Majors Fair

All first-year students and sophomores are invited to attend the Majors Fair this Friday, Oct. 21, from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. in the Hoover and EHS atriums.

Faculty from each department will be available to talk with you about their program and answer any questions you may have. We look forward to seeing you there.

Lip Sync Auditions

Lip Sync Auditions are coming soon! Does your act have what it takes to win Lip Sync 2011? Come show us your star power on Wednesday, Oct. 26! Every group must have an audition to be considered for the event. Sign-ups for spots will be posted on the window of the ASC offices in the SUB.

Tom Head (Economics and International Studies) participated in “Ethics Matter: A Conversation with Peter Singer” at the Carnegie Council for Ethics in International Affairs in New York City on Oct. 6. An audio recording of the conversation is available on the Carnegie Council website.

Ed Gierok (Security Services) was inaugurated as president of the Western Association of Campus Law Enforcement Administrators on Sept. 30. He will serve a one-year term and then sit on the board the year after that. In other security news, all full-time security staff and student officers have been certified over the past year in C-CERT (Campus Community Emergency Response Team).

Ed Higgins (English) spent the week of Sept. 25-30 in New Zealand teaching an intensive environmental literature course to American students in a semester-abroad program with a Christian focus on environmental stewardship. The Creation Care Study Program has a number of Christian College Consortium and CCCU participating institutions (including George Fox) and offers both fall and spring semesters in Belize as well as New Zealand. Corey Beals (Religious Studies) and Clint Baldwin (Center for Peace and Justice/Global Studies) have also taught theology of creation courses for the program.

Paul Anderson’s (Religious Studies) new introduction to John, The Riddles of the Fourth Gospel, is featured on the online journal Bible and Interpretation (“Addressing the Johannine Riddles—A New Introduction”), and the book was reviewed in a two-hour session in meetings at Gonzaga University. Also, Paul’s essay “John and Qumran: Discovery and Interpretation over Sixty Years” was published in John, Qumran and the Dead Sea Scrolls: Sixty Years of Discovery and Debate, and he reviewed the chapter on “The Essenes” in Beyond the Qumran Community by John Collins, at the West Coast Dead Sea Scrolls Consultation at Lewis and Clark College.

Finally, Paul’s paper, “Authentic Worship in the Johannine and Lukan Traditions,” was presented in the Johannine Seminar of the Studiorum Novi Testamenti Societas meetings at Bard College, Annandale on Hudson, N.Y., in August.

Michael (Political Science) and Andrea (Spiritual Life) MacLeod welcomed their first child, Maxwell (“Max”) Charlton, on Sept. 29. He weighed 9 pounds, six ounces and was 21 inches long. The baby was born at Meridian Park Hospital in Tualatin.

Jared Ocker (IT) and his wife Amy adopted a boy, Titus Younghui, from Yunnan Province in China. Titus was born on March 8, 2009, and returned home with his new family on Oct. 1.

Tim Goodfellow (IT) and his wife Laura welcomed their second child, Sarah Louis Iris, on Oct. 15. The baby, born at Providence St. Vincent Medical Center in Portland, was 9 pounds, 11 ounces and 21 1/2 inches long. Sarah joins an older brother, Jesse. Karen Rathkey (HR) is the proud grandmother.

Holocaust drama presented on campus Oct. 24

George Fox will host a presentation of the Holocaust drama We Are Witnesses at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 24, in the Cap and Gown Room. Admission is free and the public is invited.

Presented by the STAGES Performing Arts Youth Academy, We Are Witnesses is the true account of five Jewish adolescents whose lives are depicted during Hitler’s regime. The story is based on five diaries of Jewish teenagers who died during the Holocaust and is the true account of their lives.

The youth recount how the war affected them and how they saw the world. The play presents their innocence and hope for the future by bringing their diaries alive.

STAGES is based in Hillsboro and focuses on education, offering a variety of theatre classes to children in grades K-12. Classes focus on basic theatre education and include some specialty classes such as musical theatre.

Attorney speaks at next Christian chamber meeting Oct. 25 in VAC

What kinds of legal pitfalls do businesses and ministries face today?

An Oregon attorney with extensive experience will provide a brief overview at the Tuesday, Oct. 25, Newberg meeting of the Christian Chamber of Commerce of the Northwest. Guest speaker Tyler Smith will provide a focus on such issues as employee-employer relations, wage claims, independent contractors, business registrations, contract basics, administrative regulations and more.

The meeting is from 7:30 to 9 a.m. at the Villa Academic Complex.

Smith is managing attorney for Tyler Smith & Associates,Rural Business Attorneys. The Canby firm represents business clients on property matters, contracts, administrative law, estate and financial matters, regulatory compliance issues and more. Smith has substantive election law experience and frequently battles governments at all levels to keep them accountable to the people.

Coffee, tea and pastries will be available at the meeting, which is free for newly renewed Chamber members who R.S.V.P. at cccnw.net. A $5 donation is suggested from non-members and guests who R.S.V.P.

Participants in the Learning New Languages program, which started on Oct. 5, are going to meet again this Wednesday (Oct. 19) from 7 to 9 p.m. at the International House. Please join us if you are interested in learning some basic Chinese and making some Chinese friends.

Don’t worry if you missed the first class section because we are going to review what we learned last time while also learning something new.

All students and faculty are welcome. Please come and see what we Chinese students have to contribute to the diversity of the George Fox community.

Be sure to schedule ARC appointments in advance

The Academic Resource Center is busier this year than ever before, with more than 410 visits to the ARC so far this year (compared with 290 at this point last year). Because of the demand, it’s critical that students schedule appointments in advance.

Students often need to schedule two to three days ahead to ensure an appointment; one can also schedule a week – or even a month – ahead. Appointments for writing, learning strategies, academic coaching, or general tutoring can be scheduled by e-mailing the_arc@georgefox.edu, calling ext. 2314, or stopping by the ARC during hours of operation (1-10 p.m., Mon-Thur; noon-4 p.m., Fri). A schedule of labs for subject tutoring is available online.

ARC workshop Tuesday covers writing research papers

If you know of students who would benefit from a workshop on writing research papers, please encourage them to attend an Academic Resource Center workshop, “Steps to Writing a Successful Research Paper,” at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 18, in EHS 125.

Gary Tandy, professor of English, and Jane Scott, public services librarian, will walk through research paper steps and guide attendees to campus and Internet resources.

National peace lobbyist visits campus Oct. 21

The university community is invited to hear Diane Randall, executive secretary of the Friends Committee on National Legislation – the largest team of registered peace lobbyists in Washington, D.C. – present a free lecture from 7 to 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 21, in EHS 102.

Randall will speak on “The Privilege and Responsibility of Faithful Citizenship.” Her visit is being sponsored by George Fox’s Center for Peace and Justice.

Randall’s background includes many years as an executive director of statewide advocacy organizations, a passion for rebuilding the democratic system in our country, a record of achievements in lobbying and citizen engagement, and a spiritual grounding in the Religious Society of Friends.

In addition to her evening presentation, Randall will lecture in an 11:40 a.m. political science class in Hoover 103 and again at 1:40 p.m. in a philosophy class in Stevens 209. She also will introduce the FCNL internship program to interested students during lunch beginning at 12:35 p.m. in the Klages Dining Hall.

Seminary Fair hosted on Newberg campus Oct. 25

The university’s career services office is organizing a seminary fair for students and others interested in furthering their religious education. The fair is scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 25, in the Hoover Atrium on the Newberg campus from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The public is invited to attend.

There will be a variety of seminaries represented to connect with prospective students who desire to be equipped for ministry. This event is a great opportunity to meet with recruiters to investigate different career choices and seminary opportunities for the future.
