Brian Swarts, national coordinator for the U.S. Micah Challenge, will lead a symposium from 7:30 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 18, in the Murdock Learning Resource Center’s Special Collections Room on the second floor.

Come and meet Swarts to find out about the U.S. Micah Challenge, a campaign that is part of a global network dealing with worldwide poverty. Swarts will discuss the goals of his organization and present some opportunities for George Fox students to get directly involved. Refreshments will be served at 7:15 p.m.

Come learn how to buy, sell, and finance a house. Willcuts Company Realtors and the Office of Student Life will host a real estate class from 7 to 9 p.m. both Tuesday, Nov. 18, and Wednesday, Nov. 19, in Stevens 109.

Tuesday’s session will cover “Financing and Title + Escrow.” Wednesday’s session will cover “Finding the Right House and Making an Offer.” Topics to be covered:

• How to make an offer
• What does my credit score mean?
• What do I need to buy a house?
• What does this all mean given today’s economy?

Free pizza and drinks will be provided.

The Department of Performing Arts is presenting another Students in Recital.  Come support our music students as they present what they have been working on this year. This month’s session is scheduled Friday, Nov. 14 from 12:40 to 1:30 p.m. in Bauman Auditorium.

If you’re planning to teach English abroad or in a community program, don’t miss this opportunity to learn the basics. Take COMM 350 Introduction to Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL).

Offered in Spring 2009. Scheduled Monday and Wednesday, 3:40-4:55 p.m.  The next time it will be offered is Spring 2011.

The Department of Performing Arts presents the Chehalem Symphony Orchestra in concert on Wednesday, Nov. 19 at 7:30 p.m. in Bauman Auditorium. Admission is free.  The concert will feature selections from Verdi, Schubert, Mendelssonn and Otto Nicolai.  The orchestra, comprised of students and members of the community, will be presenting their first concert with new director, Mr. Ben Brooks.  Please come support them and enjoy a night of classics.

A Faculty Teaching Forum, “What Would You Want From a Center for Teaching and Learning?,” will be presented by Rick Muthiah (Center for Teaching and Learning) from 3:40 to 4:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 13, in Hoover 104 (Hoover Library).

This session will be a discussion about the role of a Center for Teaching and Learning as part of the larger endeavor of faculty development. Is faculty development in general, and discussion about teaching in particular, an important component of your life at George Fox? What would help you develop as a teacher? What conversations about teaching do you wish you could be part of? How do you think educational technology supports or detracts from your teaching? Bring your thoughts for this roundtable discussion.

Refreshments will be served. No R.S.V.P. is required. All faculty — full time, part time and adjunct — are invited to attend Faculty Teaching Forums (FTFs).

It’s that time of the year once again: The university’s baseball team is selling oranges. A 20-pound box of sweet California oranges is $22 ($10 is tax deductible). Just a reminder: You must show your university ID card when attending home basketball games. Please go to the ticket table, show your ID and have your hand stamped. Playoff games are not covered.

The university’s BlueZone group is hosting the first Letterman Jacket Month in December. Bring your letterman jacket back after Thanksgiving break and wear it until Christmas break. All students, employees and pets are encouraged to participate. A large group photo will be taken in the quad at 3:30 p.m. Dec. 2.

Once a year, the George Fox Symphonic Band invites a guest ensemble to perform with them at a fall concert. This year, the Newberg Community Band will be joining the band in a concert at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 17, in Bauman Auditorium. Please join the music department in supporting our students and community members. Admission is free.

FoxTALE is being upgraded from version 1.8.6+ to version 1.9 on Monday, Dec. 29. FoxTALE will be unavailable from 6 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 29, until 6 a.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 30.

The seniors in the Liberal Arts and Critical Issues group will be presenting their research on Islam on Monday, Nov. 24. We are looking for 30 people to help judge these exhibits. Each judge will have four to five projects to examine. This should take approximately one hour, and no experience is necessary. We hope to have administrators, faculty and staff participate. The exhibits will be up in EHS and Hoover from noon to 3 p.m. that day.

The all-employee meeting originally scheduled for Thursday, Nov. 20, has been moved to 4 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 18, in Hoover 105. Please make a note of this scheduling change. The meeting will provide employees with an opportunity to receive campus updates. Your attendance is strongly encouraged.

Shahriar Ahmed, president of the Bilal Mosque Association in Beaverton, and Rabbi Joseph Wolf from Havurah Shalom in Portland will have an interfaith dialogue at the university’s Liberal Arts and Critical Issues Forum from 4:40 to 5:30 p.m. and from 7 to 7:50 p.m. Monday, Nov. 10, in Hoover 105. The Office of Spiritual Life is hosting a series of sessions on the topic “Real Relationships: Dating & Marriage, Reality and Myths at George Fox” Nov. 10-12.

Professors Mark (Psychology) and Lisa (Sociology) McMinn will speak in both 10:40 a.m. chapel services Monday and Wednesday. Monday’s chapel is entitled “Relationships: What Students Told Us;” Wednesday’s chapel is entitled “Fears and Barriers: Students Speak.”

Two evening sessions also are scheduled. On Monday at 9 p.m. in Hoover 105, the McMinns will host a Q&A session. On Tuesday, Nov. 11, a “For Women Only” session is scheduled at 10 p.m. in Hoover 105, and, concurrently, a “For Men Only” discussion will take place in The Foxhole.

The School of Management will host a roundtable discussion from 7 to 9 a.m. Friday, Nov. 14, in the Portland Center’s Room 285. Dean Ken Armstrong (School of Management) will moderate a panel of experts who will discuss the global financial crisis.
