Research papers can seem overwhelming, but following a step-by-step, organized approach can make the process of writing one much less stressful. Join us as we walk through these steps and guide you to campus and Internet resources to help make you a research pro.

This Academic Resource Center-sponsored workshop, “Steps to Writing a Successful Research Paper,” is scheduled from 10:40 to 11:30 a.m. this Friday, Feb. 17, in EHS 125. Gary Tandy (English) and Jane Scott (Public Services Librarian) will present.

All are invited to Harvard professor’s presentation Monday

The university’s Department of Biology and Chemistry invites you to join us for our second annual Dalton Lecture Series event, “God of Antimatter,” featuring Dr. Gerald Gabrielse, Harvard’s Leverett Professor of Physics, at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 20.

Dr. Gabrielse has won Harvard’s Levenson Prize for exceptional teaching and the Ledlie Prize for exceptional research. He is currently the chair of the Division of Atomic, Molecular and Optical Physics of the American Physical Society.

Dr. Gabrielse will address questions such as “What role does faith have in a scientist’s life?” and “Is there more to our world than science can say?”

Join in festivities of final regular-season home basketball games Friday

The university community is invited to a full evening of activities and celebrations when the men’s and women’s basketball teams host their final regular-season home games against county rival Linfield this Friday, Feb. 17, in Miller Gymnasium.

Among the various events planned around the games will be a celebration of National Girls and Women in Sports Day; an introduction of all senior women student-athletes, student athletic trainers and cheerleaders; “Pink Zone” activities for breast cancer awareness and research; the recognition of George Fox’s 2010-11 Northwest Conference team championships; and pregame ceremonies to acknowledge the careers of the basketball teams’ graduating seniors.

The women’s game tips off at 6 p.m., followed by the men’s game at 8 p.m. The women are currently 23-0 overall, ranked No. 3 in the nation, and have clinched a share of their sixth straight Northwest Conference crown and home-court advantage for all NWC Tournament games. The George Fox men are 11-12 overall but fourth in the conference at 8-6 and fighting for one of the four playoff spots in the NWC Tournament.

Spring Theological Conference begins today

Don’t forget this week’s Spring Theological Conference featuring Evvy Campbell. Campbell, a Wheaton college professor and former director with an international relief organization, will speak on campus and engage the university community in a conversation on the “holistic mission of God” Monday and Wednesday.

Campbell, an associate professor of intercultural studies emerita at Wheaton, will speak in chapel on Monday and Wednesday. Both services are scheduled from 10:40 to 11:30 a.m. in Bauman Auditorium. In addition, she will engage with students and other attendees in a conversation from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 13, in the Cap and Gown Room. The topic of discussion will be “Engaging the Missional God: An Interactive Conversation.”

Monday evening’s session will allow students and faculty to engage in conversations about how they can participate in God’s work in the midst of those distinct callings. Each speaker will sit with students and share a part of his or her story in small groups, with conversation and discussion following. Students will rotate to hear three of the six speakers. The evening will also include worship, refreshments and prayer.

Speakers include: Brian Doak (Religious Studies), Evvy Campbell (guest speaker), Kris Kays (Psychology), Davida Brown (Chemistry), Nate Peach (Economics) and Marie Palm (Nursing).

Student Surveys – Process for Distribution

Need to send out a student survey? The following guidelines have been established for the distribution of student surveys. Faculty members are encouraged to help facilitate this process.

Please follow these guidelines when submitting student surveys for mass distribution. Send your surveys to Jere Witherspoon in the student life office. Your approved survey request should include all of the following:

  • Your name and e-mail address (may include the list of names from those in your group)
  • Course name and professor
  • Approval for distribution granted by: _______________________ (list department)
  • Short, catchy blurb about the survey no more than 35 words in length
  • A tested, workable link to the survey

An e-mail with all submitted surveys will be sent to all students once a week (on Wednesdays). An identical e-nnouncement will be submitted at the same time to student e-nnouncements. The following disclaimer will be attached to the e-mail and the e-nnouncement:

Due to unauthorized use, Prayer Chapel will now be locked 24/7

Due to unauthorized people using the Prayer Chapel as a “hangout,” it has been decided to keep the Prayer Chapel locked at all times. It had previously been unlocked 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily. Now it will be locked 24/7, but all students, faculty and staff will have 24/7 card access to it. You may use your GFU ID card to access it at any time.

Second annual Diversity Forum scheduled Feb. 15

What have you wanted to ask someone of another race or a different culture but are too afraid? What is a label that has been unfairly given to you? What is your first thought when the word “race” is said?

These questions and more will be discussed at the second annual student-led Diversity Forum on Wednesday, Feb. 15, from 8 to 10 p.m. in the Cap and Gown Room. ASC will be hosting a time where students can come and talk about race, diversity, culture and other important identity questions in a safe and student-only discussion.
