Students, please remember to either register your vehicle or register as NOCAR by end of day on Friday, Jan. 21, to avoid being issued and charged for a non-refundable parking permit due to not registering.

If you have changed your housing from one side of the campus to another, or moved on/off campus over Christmas break, please scrape off your parking permit and bring it to the security office so that the proper permit can be issued. Single-edge razor blades are available in the security office if you need help in scraping off your permit.

If you have changed vehicles since last semester, please scrape off the permit from your previous vehicle and bring it to the security office so we can change the registration and issue a new permit. Office hours are from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday. Please call ext. 2090 if you have questions. Thanks!

The engineering department will host a research seminar presented by Dr. Karl Olsen, clinical assistant professor of engineering at Washington State University, from 4 to 5 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 20, in EHS 102. All are welcome.

Olsen’s presentation is entitled “Ultrasonic Detection of Simulated Corrosion in 1-Inch Diameter Steel Tieback Rods.” The research presented investigates the use of pulse-echo ultrasonic techniques to identify simulated corrosion in steel rods. The primary objective was to quantify loss of cross section due to corrosion of steel tieback rods in earth retention systems.

In an effort to inform undergraduate students about what is happening in and around campus, BruinLife, a monthly, e-newsletter, has been created.

Our hope is that it will be a useful tool in communicating important (and, hopefully, interesting) information about the changes happening at George Fox University. We also hope to provide answers to various questions that you might have regarding student life or other aspects of your Fox experience. The deadline for making any changes to your meal plan is Friday, January 21, 2011 at 5 p.m. This is the last day to add or drop classes as well.

This month’s Multicultural Student Programs-sponsored Coffee & Culture event will highlight international students and other student voices. Come join us for coffee, treats and hearing students’ perspectives.

We’ll meet at 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 20, in the International Center/Cultural House, located across from the Pennington parking lot.

The university community is invited to an MLK chapel with Pastor Emmett Wheatfall, a poet, author and member of the external diversity committee. He will be doing a rendition of the “I Have a Dream” speech. In addition, come worship with us and hear student voices on what Martin Luther King Jr. stood for and how it plays out in their own lives.

Why is it that close to half of graduating seniors pick up their diplomas and ditch their faith?  For those graduates who remain connected to Jesus, what is it that makes the difference?  And how can we be made aware of the ways we may be subtly sabotaging our students’ faith, despite our best intentions? Kaleo 2011 will be held on February 26th, from 9 a.m.- 4:15 p.m.

Kaleo 2011 will take a deep look at ongoing research conducted by the Fuller Youth Institute on students just like our’s.  Kara Powell and Jon Furman will provide practical ways to keep students of all ages and grades engaged in ministry, and more importantly their faith, so that they build faith that sticks.

Peter Greer, president of the nonprofit relief agency HOPE International, will present a free public lecture from 7:30 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 20, in Hoover 105.

HOPE International focuses on alleviating physical and spiritual poverty in countries such as Haiti, Afghanistan and DR Congo. In addition to serving as president, Greer is the founder of the HOPE Global Investment Fund, a microfinance investment fund that targets underserved regions of the world.

Greer is the coauthor, with Phil Smith, of The Poor Will Be Glad. The book, one of the first of its kind, delineates a Christian approach to microfinance as a means of fighting global poverty.

Nasser Abufarha, a Palestinian-American scholar and social entrepreneur, will present a free lecture, “Insisting on Life: Martyrdom and Fair Trade in Palestine,” on campus Wednesday, Jan. 19. A guest of the university’s Center for Peace and Justice, Abufarha will speak from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in Hoover 105.

Abufarha is the founder of the Palestine Fair Trade Association and Canaan Fair Trade, which is bringing Palestinian olive oil and other traditional foods to mainstream American and European markets, while also improving economic conditions for more than 1,700 farmers in the West Bank.

He is also the author of The Making of a Human Bomb: An Ethnography of Palestinian Resistance, a book that explains how geographic separation of Palestinians and mimetic actions to Israeli state repression will continue to be a source of violence until Palestinians can experience actual rootedness in their land and start to explore alternative exchanges between themselves and Israelis.

Do tests drive you crazy? You read the book, did the assignments, studied the night before, and still didn’t do as well as you wanted on your test; what else can you do?

If this sounds familiar, join us for an Academic Resource Center workshop, “How to Get A’s on All Your Tests (or at Least Become a Better Test-Taker),” this Friday, Jan. 21, at 10:40 a.m. in Lemmons 8. Rick Muthiah, dean of learning support services, will cover several strategies for improving performance on tests.

Students will be asked to sign in so their attendance can be verified for any professors who are giving credit for participation. Videos and materials from selected ARC workshops are available on the ARC website (arc.georgefox.edu).

George Fox’s annual Missions Fair is coming up on Monday, January 24th. There will be many missions organizations here to give you information on both short-term and long-term mission trips. There will be organizations based around medical work, teaching, engineering, and aviation to name a few. Please stop by the Cap & Gown room (next to the Bon) from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm to check out all the possible missions opportunities available to you!

Due to the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday on Monday, Jan. 17, both the Villa Cafe and Bruin Den will be closed that day. They will resume their normal hours on Tuesday.

The hours of service in Klages for students on meal plans will also change slightly this weekend. Please note the following changes:

Dinner: 4:30-6:30 p.m.
