Are some of your students struggling with tests? Please encourage them to attend an Academic Resource Center workshop, “How to Get A’s on All Your Tests (or at Least Become a Better Test-Taker),” tomorrow (Friday) from 10:40 to 11:30 a.m. in EHS 125.
Rick Muthiah, associate director of learning support services, will cover several strategies for improving performance on tests. If you have students you feel would benefit from this workshop, please encourage them to attend.

Employees are invited to join students to watch the movie Amazing Grace, the captivating story of William Wilberforce, the man largely responsible for the abolition of the British slave trade. At the end, we’ll have a brief discussion about how we can apply the values from this movie to our lives in 2014.

Valentine’s Day is right around the corner and we don’t want you to be caught off guard. Come to the Bruin Den on Thursday, Feb. 6, between noon and 1:20 p.m. or 2:45 and 4 p.m. to purchase a Valentine’s candy package for that special someone in your life.
The packages contain a variety of sweets, including chocolates, lollipops and gummy hearts. These Valentine packages will only cost you $1.50! If you miss your chance to stop by our table on Thursday, then we will also be in the Bruin Den on Friday, Feb. 7, from 11 a.m. to noon. Be aware, though, that we will only be selling for as long as supplies last.
This is your chance to share the love with friends, family members, and significant others while supporting the George Fox University V.C.R team in the Entrepreneurship 300 class.

The university community is invited to a free presentation by Robert P. George, PhD, from Princeton University this week on the Newberg campus. George will present a lecture entitled “Religious Liberty and the Rights of Conscience” at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 6, in Bauman Auditorium.
George is the McCormick Professor of Jurisprudence and director of the James Madison Program in Ideals and Institutions at Princeton. He is the author of numerous books in the fields of constitutional law, ethics and legal and political theory. His visit is being sponsored by the William Penn Honors Program. More information on George and his presentation is available here.

The IRS has adjusted the standard mileage rate used to calculate the cost of operating an automobile for business. The rate has dropped from 56.5 cents per mile to 56 cents per mile. All mileage occurring on or after Feb. 1 will be reimbursed at the 56-cent rate.

The financial affairs office will implement an on-site electronic deposit system beginning in late February. Under the new system, checks will be deposited on-site, while cash will be taken to the bank and deposited separately.
To track deposits more efficiently under the new system, we are requesting that cash deposits be submitted separately from the check deposits, beginning Feb. 5.

Spring Serve applications are now open! We are sending teams to Ghormley Meadows Christian Camp, Neah Bay, Wash., Seattle, San Francisco and the Yakima Indian Reservation. For more information about the trip, feel free to email us!
The trips are during spring break, Saturday afternoon (March 22) to Saturday (March 29). The application can be found at this link. The applications are due on Feb. 21. No late applications will be accepted.
If you are interested in being a student leader on a trip, the application deadline is Feb. 14. The application can be found on the same site.

Community members are encouraged to join the George Fox University Master Chorus at its first rehearsal on Tuesday, Feb. 11, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in Ross 208 (choir room).
Rehearsals will be every Tuesday in this location in preparation for the April 25 performance of John Rutter’s composition Mass of the Children. Master chorus members will join with the university’s Concert Choir, Women’s Chorale, select Women’s Ensemble from Newberg High School, and the Chehalem Symphony Orchestra. The concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. that evening.
Participants are expected to have previous choir experience, average to above-average sight reading skills and the ability to attend rehearsals. There is no audition or cost, and director’s permission is required. Music will be supplied by the university.

Dr. Bill Newsome, PhD, an investigator of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute and Professor of Neurobiology at Stanford University School of Medicine, will present “Brain, Mind & Free Will: Did My Neurons Make Me Do It?” Among the questions to be discussed: “Are we just the sum of our neurons?,” “Does my brain shape me, or do I shape my brain?” and “Is freedom of choice an illusion?”

The Department of English invites you to the Faith and Culture Writers Conference taking place on the Newberg campus Friday and Saturday, March 7-8. A number of well-known writers will be on campus, including Sarah Bessey, Tony Kriz, Sarah Thebarge and Deidra Riggs, among others.
The event also offers the opportunity to meet with literary agents and editors. The conference is for those seeking inspiration in their writing, and in their lives. We will have Chinese food for dinner, followed by entertainment from George Fox international students, a video of the Chinese new year celebration, and other festivities.

Got jeans? The university’s Lip Sync winners, The Campbells, are hosting a “Jeans for Teens” charity event now through Feb. 15!
We are collecting jeans of any condition – blue, black, ripped, new, etc. – for a youth-oriented, nonprofit organization called DoSomething. We’ll be in the Bruin Den on weekdays from noon to 2 p.m., but there will also be bins located in the dorms and in the Bruin Den for donations. Spread the word before it ends!
