The submission deadline for the International Photo Contest is this Friday, March 16. Please look through your album and see if there are any photos taken outside of the United States you want to share with the Fox community.

Winners will receive a cash prize of $50, $25, and $15 (for first-, second-, and third-place winners). The “Best of Show” will receive $75.

Three categories of the photos you can submit:

• People who are locals of where the photo was taken, or you and your friends abroad
• Landscape and architecture
• Culture: subjects outside the first two categories that reflect cultural creative/artistic qualities

Each contestant can submit up to five photos, with a maximum of three photos in each category. You can submit photos to Lishan Zeng (lzeng09@georgefox.edu) if you are a student or Alice Gozal (agozal10@georgefox.edu) if you are an employee. All entries must be submitted with the following information:

• Your name and identity as student or GFU employee
• Category in which you wish to have the photo judged
• Title of photo
• Location the photo was taken (city, country, etc.)
• Description of the photo (story behind it)

The International Club is hosting a fundraiser during lunch and dinner this Friday, March 16, in the Bruin Den. Please come and support us by purchasing our bubble tea.

What is bubble tea? It is a cold, frothy drink made with iced tea, sweetened milk, and usually with sweet black balls or “pearls” made from tapioca. It is also known as “boba tea” and “pearl tea.”

Do you like to walk, run or volunteer? The university’s Social Work Club is seeking volunteers for a Child Abuse Awareness Walk and Run on Saturday, April 28, at Cook Park in Tigard.

Volunteers will help with the following positions: hand out food and water, cheer people on, keep people on the correct course, set up, tear down and clean up, aid people in the resource booth, hand out the blue ribbons, and talk about the blue ribbon campaign. Volunteers will receive a free T-shirt for their participation in this event.

This event is being sponsored by the Social Work Club and supported by the Department of Human Services, Healthy Start, the Domestic Violence Resource Center, Community Action, and a number of other agencies. These agencies would greatly appreciate your support.

This campaign will showcase topics most relevant to people who are between the ages of 18 and 24 (with a “halo group” of ages 25-34), and will include a strong social media component.

To participate in the focus group, you must be 18 to 24 years of age and a lover of photography and/or video. We will be showing some videos to get your opinion and ask your input regarding our ideas for this campaign. Please join us on the “ground floor” as we create an Intel campaign.

If they win, they will play the winner of the game between sectional host Mary Washington and Lebanon Valley on Saturday, March 10, at 4 p.m. Pacific.

Come cheer on the Bruins as they take on the Bowdoin College Polar Bears this afternoon (Friday) in the Sweet 16 round of the NCAA Division III Women’s Basketball Tournament. We will set up a live streaming of the game beginning at 2 p.m. in Lemmons 8. The game is being contested at the University of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg, Va.

The winner of Friday’s contest between third-ranked George Fox (29-0) and Bowdoin (21-7) will play the winner of Friday’s other sectional match-up – between Mary Washington (29-0) and Lebanon Valley College (26-3) – on Saturday beginning at 4 p.m. (Pacific Time). If George Fox is playing in that game, we will host live streaming in the Klages Dining Room.

For Friday’s game, the Alumni Association will provide free popcorn. Pop and candy will be available for purchase from athletics.

The Center for Peace and Justice will host Akol Sylvia – one of 16 Ugandans showing Invisible Children’s newest film, KONY 2012, around the country – at 8 p.m. Monday, March 12, in the Cap and Gown Room.

Sylvia has lived through a brutal conflict in Uganda and is now advocating on behalf of the three countries that are still terrorized by Joseph Kony’s rebel force, the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA). An Invisible Children scholarship student and who is attending college in Uganda, Sylvia had friends who were abducted from their school by the LRA.

The 24-minute documentary, KONY 2012, explains the importance of civic engagement and tells youth how they can help stop the man who is arguably the worst war criminal in the world.

Invisible Children is encouraging students to use social media to engage influential culture makers and policymakers during KONY 2012. Students will also be encouraged to set up or attend meetings with their members of Congress. Invisible Children believes that, whether Republican or Democrat, arresting the world’s worst war criminal is something we can all agree on.

The university community is invited to hear author Naseem Rakha speak on questions of forgiveness, crime and punishment – specifically related to the death penalty in Oregon – this Monday, March 12, from 7 to 8 p.m. in Hoover 105.

Rakha will present “On Being Witnesses: In the Aftermath of Crime.” The presentation is the latest installment of the university’s spring lecture series, “Christians and American Culture,” hosted by the Liberal Arts and Critical Issues program.

Rakha, an award-winning journalist who has been heard on NPR’s All Things Considered, Morning Edition, Marketplace Radio, Christian Science Monitor, and Living on Earth, is the author of The Crying Tree. Set in southern Illinois and central Oregon, Rakha’s novel relates the story of a mother who must overcome the hate, grief, and secrets that surround the murder of her 15-year-old son, and defy church and family as she attempts to stop the execution of the man who killed her boy.

With the heart of a storyteller, Rakha explores the death penalty and forgiveness with her audience through the lens of our justice system, her experiences as a reporter for public radio, as well as subsequent interviews with crime victims, inmates, corrections officials and exonerated death row prisoners.

The capacity to forgive the unforgivable has long intrigued Rakha. She has witnessed it in her work as a teacher and consultant for Native American tribes, as a mediator in the clean up of the nuclear site that created the Nagasaki bomb, and as a reporter covering state-run executions.

Feeling stressed? The Academic Resource Center is hosting a workshop, “Managing Stress,” today (Friday) from 10:40 to 11:30 a.m. in EHS 125.

This workshop will give effective and concrete tools to help college students manage the stress of college. Topics will include time management, test anxiety, insomnia, roommate and relationship issues, and utilizing stress to your advantage. Our presenter will be Laura Helmer from the Health and Counseling Center.
