Make plans to attend fall comedy ‘The Government Inspector’

The George Fox theatre department opens its fall comedy The Government Inspector next week. Come join us for tale of mistaken identity, chaos and hilarity (note: the production does have mature themes).

Student tickets are free both Thursdays, Oct. 18 and Oct. 25. Bring your student ID to the door. Employees are provided with one complimentary ticket for any of the shows. Open captioning will be available the last two shows, on Oct. 27 and 28.

The show runs in Wood-Mar Auditorium Oct. 18-20 and Oct. 25-27 at 7:30 p.m., and will also include a 2 p.m. matinee on Sunday, Oct. 28. Reserve your seat online and bring your George Fox ID with you to show at the door. You may also purchase additional tickets online. Tickets are also available for pick-up at the box office in the Bruin Store (10 a.m. to 2 p.m.).

Swing by biology department to adopt a goldfish

Need a devoted friend and endless entertainment? Goldfish are available for adoption through the biology department. Stop by EHS 202 anytime from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday or Friday. There are bags to tote them home. Goldfish are perfect for dorm rooms and outdoor ponds (not streams/creeks). Give them a good home!

University community invited to sociologist’s presentation Oct. 18

The sociology department invites the university community to a special presentation on Thursday, Oct. 18, as Mieke Thomeer from the University of Alabama at Birmingham speaks from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in EHS 102. She will present her research on the positive and negative dynamics of family relationships with health. Thomeer has a unique perspective on the field of study as a Christian, which she will also share.

Earlier in the day, sociology majors and minors are invited as Thomeer discusses her studies in medical sociology, its applications, and its usefulness to the medical field. All invited to Fall Faculty Lecture and Richter Student Scholars Symposium Oct. 16

All are invited to the Fall 2018 Faculty Lecture on Tuesday, Oct. 16, at 6 p.m. in Hoover 105. Our featured speaker will be Professor of Music Brent Weaver, recipient of the 2017-18 Faculty Achievement Award for Graduate Research and Scholarship.

Brent will examine the underlying cognitive structures that our brains perceive, which contribute to our emotional and spiritual enjoyment of music. He will show how a composer can play with those structures to move listeners, using examples from many styles of music.

Come early, between 5 and 6 p.m., and check out the work of our Richter student scholars at a symposium in the Hoover lobby. George Fox students will present their research projects in a conversational poster format.

Both events are sponsored by the Faculty Development Committee. Refreshments will be served.

Tonight: Ambassador Harriet Isom shares about her experiences abroad

All are to view selections from the Harriet Isom Collection: “Vignettes of the Dani and Tuareg Peoples.” This exhibition will feature selections of photographs, art objects and cultural artifacts representing the Dani people group of New Guinea and the Tuareg people of Niger.

Ambassador Isom will give a public lecture on the exhibit and her time with these people groups tonight (Monday) at 6 p.m. at the Chehalem Cultural Center ballroom. A reception to open the exhibit follows at 7 p.m. in the Hoover lobby.

Isom was a career foreign service officer from 1961 to 1996, assigned to embassies in Asia and Africa. During her last decade in the Foreign Service, she served as U.S. Ambassador to Laos, Benin and Cameroon.

All invited to attend Fall Justice Conference with special guest Curtis Acosta

In Celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, the Center for Peace & Justice welcomes Curtis Acosta to campus on Monday, Oct. 15, from 7 to 8 p.m. in Canyon Commons.

Acosta is an assistant professor in Language and Culture in Education at the University of Arizona South, and founder of Acosta Latino Learning Partnership and Acosta Educational Partnership. He is a teacher who fought to keep his outlawed ethnic studies classes alive. He will focus on the recent federal court victory, and speak about his journey and the importance of Mexican-American heritage studies.

Important info for today’s Homecoming football game

Our Homecoming football game against Whitworth University is today (Saturday), so please take note of the important information below. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.

We’ve got plenty of fun Homecoming activities planned for the game – including a free concert by Hit Machine at the tailgate area prior to the game – and we will be announcing our Homecoming King and Queen at halftime, so make your plans now to join in the fun!

Be sure to move your cars out of the Bauman parking lot and the tennis court parking if they are still located there. This space will be dedicated to football fan parking, activities and vendors on Saturday. No parking will be permitted in these lots.

Homecoming Tailgate Activities
Join us in the Bauman parking lot at 11:30 a.m. for a free concert by Hit Machine and plenty of other activities before the game kicks off.

Entrances to the Football Game
There will be two entrances into the game, and both are located in the Bauman parking lot directly behind the stadium.

Wheeler Sports Center Closed
The Wheeler Sports Center will be closed from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. This means the basketball gym, racquetball courts, and locker rooms will be closed.

Bauman Walkway
The sidewalk located between the football stadium and Bauman will be closed. Please walk around the building and do not move the barricade.

Circle Parking Lot
The circle parking lot near Wheeler will be closed for the day. This space is reserved for officials to park in. Officials will arrive as early as 10 a.m.

Sideline Passes
No one will be granted field access without a sideline pass. Sideline passes are issued to those who are required to work and/or have official business during the game.

Tickets
Students and staff can show their ID cards at the gate to get into the game free of charge. In addition, all George Fox alumni who check in at the alumni tent will receive a free T-shirt that allows them and their family into the game for free. Additional T-shirts can be purchased for $5.

Help student find lost lanyard and keys

I have lost my lanyard that, on it, had my car keys, house key, mailbox key and ID card. It is a white and gold lanyard that says “George Fox” and has a Star Wars FOB and an octopus keychain on it. I last had it in the Bruin Den.
