Submissions sought for upcoming Spoken Word event

The Latinx Heritage Community (LHC) is looking for performers for the first Spoken Word event of the year. Submissions should be in by Sunday, Nov. 6. The theme is “Where I am from, and where I am going.”

The event will be from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 11, in Hoover 105. Contact Fatima Chacon (fchacon13@georgefox.edu) for more information.

Join colleagues at all-employee meeting this afternoon

The university community is invited to an all-employee meeting from 3:30 to 4:45 p.m. today (Thursday) in Canyon Commons 101-102 (note different location). Employees are asked to sit with others within their department; the room will be set up with round tables.

The event will be live-streamed at the Portland Center in Room 160. It will include a board meeting update from Robin Baker.

Come to the professional health program meeting today

Are you interested in attending a professional health program after George Fox? Are you pre-medicine, pre-dentistry, pre-veterinary, pre-physical therapy, pre-optometry or pre-pharmacy? Get informed on what it takes to get into a professional health program. The topics covered at a meeting today (Thursday) will include admission requirements, the application process and resources available to you at George Fox.

The meeting will take place in EHS 102 at 5 p.m. If you have any questions, contact Vetta Berokoff at vberokof@georgefox.edu. If you are unable to attend but consider yourself a pre-professional health student, contact Vetta so that you can be added to the pre-professional health student contact group.

Promote a safe and positive environment around Halloween

In order to promote a safe and positive environment around the Halloween and harvest party season, the university wants to remind students of a couple important guidelines:

  • Please do not wear masks that conceal your face on campus or at any campus events.
  • Please be mindful to not dress in a manner that promotes cultural appropriation or could be offensive to other cultures, religions or people groups.

George Fox’s Center for Peace and Justice invites you to the Fall Justice Conference on Monday, Oct. 31, and Tuesday, Nov. 1. Our theme this year is “Peace: Personal and Global.” Please join us as we hear from author and chief church engagement officer of Sojourners, Lisa Sharon Harper.

Lisa will share from her book, The Very Good Gospel: How Everything Wrong Can Be Made Right. Shalom is what God declared. It is what the kingdom of God looks like. It is when all people have enough, and families are healed. Come hear about what we can do to bring shalom to our nations, our communities and our souls!

A university- and community-wide event will be held Monday, Oct. 31, in EHS 102 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Treats provided! Lisa will also speak in chapel on Tuesday, Nov. 1, from 10:50 to 11:40 a.m. in Bauman Auditorium. Her book will be available for purchase at both events.

Prayer times set for Friday and Sunday

Join us for a prayer meeting in the Prayer Chapel tomorrow (Friday) at 2 p.m.! We’ll be praying over our campus, our world and each other.

In addition, in the Prayer Chapel, there is a prayer request board. This Sunday, Oct. 30, at 7 p.m., we will be meeting at the fire pit pavilion to pray over each prayer that has been pinned to the board. All are welcome to join us!

Come to Bruin Den tonight for ‘Vive la France Crêpe Night’

What could be better than eating a warm, delicious crêpe on a chilly fall evening? Come on down to the Bruin Den tonight (Thursday) at 7 p.m. for a yummy treat!

In addition to the crêpes is a wonderful chance to support the Haiti serve trip! A jar will be at the event specifically for donations to the trip, and every penny counts. I hope to see you all there!

Paul Anderson conducts ‘Saint John’s Bible’ session tomorrow

Paul Anderson will conduct a turning of the page session tomorrow (Friday) on Volume 1 of The Saint John’s Bible (Pentateuch). Come and “see the Word” as the biblical message comes to life in this historic illuminated Bible.

The session runs from 4 to 4:30 p.m. in the MLRC.

Participate in Voices Conference on Friday and Saturday

Intercultural Life is hosting the Voices Conference at George Fox on Oct. 28 and 29.

Our vision is to make students, faculty, staff and our neighbors aware of the community’s need for diversity among our leaders. It is this very vision that led Leroy and Donna Barber to begin the Voices Project, and along with Jenny Elsey, make this conference a reality at Fox.

We will be hosting speakers including Donna and Leroy, David Bailey, and Alexia Salvatierra who will be leading workshops and discussions regarding social justice, leadership, and diversity.

Get ready to run from zombies this Saturday

Doctor of physical therapy students are hosting a hair-raising “The Running Dead” 5K walk/run this Saturday, Oct. 29, beginning at 5:30 p.m. Chased by zombies through a forested trail, runners will attempt to beat the odds of survival. Costumes of all kinds (not just zombies) are encouraged, and a prize will be awarded for best costume.

Fall Carnival is taking place on Monday, Oct. 31!

There will be popcorn, cotton candy, henna, inflatable jousting, a costume contest at 9 p.m., a pie-eating contest at 9:30 p.m., carnival games and more! We’ll even have a mechanical bull! The fun begins at 8 p.m.

Jessica Hollen speaks at Bruins LEAD event tonight

Join us for our final Bruins LEAD event tonight (Thursday) to hear softball coach Jessica Hollen speak on “How to Manage Team Conflict.”

You don’t have to be an athlete or coach to be part of Bruins LEAD. It is simply an opportunity to develop your leadership skills. We will take basic leadership concepts and spend one hour diving into details of how to develop responsible and respected leaders. The session meets from 8:40 to 9:40 p.m. in Lemmons 8.

While some of the content may be specific to athletics and teams, we feel strongly that every person will end up working in a team at some point in their lives, and this information can be relevant for everyone on campus.

Greetings Summoners! The university’s League of Legends Club is hosting a viewing party for the 2016 World Championship Finals this Saturday, Oct. 29, at 3:30 p.m.!
