Call for February time sheets and time-off reports

Would you please take a few minutes to submit your February time sheet (support staff) or time-off report (administrators) to your supervisor right away? As always, please be sure it is complete (including your ID number), accurate, and signed by both you and your supervisor before sending it to HR at Box 6108. (If your supervisor is not available to sign it, please send a copy to HR and keep the original until it has been signed.)

Valentina Lisitsa DVDs are available for purchase

DVDs featuring Valentina Lisitsa, the pianist who visited the university for its fourth annual Bösendorfer Concert Series last week, are available for purchase. The DVDS cost $20 apiece and include works by Liszt, Ravel, Chopin and Rachmaninoff. Exact cash or checks, made out to George Fox University, are accepted.

Dee, Badley speak at Faculty Teaching Forum Wednesday

Amy Dee and Ken Badley (School of Education) will present “Authorizing Ourselves in the Classroom” at a Faculty Teaching Forum scheduled from 12:40 to 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 3, in Cap and Gown A.

The discussion will cover how professors authorize themselves in front of students and how this happens in a culture of care, “informationism,” and a new generation of students’ expectations.

To reserve a lunch, e-mail Jere Witherspoon (jwithers@georgefox.edu) by 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 2. Everyone is welcome to attend the session, whether bringing a lunch or reserving a lunch.

All faculty — full time, part time, and adjunct — are invited to attend Faculty Teaching Forums (FTFs). The schedule of upcoming sessions is available online. Video podcasts of FTFs will be available on iTunesU.

Community garden hosts information sessions March 1

The Community Garden is getting ready for its fourth annual season. If you are interested in finding out what’s involved, please come to a short meeting on Monday, March 1, to find out. This is open for students or faculty or staff and others.

The garden is a great way to have inexpensive, delicious food. You can be a member even if you will be out of Newberg for the summer. Come find out more at the Hoover Lounge (second floor). You have the option of attending an 8 p.m. or 9 p.m. meeting.

Science Open House event open to families March 16

The university’s science departments will host a Science Open House for George Fox families from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 16, in EHS and Wood-Mar. Come enjoy a fun-filled evening delighting in science. There will be interactive displays, thrilling demonstrations, and a child-friendly dinner. Come join us!

Hulbert speaks on issues of body image and pop culture Monday

This Monday, March 1, Melanie Hulbert, associate professor of sociology, will speak on issues of body image and popular culture for the university’s Liberal Arts in Critical Issues Forum. Melanie specializes in sociology gender issues and the family. She recently received an award of excellence from WorldatWork Journal for her research on gender roles in the workplace.

University’s Trauma Response Institute launches humanitarian aid program

The Trauma Response Institute, coordinated by the Graduate Department of Counseling, is launching a program to assist humanitarian aid workers.

The focus of upcoming meetings is in support of Haitian missionaries and earthquake relief workers. Meetings are scheduled from 6:30 to 8 p.m. on March 2, April 6 and May 4 at the Portland Center. There is no cost to attend.

The purpose is to offer simple tools to help prepare for or mitigate the emotional impact of witnessing severe human suffering. If a Haiti responder flier finds its way into your mailbox, please consider giving it to your pastor, missions chairperson, or friend connected to service in Haiti. Also, for George Fox employees interested in joining a TRI responder peer support team, stay tuned for information about a training in psychological first-aid for peer responders.

Several music students will take to the Bauman Auditorium stage during the first week of March to present recitals. Come support these students as they perform. Admission is free.

  • On Monday, March 1, Andrew Magnuson (guitar) and Stephen Crabb (percussion) will present a junior degree recital at 6 p.m.
  • On Monday, March 1, Roman Kolyvanov will present a senior degree composition recital at 7:30 p.m.
  • On Thursday, March 4, J Rourke (voice) will present a junior recital at 6 p.m.
  • On Thursday, March 4, Aimee Smith will present a senior degree composition recital at 7:30 p.m.

Koch presents faculty lecture March 2 in Hoover 105

Dr. Chris Koch, professor of psychology and director of assessment, will present the spring 2010 Faculty Lecture, now in its 55th year. In “It’s (Almost) All in the Eyes” Chris will present research combining strategies used to study attention and perception in order to examine how people perceive facial emotions.

The presentation is set for 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 2, in Hoover 105.

University Players perform Friday and Saturday in Wood-Mar

Come see our own University Players as they present a worship experience through story, drama, movement and song. The “Players Presents” performances are scheduled for 7:30 p.m. both Friday and Saturday, Feb. 26-27, in  Wood-Mar Auditorium. Admission is free; however, a $3 donation is encouraged.

The Players, a touring group made up of eight students, will showcase their talents in this year’s theme, “Threshold.” A short profile of the troupe is now on the university’s website.

Outreach to women in sex trade planned on Friday

On Friday, Feb. 26, a group of women will meet to participate in serving women who are involved in the sex trade in Portland. We will eat dinner together at 4:30 p.m. in the Bruin Den and then leave for Rahab’s Sisters, an organization that provides hospitality and a supportive presence to women marginalized by the sex industry, at 5 p.m.

February student employee time sheets due in HR

Student supervisors, please submit your students’ February time sheets to HR right away – by Wednesday, March 3, at 3 p.m.

Please be sure the student’s name, ID number and cost center number is legible on each one. Also, don’t forget to sign them and be sure the students did as well. If the student is not available to sign it this week, please send it without the signature, and HR will contact the student. Please do not send students to HR to sign their time sheets. Federal Work Study regulations require that students delivering their own time sheets must have them placed, by you, in a sealed envelope.

If you happen to still have any paperwork to submit on a newly hired student who worked in February, please hand-deliver it right away– no later than Monday, March 1. We need to set up students in the system before the time sheets arrive.

Saturday market in EHS includes food, music, products

Just a reminder that a senior business capstone group is planning a Community Saturday Market from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. this Saturday, Feb. 27, in EHS.

The event will include food, live music and a wide variety of goods from local vendors. Participants will include authors Dirk Barram, Jim Foster and Erin Macy, as well as vendors Sweetest Thing Cupcakes and Yamhill Candles. A percentage of sales will go toward the Patrick Kibler Fund and the Women’s and Children’s Shelter of Newberg.

Holocaust survivor Ursula Bacon speaks on campus March 3

On Wednesday, March 3, Holocaust survivor Ursula Bacon will speak at 7 p.m. in Hoover 103. Ursula fled Nazi Germany with her parents in 1939 and landed in Shanghai, China, along with more than 18,000 other Middle European Jews. The family spent most of the war years in a Japanese-controlled “Designated Area,” often referred to as the “Shanghai Ghetto.”

Tickets still available for Thursday’s Valentina Lisitsa concert

Tickets are still available to see internationally acclaimed pianist Valentina Lisitsa, who will perform for the university’s fourth annual Bösendorfer Artist Concert Series at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 25, in Bauman Auditorium.

The performance will feature all 24 of Chopin’s Etudes. Each university employee and student is entitled to one complimentary ticket. Additional tickets are $10 for adults, $8 for alumni and seniors, and $6 for students and children under 12. Lisitsa has toured throughout Europe, Japan, South America and North America. Student Support Network is available for undergrads needing assistance

Do you know of students who need assistance? The Student Support Network (SSN) is designed to identify and support students who are struggling academically, socially or personally. The SSN consists of a small team of faculty, staff and administrators representing a variety of departments who are invested in the academic and personal success of the university’s undergraduate students.
