University sets aside Wednesday, June 16, as a Day of Prayer

Tuesday, June 8th, 2021

On Wednesday, June 16, the employee community will be observing a Day of Prayer. The two-fold purpose for this day is:

  • To begin the new fiscal year and academic year prayerfully attentive to God’s direction
  • To encourage the spiritual well-being of the employee community

Details:

  • Employees are encouraged to spend their usual work hours on Wednesday, June 16, in prayer and spiritual retreat.
  • Employees are welcome to enjoy their prayer retreat on campus, off campus, in their homes, or at an alternate site.
  • The university pastors will provide an optional video which can be used at the beginning of an employee’s prayer retreat as well as a devotional to guide employees through the Day of Prayer.

During the Day of Prayer, employees are encouraged to:

  • Have conversation with God about their work
  • Pray for their colleagues, students and the university
  • Attend to their personal soul care, talking with God about their own lives of faith, and experiencing the ministry of the Spirit

During the Day of Prayer, employees are discouraged from:

  • Using this prayer retreat day for team meetings/in-services
  • Doing other work (responding to emails, working on projects, meeting with people, etc.)
  • Keeping their cell phones on/active
  • Using the day as a vacation day. This is a soul care day, which may look a lot like a vacation day (a walk in the woods, journaling, reading, etc.) but should have an intentional spiritual formation focus and be directed by God.

If you have any questions, please contact the Office for Spiritual Life at spirituallife@georgefox.edu.

Fire systems will be tested in campus buildings beginning today

Tuesday, June 8th, 2021

Starting today (Wednesday, June 9), the fire systems will be tested in the following buildings:

  • Anderson House
  • Brandt Hall
  • Cary / Beebe / Willcuts Hall
  • Edwards Hall
  • Fulton Street House
  • Gulley Hall
  • Le Shana Hall
  • Macy / Sutton / Hobson
  • Newlin Hall
  • Pennington Hall

View Post

The testing will take about one hour for each location, and it will take three to four days to test all of these buildings (academic buildings are also being tested). The test will be noisy, as the alarm is quite loud (as it’s designed to be). We will try to silence the alarm when it sounds, but the test will involve several iterations of the alarm sounding.

Thank you for your patience! Contact the plant services office with any questions (plantservices@georgefox.edu).

The Hadlock Student Center will be closed on Wednesday, June 16, in observance of the university’s Day of Prayer. Students, employees and members are encouraged to focus on their spiritual wellness this day through prayer and retreat.

Hadlock will reopen for normal hours of operation at 6 a.m. on Thursday, June 17.

Basketball and guest passes resume at Hadlock this Monday

Tuesday, June 8th, 2021

Yamhill County is dropping back down into the moderate risk level, per Oregon Health Authority guidelines. Starting Monday, June 14, the Hadlock Student Center will now be allowing pick-up basketball games and other “full contact” sports and activities.

At this time, however, we are still requiring masks for vaccinated and unvaccinated individuals. We expect distancing and mask requirements to go away once Oregon reaches 70% vaccination status and the state government gives the go-ahead to do so.

Another change happening as a result of the dropping risk level is that we will now be allowing guest passes to resume for patrons of the center. Please see the policy below and contact AJ Heil (aheil@georgefox.edu) if you have any questions in this regard.

Guest Passes

Following are the guidelines for guest passes.

  • Daily guest passes can be purchased for $7 by anyone 18 or older.
  • The guest must be accompanied by a student, employee or member possessing either a valid George Fox ID card or other Hadlock Student Center membership card.
  • The guest must be accompanied by their sponsor throughout the duration of their time using the facility. Guests are limited to five visits per month.
  • Approved guests will need to complete the guest waiver before entry to the HSC.
  • A guest pass allows guests to use the facility and also participate in group fitness classes, climbing wall classes, and climbing competitions. Registration for these activities is required through IMLeagues.
  • At this time, the guest pass does NOT allow access to outdoor recreation trips and activities, intramural sports, and special events offered by Campus Recreation (unless otherwise specified).
  • To use equipment in the facility (like basketballs and climbing shoes) the sponsor must check out the equipment for their guest. However, a membership or guest pass is NOT required to rent outdoor equipment from the HSC Rental Center.

Campus Recreation will occasionally allow access to the facilities for visiting individuals and limited-duration employees or volunteers who do not qualify for a George Fox ID card. Contact the director of campus recreation to discuss the specifics of your situation.

Fire systems testing begins today in campus buildings

Tuesday, June 8th, 2021

Starting today (Wednesday, June 9), the fire systems will be tested in the following buildings:

  • Armstrong House
  • Canyon Commons
  • EHS
  • Hadlock Student Center
  • Hoover
  • Murdock Library
  • Roberts Center
  • Stevens Center
  • Wheeler Sports Center

The testing will take about one hour for each location, and it will take three to four days to test all of these buildings (residential areas are also being tested). The test will be noisy, as the alarm is quite loud (as it’s designed to be). We will try to silence the alarm when it sounds, but the test will involve several iterations of the alarm sounding.

Thank you for your patience! Contact the plant services office with any questions (plantservices@georgefox.edu).

No reservations needed for Hadlock starting this Monday

Tuesday, June 8th, 2021

As of this Monday, June 14, the Hadlock Student Center will not be requiring reservations for working out or using the Hadlock Student Center.

The Oregon Health Authority has changed guidance that now allows us to not track user data so closely and will allow us to indefinitely relax these guidelines. We will continue the use of IMLeagues reservations for top rope climbing hours, climbing classes, and fitness classes.

Please note that our summer hours for Hadlock are Monday through Friday, from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. We look forward to seeing you at Hadlock and encourage you to still say “hi” when you check in!

Questions? Contact AJ Heil at aheil@georgefox.edu.

Parking to be blocked off in certain areas this week

Sunday, June 6th, 2021

We will have a contracted service on the Newberg campus from Tuesday through Friday, June 8-11. They will be doing some overhead tree pruning and dead tree removal.

For safety, the areas where they’ll be working will be blocked off. Please do not park in or walk through these areas. Locations will be:

  • North end of the Wood-Mar lot (about one-third of the spaces in this lot)
  • East side of Crisman Crossing Bridge between Hadlock and Canyon Commons
  • South of Woolman Apartments
  • South of Wilder House
  • Behind Sutton Residence Hall

Cones will be placed prior to the crew arriving at the work site to let you know that the area is restricted.

Be aware of updated face covering policy on campus

Sunday, June 6th, 2021

On May 18, the Oregon Health Authority issued new guidance for use of masks in the workplace. Under the updated guidance, people who are fully vaccinated will no longer be required to wear a mask indoors in most public settings where vaccination status is checked.

The new OHA guidance requires employers enforce the previous mask and physical distancing guidance unless employees provide proof they are fully vaccinated. If employees wish to be approved to work without a face covering or physical distancing, they may voluntarily provide vaccination documentation to HR confidentially by:

  • Completing the Voluntary Employee Vaccination Record Form
  • Checking your email for a Google Form receipt with the subject line “Voluntary Employee COVID Vaccination Record Form”
  • Forwarding the Google Form receipt to your manager to confirm you have completed the process (the receipt does not include any private information or an image of the vaccination record).

This is completely voluntary, and we expect that many employees will continue to wear face coverings through the coming months for various reasons. However, if you are fully vaccinated and would like to work without a face covering, you now have this option. Please take the time to carefully review the FAQs so you are aware of what is and isn’t changing.

The university has worked hard to follow CDC and OHA guidance through the pandemic, but we recognize there will be a variety of personal perspectives on how our campus should transition back to pre-pandemic life. We ask that, as members of a Christ-centered community, we treat one another with kindness and grace particularly when our views differ from one another.

Be well and stay safe!
