‘Evangelical popular culture and problem of gender’ is topic of lecture tonight

All are invited to a Liberal Arts and Critical Issues lecture tonight (Monday), when Melanie Springer Mock, a professor of English at George Fox, speaks on the topic “Evangelical Popular Culture and the Problem of Gender” in Hoover 105. The same presentation will be made from 5 to 6 p.m. and from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m.

The predominating messages about gender in evangelical popular culture are negative and limiting, both for women and for men. Melanie considers the source of these messages about gender, and why they can be so damaging, especially to young people seeking their vocations.

She also argues that evangelical culture’s focus on gender, sex and “biblical manhood and womanhood,” often premised on a misguided interpretation of Scripture, makes it especially difficult for people to live in the freedom and grace Jesus offers them.

The theme for this semester’s LACI series is “Christianity and Pop Culture.” For more information, contact Laurie Fair at lfair@georgefox.edu.
