The staff Christmas lunch is scheduled for Monday, Dec. 6, at noon in the Cap and Gown Room. Please join your co-workers for a traditional Christmas meal and carols sang by Bob Gilmore.

Farewell for Reid Kisling scheduled for Friday, Dec. 17

The university community is invited to a farewell reception in honor of Reid Kisling (Registrar) from 3 to 4:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 17, in the Stevens Center’s Duke Atrium. Reid has accepted the position of senior pastor at Grace Baptist Church in Newberg and will be leaving the university Dec. 31 after five years of service.

Do you have a colleague deserving of the December Employee of the Month award? If so, please take a few minutes to submit a nomination that includes a specific summary of the person’s recent contributions (past 30 days or so) and any other information that you believe makes this person deserving of this award.

Please submit your nomination via e-mail to Peggy Kilburg by Monday, Dec. 13. The President’s Executive Leadership Team will select the recipient from the nominations submitted. This award and a $100 gift card to The Allison will be presented at our community meeting on Thursday, Dec. 16.

Spring course offers instruction on writing, editing skills

Students needing a one- or two-credit class this spring should consider enrolling in WRIT 103, Individualized English Skills. This flexible course allows students to spend one or two hours per week sharpening their writing, grammar, punctuation and editing skills.

Petitions circulating on campus to ‘Free the 43’

As part of the “Free the 43” advocacy week, petition letters to President Aquino and Senators Wyden and Merkley have been drawn up and are posted and ready to be signed at the Center for Peace and Justice.

These petitions will be circulating through campus this week, so if you’ve already signed once, you don’t need to sign again. There are three letters to sign. They will be mailed on Friday.

Art majors showcase work this week

The work of graduating art majors will be on display Thursday, Dec. 2, through Saturday, Dec. 18, in Minthorne Gallery.

The exhibit will open with a gallery reception at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday. Fine art by Leah Banick will be displayed, and she will present an artist talk at 6 p.m. Refreshments will be served.

At 7 p.m., art majors Seth Terpstra and Kelsey Budeau will present portfolios of graphic design in Hoover 105.

TESOL class offered in spring of 2011

If you’re thinking about teaching English abroad or in a community program, don’t miss this opportunity to learn the basics. Enroll in COMM 350, Introduction to Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL), to be offered in the spring of 2011. (The next time it will be offered is spring of 2013.)

The class meets Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2:45 to 4 p.m. It can be taken on its own or as part of the TESOL minor.

November student employee time sheets due in HR

Student supervisors: Pay day for student employees is Wednesday, Dec. 15. For us to meet this deadline, we need your students’ October time sheets by 5 p.m. Friday, Dec. 3.

Please be sure the student’s name, ID number and cost center number is legible on each one. Please total them. Also, don’t forget to sign them and be sure the students did as well. Please do not send students to HR to sign their time sheets.

Health and Counseling offers free doses of Gardasil vaccine

The Health and Counseling Center has free doses of Gardasil vaccine for women ages 18-26. This vaccine helps prevent HPV infection and cervical cancer. It is usually $145 per dose and is a series of three shots over six months.

Please call the Health and Counseling Center at 503-554-2340 if you would like to schedule an appointment. You can find out more information about this in the November issue of Student Health 101.

Final flu shot clinic of year is scheduled Dec. 2

We are having our last flu shot clinic for the year on Thursday, Dec. 2. The cost is $15, but if you have the GFU student insurance it is only $1.50! It’s still free for employees with Regence.

Juniors Abroad, cross cultural informational lunch set Wednesday

May 2012 course proposals for the Cross-cultural Study (Serve and Learning in Community) and Cross-cultural Experiences (Juniors Abroad) programs are due soon. These are undergraduate courses, thus this is primarily for full-time undergraduate faculty; however, exceptions have been made for graduate faculty if they team up with an undergraduate faculty member.
