The University Store is hosting a homecoming sale this Friday and Saturday, Feb. 8-9. Save 20 percent on George Fox University imprinted items (except diploma frames). Open Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The 2008-2009 Housing Selection Process is fast approaching, and there are some major changes that are taking place. 

It is very important to the Housing Office that all students know how the new housing process is going to work and what to do beforehand.  Therefore, please read through the following information carefully.

Housing Selection will take place March 17-21 on Bruindata.  You will sign up with a group of people you want to live with only once.  On the housing form your group will also rank your living area preferences. 

During Spring Break, the Housing Director will begin placing students into housing.  Groups with the highest average number of credits will be placed first. 

So what do you need to do?

1. Decide who you want to live with.
2. Decide your housing preferences.  The number of people in your group will determine the different living areas you could be placed in.
3. Fill out the housing form on Bruindata.  Between March 17 and 21, one person in your group will fill out the housing form by entering in everyone’s housing code and ranking your group’s housing preferences.  Your housing code will be found on Bruindata.
4. Register for classes.  You must be registered by Sunday, March 23.  If you have not registered by that time, the number of credits you will be contributing to your group’s average will be zero.

Planning to live off-campus next year?

1. Log on to Bruindata during March 17-21.
2. If you are eligible to live off-campus, your housing form will give you the option of selecting on or off-campus housing.  Simple click the “off-campus” button.

A Cinema and Media Communication intermediate directing class was given the assignment of coming up with 30-second spots extolling the merits of the university, suitable for YouTube. The admissions department is offering a $50 prize for the team that produced the best one. Now it’s time to decide who walks away with the big money.

The five spots have been posted on YouTube for the George Fox community to vote on. To cast your vote, just give your favorite spot a five-star rating. The videos can be found by searching for “George Fox University Spot.” (Although we realize this process is fraught with opportunities for ballot-stuffing, we trust crew members will vote once, then get back to work on their midterms.)

Safety is an important concern for the George Fox community. As a reminder, George Fox University does have an Emergency Response Plan that can be viewed at:

This plan provides general parameters regarding emergency response as well as guidelines for several potential emergency scenarios. The plan has been reviewed by Newberg emergency planning personnel and the local police and fire departments. Our campus Critical Incident Response Team (CIRT) regularly reviews and updates our Emergency Response Plan and campus communications to ensure that it covers situations adequately.

In addition to the 60-plus page Emergency Response Plan, all building monitors and administrative units should have an abbreviated “Emergency Resource Booklet” that was provided by our campus security department. If you do not know where to access this booklet or have misplaced or lost your copy, you can obtain it by contacting Security Services at ext. 2090.

Quaere Verum, a group of students concerned about the ongoing violence and chaos currently happening in Kenya, invite you to join them in setting aside Ash Wednesday (Feb. 6) as a day of prayer and fasting for the situation there and the people affected by it.

You are invited to join with Quaere Verum members in the Foxhole at 8:30 a.m. and again at 5 p.m. to briefly pray together. If you choose not to fast, please be mindful and prayerful of Kenya throughout the day.

Multicultural Services invites you to a showing of Pride, a film about overcoming severe adversity with faith and persistence. It features Crash star Terrance Howard and tells the story of a determined Jim Ellis, who starts a swim team for troubled teens at the Philadelphia Department of Recreation.

“Get in Step with George Fox University” is the theme of Homecoming 2008, scheduled this Friday and Saturday, Feb. 8-9, on the Newberg campus. Hosted by Alumni Relations, this annual celebration includes a diverse selection of events designed to help alumni reconnect with each other and with the university.

Festivities include a Five O’Clock People concert on Friday night, the Alumni Celebration Brunch Saturday morning, class reunions (for the classes of 1938, 1948, 1968, 1978, 1983, 1988, and 1998) Saturday afternoon, and a young alumni gathering at Abby’s Pizza on Saturday night. Additionally, this year’s schedule features two special affinity reunions: one for alumni of Pacific College (George Fox pre-1949), and one for alumni of Steve Grant’s (Health and Human Performance) ballroom dance classes.

The university community is invited to attend the opening reception of the Visual Arts department’s faculty exhibit, “Psalms,” from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 7, in the Minthorne Gallery.

Please join us Tuesday, Feb. 5, at lunch, dinner, or both as we feature special Mardi Gras menus. Lunch includes chicken and andouille etouffee, fried oyster po boys with cajun remoulade, and grilled cheddar grit cakes with smoked pepper sauce. Lunch is served from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Dinner features smoke-roasted pork loin with andouille milk gravy over buttermilk mashed potatoes; jambalaya with shrimp, sausage, and chicken; sweet corn and vegetable gumbo; and our version of the classic Bananas Foster. Dinner is served from 4:30 to 7 p.m.
