Student leaders from Quaere Verum and the International Justice Mission clubs, as well as the Center for Peace and Justice, have made a proposal to ASC for subsidized student registration for the upcoming Justice Conference in Portland on Saturday, Feb. 25, 2012.

The conference will take place at the Convention Center in Portland and will feature many world-renowned speakers on theology and social justice. Among those are: Francis Chan, Walter Bruggeman, Miroslav Volf, John Perkins, Shane Claiborne, Rachel Lloyd, Richard Twiss and Lynne Hybels. More than 500 organizations, nonprofits and NGOs will be represented as exhibitors, including George Fox Evangelical Seminary and the university’s Center for Peace and Justice.

Student registration is normally $79, but with ASC’s support students will pay only $30 (after a reimbursement).

Tickets are now available for the university’s fall theatre production of Steel Magnolias by Robert Harling.

The play opens Thursday, Oct. 27, and runs Thursday through Saturday, Oct. 27-29, and again Thursday through Sunday, Nov. 3-6, in Wood-Mar Auditorium. All shows begin at 7:30 p.m. with the exception of the Sunday, Nov. 6, performance, scheduled as a 2 p.m. matinee.

Career Services is hosting a Seminary Fair on Tuesday, Oct. 25, in the Hoover Atrium from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. A number of seminary representatives will be present to connect with prospective students who desire to be equipped for ministry through graduate education.

Those with intermediate-advanced level dance experience are invited to audition to be a member of the George Fox Dance Company.

George Fox will host a presentation of the Holocaust drama We Are Witnesses at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 24, in the Cap and Gown Room. Admission is free and the public is invited.

Presented by the STAGES Performing Arts Youth Academy, We Are Witnesses is the true account of five Jewish adolescents whose lives are depicted during Hitler’s regime. The story is based on five diaries of Jewish teenagers who died during the Holocaust and is the true account of their lives.

The youth recount how the war affected them and how they saw the world. The play presents their innocence and hope for the future by bringing their diaries alive.

STAGES is based in Hillsboro and focuses on education, offering a variety of theatre classes to children in grades K-12. Classes focus on basic theatre education and include some specialty classes such as musical theatre.

Participants in the Learning New Languages program, which started on Oct. 5, are going to meet again this Wednesday (Oct. 19) from 7 to 9 p.m. at the International House. Please join us if you are interested in learning some basic Chinese and making some Chinese friends.

Don’t worry if you missed the first class section because we are going to review what we learned last time while also learning something new.

The Academic Resource Center is busier this year than ever before, with more than 410 visits to the ARC so far this year (compared with 290 at this point last year). Because of the demand, it’s critical that students schedule appointments in advance.

Students often need to schedule two to three days ahead to ensure an appointment; one can also schedule a week – or even a month – ahead. Appointments for writing, learning strategies, academic coaching, or general tutoring can be scheduled by e-mailing the_arc@georgefox.edu, calling ext. 2314, or stopping by the ARC during hours of operation (1-10 p.m., Mon-Thur; noon-4 p.m., Fri). A schedule of labs for subject tutoring is available online.

Research papers can seem overwhelming, but following a step-by-step, organized approach can make your life much less stressful. Gary Tandy, professor of English, and Jane Scott, public services librarian, will walk through those steps and guide you to campus and Internet resources to help make you a research pro.

The Academic Resource Center-sponsored session will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 18, starting at 6:30 p.m. in EHS 125.

The university community is invited to hear Diane Randall, executive secretary of the Friends Committee on National Legislation – the largest team of registered peace lobbyists in Washington, D.C. – present a free lecture from 7 to 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 21, in EHS 102.

Randall will speak on “The Privilege and Responsibility of Faithful Citizenship.” Her visit is being sponsored by George Fox’s Center for Peace and Justice.

Randall’s background includes many years as an executive director of statewide advocacy organizations, a passion for rebuilding the democratic system in our country, a record of achievements in lobbying and citizen engagement, and a spiritual grounding in the Religious Society of Friends.

In addition to her evening presentation, Randall will lecture in an 11:40 a.m. political science class in Hoover 103 and again at 1:40 p.m. in a philosophy class in Stevens 209. She also will introduce the FCNL internship program to interested students during lunch beginning at 12:35 p.m. in the Klages Dining Hall.
