Less than three weeks to housing selection

Sunday, February 28th, 2016

Housing selection for the 2016-17 academic year will begin in just under three weeks on March 14. Now is the time to be thinking about the following questions:

1. With whom do you want to live? Group sizes can range from two to six people. Refer to the “How to Choose a Roommate” resource on the housing and residence life website.

2. Where do you want to live? The size of your group will determine what housing options are available.

3. Have you paid your $150 housing deposit? To participate in housing selection each student will need to pay a housing deposit to Student Accounts by 5 p.m. on March 17. Students asked to live with an RA will also need to pay this deposit to secure their spot in housing.

Additional details regarding housing selection are posted on the housing and residence life website.

This may not be something that you have ever noticed before. If you would like to have a conversation with University Pastor and Dean for Spiritual and Intercultural Life Dr. Jamie Noling-Auth, join us this morning (Friday) from 9 to 9:45 a.m. in Stevens 209 for a conversation entitled, “The Parables of Jesus: The Use of Male and Female Metaphors to Describe God’s Character.”

If you are unable to attend this forum but would like to discuss this idea further, any one of the three university pastors would love to talk with you. Feel free to contact us at spirituallife@georgefox.edu.

Melanie Mock speaks Monday on evangelical culture and problem of gender

Thursday, February 25th, 2016

All are invited to a Liberal Arts and Critical Issues lecture this Monday, Feb. 29, when Melanie Springer Mock, a professor of English at George Fox, speaks on the topic “Evangelical Popular Culture and the Problem of Gender” in Hoover 105. The same presentation will be made from 5 to 6 p.m. and from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m.

The predominating messages about gender in evangelical popular culture are negative and limiting, both for women and for men. Melanie considers the source of these messages about gender, and why they can be so damaging, especially to young people seeking their vocations.

She also argues that evangelical culture’s focus on gender, sex and “biblical manhood and womanhood,” often premised on a misguided interpretation of Scripture, makes it especially difficult for people to live in the freedom and grace Jesus offers them.

The theme for this semester’s LACI series is “Christianity and Pop Culture.” For more information, contact Laurie Fair at lfair@georgefox.edu.
