Fire system testing will be done in Roberts Center

Thursday, February 6th, 2020

Plant Services will be doing fire system testing in the Roberts Center Tuesday through Thursday, Feb. 11-13. The testing will start after noon on Tuesday and Wednesday, and after 9 a.m. on Thursday.

Every detector will be tested (hallways, offices and classrooms). The strobes and horns will be silenced during the testing, but the control panel will beep a notification.

What is the test? A Plant Services technician will be spraying simulated smoke by every detector head. When the detector notices the smoke, the panel will beep. (There is no way to silence the panel.)

On Thursday, Feb. 13, Plant Services will return after 5 p.m. to test the strobes and horns. During this test, the horns will sound for 30 minutes and will be very unpleasant. The testing will be over by 6:30 p.m. that evening.

Thank you for your patience as we ensure your safety! Questions? Contact Dixie Downey at ddowney@georgefox.edu.

Faculty development opportunity: Role-immersion pedagogy

Thursday, February 6th, 2020

Verdis Robinson (Black History Month guest speaker) and Paul Otto are running a faculty development workshop on role-immersion pedagogy from 1 to 3 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 10, in Roberts 120.

Reacting pedagogy engages students more deeply than common classroom practices and combines content instruction along with critical thinking, public speaking, persuasive writing, and teamwork. It is used in disciplines across the arts and sciences. As one professor said, “It’s the most rewarding teaching you can do, because students will take ownership of their learning.”

This two-hour workshop is a hands-on introduction to the pedagogy through a game that explores race, class, and frontier conflict in colonial Virginia. It will be a challenging and fun way to meet some of your faculty development credits.

Sign up here. Questions? Contact Paul Otto at potto@georgefox.edu.

Donate these items to The Closet Project

Wednesday, February 5th, 2020

The Bruin Store launched The Closet Project last month. While we were expecting under 100 students to come shop during our three-hour event, we served more than 275 students and sold more than 380 articles of clothing!

The excitement and interest of the students was wonderful, and has now resulted in specific sizing and alteration requests. Do you have any of the below items that you would be willing to donate?

  • Women’s black dress pants in sizes four to eight
  • Men’s jackets, dress shirts or polos in sizes 2XL-4XL in all colors
  • Men’s dress shoes in sizes eight to eleven
  • Women’s blazers in sizes small, medium, or extra-large
  • Women’s dresses in sizes extra-small to medium
  • Women’s nice shirts and blouses in sizes extra-small to large
  • Dark denim (in good condition) in any size
  • The ability to sew a button for a student with an interview coming up

Thank you to all who have donated and contributed so far! We hope to rebuild our inventory and host another event in April.

Information about service animals on campus

Wednesday, February 5th, 2020

As service animals and emotional support animals become more common in public venues, a few guidelines will be helpful to promote positive experiences for students, faculty and staff within the George Fox  community. These guidelines are intended to protect the rights and safety of all community members.

No one should interact with a service animal or emotional support animal unless given permission by the handler.

In situations where it is not obvious that the dog is a service animal, employees may ask two specific questions: (1) Is the dog a service animal required because of a disability? and (2) What work or task has the dog been trained to perform?

Staff are not allowed to request any documentation for the dog, require that the dog demonstrate its task, or inquire about the nature of the person’s disability (see these ADA guidelines).

If a dog is not trained to perform work or a task, an employee may ask the handler not to bring the animal into the room or building. Emotional support animals that provide comfort but do not perform a task are not service animals.

More information about service animals and emotional support animals is available at this link. If you have questions related to a service animal or emotional support animal on campus, contact Rick Muthiah (rmuthiah@georgefox.edu), director of Learning Support Services.
