Join us for the first Liberal Arts and Critical Issues lecture of the semester this Monday, Jan. 27, when Steve Sherwood, assistant professor for youth evangelism and discipleship here at George Fox, speaks from 7 to 8 p.m. in Hoover 105. The presentation ties into our theme “State of the World.”

Sherwood will speak on the topic “Why Can’t We Talk to Each Other?,” in which he will address the fact that, in politics, churches, on Internet message boards and beyond, Americans are increasingly yelling past one another rather than talking with each other. What can be done about it? What is a Christian vision of discourse in America?

The same session is presented from 4:40 to 5:40 p.m.; however, it is recommended that the general public attend the evening session, if possible.

Every undergraduate, MBA, physical therapy, PsyD and MAT student is required to complete the “Vehicle Registration Form” whether you bring a vehicle to campus or not.

Failure to do so will result in a $40 nonrefundable charge being applied to your student account.

Log on to MyGFU, then click on “Self Service.” Next click on “University Forms.” The Vehicle Registration link will appear in the middle of the page. Click on it to open it. Once open, you can either input your vehicle’s information into the boxes, or click the box that says “not bringing a car to campus.”

If you registered a car, the permit will be sent to Mail Services where you be required to sign for it.

If you did not have a car last semester and were registered as “NOCAR,” but brought a car back for spring semester, you will need to delete that “NOCAR” registration by clicking on the minus sign to the right of the listing. Please do not erase the “NOCAR” in the license plate box; use the minus sign!

Robert P. George, PhD, from Princeton University will present a lecture entitled “Religious Liberty and the Rights of Conscience” at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 6, in Bauman Auditorium. All are welcome and we hope you can join us!

George is the McCormick Professor of Jurisprudence and director of the James Madison Program in Ideals and Institutions at Princeton. He is the author of numerous books in the fields of constitutional law, ethics and legal and political theory. His visit is being sponsored by the William Penn Honors Program. Tonight (Wednesday) is the first meeting of the semester for Redeeming Life. For those who are unaware, this a support group for those struggling with eating disorders or disordered eating on campus. We offer support and encouragement on the journey of health, wholeness and healing.

There are no quick fixes or easy answers to these struggles, but there are individuals on campus who want to walk with you through the struggle. You are not alone! We are all about hope, healing and freedom!

Get your stamps in advance of next week’s postal rate increase. The price of a one-ounce 46-cent stamp is increasing on Jan. 26, to 49 cents. “Forever” stamps that you currently have or purchase by Saturday will be good for the 49-cent rate. You will not have to pay any additional amount to mail a one-ounce letter.

Mail Services has rolls of 100 stamps ($46 each) and a variety of books of 20 ($9.20 each) available. Our customer service window is open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

The Department of Biology and Chemistry is hosting a seminar for George Fox students and faculty to hear Jing Hao present her research, “Thermo-responsive Polymers for Drug Delivery Applications.” The presentation is set from 4 to 5 p.m. Monday, Jan. 27, in EHS 102.

Jing Hao is a postdoctoral research associate in the Department of Simmons Cancer Center and Biochemistry from UT Southwestern Medical Center. This is the first chemistry faculty candidate seminar, as the university looks to hire a new organic chemistry professor.

The university’s theatre department invites you to join us for our winter musical, Parade. Shows are scheduled in Wood-Mar Auditorium Jan. 30 through Feb. 2 and Feb. 6-9. All shows begin at 7:30 p.m. with the exception of the two Sunday matinees (Feb. 2 and 9), which begin at 2 p.m.

We have two nights students can attend for free: Jan. 30 and Feb. 6.

Synopsis: Based on historical events in Atlanta in 1913, Parade dramatizes the racially charged trial of Leo Frank, a Jewish factory manager who is wrongly accused of murdering a 13-year-old girl under his employ. As the press and the public call for his execution, Leo learns to rely on the power of love in the midst of injustice. Winner of the 1999 Tony Awards for Best Book (Alfred Uhry) and Best Original Musical Score (Robert Brown), Parade is a dynamic and powerful musical that will take your breath away.

Seattle artist Brian Fisher will be on campus Thursday, Jan. 23, to mark the opening of his show in the Minthorne Gallery. His “Heroes Before Us” exhibition, featuring prints and sculptures that focus on mythology, will begin with an artist’s talk at 4:10 p.m. in Hoover 105. An opening reception follows from 5 to 6:30 p.m.

Staff and students: The lost and found is bulging, so there will be lost and found tables set up in the Bruin Den today (Tuesday) from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Any items not reunited with their owners will be donated to charitable causes later that afternoon, so please make a point to stop by and look for your lost items!

Some of the region’s top young artists will have their work on display in the Lindgren Gallery Jan. 28 through Feb. 24, when the university hosts its 22nd annual High School Art Northwest exhibit.

The event begins with an opening reception from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 28, in the gallery. Approximately 40 to 45 pieces have been selected as part of the show, with cash prizes awarded to juror-selected students based on the excellence of their art.

In addition to traditional mediums, such as paintings, ceramics and mixed media, the exhibit has expanded its scope over the years to include digital art and three-dimensional art. Gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. There is no fee to view the exhibit.

The annual juried exhibit features art from high school students in Oregon and Washington. High schools to be represented include Oregon Episcopal School, Lakeridge High School, Newberg High School, Lake Washington High School, St. Mary’s Academy, Wilsonville High School, West Linn High School and St. George’s School.

Prize winners will be announced at the opening. The jurors for this year’s show are art professors Doug Campbell and Gary Buhler.
