Come get help at the George Fox Business lab! This semester at George Fox University, the business department has added a valuable new resource for all business students. The Business Lab is lead by two tutors at every session twice a week to meet the needs of struggling students with business majors. Students are invited to come and receive aid with homework, exam study, and group projects. Recommended to students in the following courses: ACCT 271, ACCT 272, BUSN 240, FINC 260, ECON 201, ECON 202

MLA basics workshop is Tuesday

What are the most important elements of MLA style that you need to know to prepare effective papers? The Academic Resource Center is hosting a session, “MLA Basics,” that will answer this question. Join us at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 22, in Lemmons 8.

Gary Tandy, professor of English, will cover MLA elements as well as guide you to other resources that can assist you in mastering this academic style of writing.

GFU Scholarship Manager Now Open

Scholarship Manager for the 2011-12 GFU scholarships is now open for all returning Newberg undergraduate students.  To apply, please go to your mygfu web page and open the link in “Student Resources” titled:  2011 Newberg Undergrad Scholarships.  From there you will sign in to set up your account. You will be able to work on your application and return to it at a later date if it is not yet complete but please read the instructions on the application carefully.

The deadline is March 15th.

Renewal: Students Caring for Creation representative on campus

Gretchen Peck, coordinator for Renewal: Students Caring for Creation and a recruiter for the Creation Care Study Program, a George Fox off-campus study program in the South Pacific and Belize, will be on campus Thursday and Friday, Feb. 17-18, to share Renewal’s vision to inspire, connect and equip students to advocate for creation care and environmental sustainability across the globe.

Gretchen will be manning a table in the Bruin Den both days and will also speak in the following classes:

All are invited to two concerts scheduled in Bauman Auditorium next week. On Tuesday, Feb. 22, a Winter Jazz Concert will feature the songs Splanky, by Neal Hefti; Freckle Face, by Sammy Nestico; Boplicity, by Miles Davis; and Critical Mass, by Jeff Jarvis, among others.

Two days later, on Feb. 24, a Winter Band Concert will include the selections Winter Dances, by Fergal Carrol; Elegy, by John Barnes Chance; Suite Dreams, by Steven Bryant; and George Washington Bicentennial March, by John Philip Sousa.

Both concerts are free, and doors open at 7 p.m. both nights.

Dr. Thornburg speaks at first Dalton lecture event Feb. 22

Dr. Kent Thornburg, a George Fox alumnus (’67), will present a lecture, entitled “New Science Wrestles An Old Problem: The Roots of Human Disease,” at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 22, in Wood-Mar Auditorium.

Dr. Thornburg is the director of Oregon Health & Science University’s Heart Research Center and has served on the George Fox Board of Trustees since 1983. His presentation will be followed by a reception and poster presentation featuring biology and chemistry research students. All are welcome to attend.

This inaugural Dalton Lecture Series event is sponsored by the Department of Biology and Chemistry and features eminent scientists who are Christian.

• Expand your understanding of people with different ways of seeing the world.

• Sharpen your communication skills.

• Grow in your skills in being more culturally sensitive.

• Be more prepared to live and work in our global society.

• By exposing yourself to people from other cultural perspectives, you better understand your own culture.

• You have something to share and that others need.  Remember, expressing your perspective is as important as learning other’s perspectives.

• Consider how God might use you or speak to you through a roommate from a different cultural perspective.

IJM chapter meets again Wednesday night

The International Justice Mission chapter at George Fox deals in large part with the issue of sex-trafficking on both a global and local scale, and what steps we can do to combat it. Two major focuses of the chapter are prayer and finding ways we can get involved in the community. Please come and see how you can get involved as well.
