I forgot my ID card in my room.  Can I still come in to eat?

It’s your choice…either head back to your room and find that pesky card or come up with the cash to pay.  All students are required to have their ID card with them so that we can swipe it and deduct a meal.  It’s no different than needing your card to get into your dorm, swiping for chapel, or checking out books from the library.

If you lose your ID card or leave it home while on break, please come to our offices right away and let us know.  We’ll change the status of your card on our system and issue you a temporary card to prevent someone from using yours if they find it.  Replacement cards can be purchased from the IT Department.  When you find your card or if you have to purchase a new one, you’ll need to bring it to the Bon Appetit Offices in order to activate it to our meal plan system.

Want to know how to save some money?

Last year it cost over $4,000 to replace all the cups, bowls, plates and silverware that students removed from the dining room.  Ultimately those costs are passed on to students as they pay for their meal plans. 

Please remember that all dishware needs to stay here so that you have something to eat and drink from tomorrow!

Spiritual life sponsors relationship retreat in Lincoln City Oct. 2-3

A weekend relationship retreat sponsored by the Office of Spiritual Life, “Growing a Healthy Relationship,” is open to any married, engaged or seriously dating couple (non-GFU students may come if accompanied by a current student). It is scheduled Friday and Saturday, Oct. 2-3, in Lincoln City.

The cost is $15 per person (includes lodging and three meals). Registration forms are available in the Office of Spiritual Life. The sign-up deadline is Friday, Sept. 18 by 5 p.m. (form and money are to be turned in to the spiritual life office; if no one is up front, you can just leave the form on the front desk).

Speakers debate arguments for and against Christian faith

The Philosophy Club is welcoming three speakers who will address the usefulness of arguments for and against Christian faith. James White, Matt Slick and Dan Barker will take part in a panel discussion, “The Value of Apologetics,” beginning at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 25, in Hoover 105.

The following day, Saturday, Sept. 26, they will debate Christian belief at Newberg Christian Church at an all-day event (9:30 a.m.-10 p.m.). The cost to attend Saturday’s event is $10 for students. Newberg Christian Church is located at 2315 Villa Road.

Help needed to publicize ‘New Abolitionists’ event

Do you attend church outside of Newberg? If so, we need your help. The Office of Spiritual Life and Northwest Yearly Meeting are sponsoring an upcoming conference, The New Abolitionists, on Oct. 24. This will be a day conference focusing on how to end sex trafficking in Portland (you will be hearing more information soon about the conference).

We need help getting the word out to our surrounding communities. If you attend church outside of Newberg and are willing to put up a poster at your church, please stop by our office to pick one up. The Office of Spiritual Life is located on the corner of Sheridan and Meridian streets. Thank you in advance!

Daystar University group Afrizo selling CDs on campus

Daystar University students have three different CDs available for sale in the Office of Spiritual Life. Support the group Afrizo by purchasing a CD for $15. Checks can be made out out to “Afrizo.”

Daystar, located in Nairobi, Kenya, is operated through the Christian College Consortium and has partnered with George Fox to provide study-abroad opportunities for students.
