Employees welcome to diversity discussion Thursday

As God’s kingdom is culturally and racially diverse, we are excited to see this diversity evolve at George Fox University. At the same time, we know there is much to learn and discuss regarding the topic.

Multicultural Services will be available to answer questions relative to diversity in our campus community at a brown bag lunch from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 27, in the Bruin Den Annex.  There is not a set agenda, but a relaxed atmosphere of discussion. We also will provide some valuable resources.

The meeting will provide George Fox employees an opportunity to receive campus updates, be involved in planning processes, and dialogue with President Robin Baker. Read proposals prior to Friday’s faculty meeting

Please read the proposals for faculty meeting that Missy Terry (Academic Affairs) sent out prior to Friday’s meeting, scheduled from 10:40 to 11:30 a.m. in Hoover 105.

In the past, paper copies of the proposals were provided at faculty meeting. Many extras were left over, so only a limited number will be provided from now on, in an effort to conserve paper.

Also, comments on proposals are probably best formulated when the faculty member has read the proposal ahead of time.

Are you willing to share your expertise and help raise the visibility of George Fox University? The Oregonian and Oregon Public Broadcasting are both looking for people to share insights and opinions on various topics.

The OPB Public Insight Network will send you an e-mail no more than once a month asking for your insights on topics relevant to your area of expertise. The Oregonian is seeking a select group of writers to publish opinion pieces regularly for three months.

Ruth Baker hosts soup and salad supper Oct. 8

The women of George Fox University are welcome to a soup and salad supper from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 8, at the president’s home at 402 S. College St.

Ruth Baker will host the event. Attendees should bring a salad to share; soup and bread will be provided. There is no need to R.S.V.P.

Verizon Wireless discount available to employees

Because the university uses Verizon as its wireless provider, employees who currently have Verizon Wireless service or who sign up to become a Verizon Wireless customer can begin enjoying a 6 percent discount off their current costs. This applies to service, phones, and accessories.

If you would like to sign up for this discount or get more information, visit Ray McKean, the university’s Verizon Wireless representative, in the Bruin Den commons area between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 25. A separate site visit will be arranged for the Portland Center at a later date.

Director of Web Development position is open

The position of Director of Web Development is being vacated by Gloria Foltz and is open to George Fox employees at this time.  It will remain open until 5 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 27. Foltz has accepted the position of executive assistant to the vice president for enrollment services.

Third annual ‘Eat Local Challenge’ on Sept. 25

Ginger Hoover’s retirement celebration set for Sept. 28

Employees are welcome to say farewell to Ginger Hoover (Plant Service) at an open house in the Stevens Center Atrium from 3 to 4 p.m. Friday, Sept. 28. Cards are welcome.

Ginger will be retiring after 25 years of service to George Fox, 22 of which she served as superintendent of Custodial Services. She served on student life committees, advised the Staff Development Committee, started the university’s recycling program, chaired the first emergency preparedness committee, and helped formulate many policies adopted on campus.

Garden fest celebrates wisdom of farming Sept. 20

Come celebrate the wisdom of farming at the inaugural Community Garden Fest from 6:45 to 8:45 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 20. The community garden is located north of the Villa Academic Complex, where the hospital’s helipad used to be. The event, sponsored by the Philosophy Club and keepers of the community garden, will feature live music, a drum circle, and fresh food from the garden (grilled veggie pesto wraps, fresh tomatoes, watermelon, and more).

Also, hear a panel discussion about humans and the soil. Contact Corey Beals (Religious Studies), Rachael Perrell, or Tyler Hale for more information. Families are welcome.

‘Christ’s Work’ discussed at faculty forum Sept. 21

A faculty forum, “Christ’s Work and Covenant Renewal: Relational Perspectives on Atonement,” is scheduled for 10:45 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 21, in Hoover 105.

Bruin golfers ‘Swing for the Cure’ this Sunday

When the George Fox Bruins open their 2007-08 women’s golf season this Sunday, Sept. 23, they will not only be playing golf – they will be raising money for the Susan G. Komen Foundation for breast cancer research.

The Bruins will tee off at 1 p.m. in the Pacific 5-Way Tournament at Quail Valley Golf Course in Banks, Ore.  Technocom, Inc., a total communication technology provider based in Wilsonville, Ore., will pay $10 to the Komen Foundation for each par and/or birdie that is made by any George Fox player. The golfers also will be wearing pink hats in an effort to raise awareness for breast cancer research.

Anyone wishing to pledge money toward the Bruins’ “Swing for the Cure” should contact head coach MaryJo McCloskey at 503-709-7543.
