Study Abroad Application Reminder

December 12th, 2016

Are you applying to study abroad in the 2017-18 school year?

The deadline for the application is Friday, Jan. 13, 2017; however, remember to start the process before Christmas break! The signature form and the medical form alone can take a few days to complete, so we recommend starting now. Also be aware that the faculty reference form needs to be done by Jan. 13, so be sure to get that to the faculty member as soon as possible.

These last few weeks can be crazy, but get started now! Feel free to stop by the Center for Study Abroad (in Lemmons 9) if you have any questions.

Employee Pay During Campus Closure

December 11th, 2016

When there is an emergency campus closure, usually due to inclement weather as was the case Thursday and Friday, Dec. 8 and 9, this is the guide for regular benefit-eligible employees (those eligible for pay for time not worked). All others, including students, temporary or less-than-half-time employees, are only paid for the hours they work.

  • If the university is closed, employees who were scheduled to work that day are paid as if they worked.
  • If the university has a late opening and/or early closure, employees who work are paid for the hours they work plus any scheduled hours during the closure, up to the total scheduled for the day.
  • If employees cannot make it in, their absence is covered by the use of vacation or is unpaid if vacation is not available.
  • Employees who are required to work to assist with facilities and safety issues as a result of the weather will be given time off within the following 30 days equal to the time they worked during the closure. Please coordinate this time off with your supervisor.

A revised staff time sheet for December has been posted to the Human Resources webpage. If you have already started your December time sheet, please download and use the revised form. Staff should mark their time sheets on the day of the closure with hours worked separate from “snow hours” in the bottom box. Since on the 8th the university opened late and closed early, if you were not scheduled to be at work past 4 p.m., you would not be eligible for the “snow hour” between 4 and 5 p.m.

Those who were required to be at work during the closure are eligible to take an equivalent number of hours off at another time. At that time, please enter those hours taken off in the bottom section of the specific day’s time, so that it doesn’t show as hours worked, sick leave or vacation. Then please write on the time sheet that these were “snow hours.”

A final note: Employees who happen to be on vacation or using sick leave the day of a closure should record those days/hours as vacation or sick leave the same as they would had the campus been open. Please contact Katie Sol in Human Resources with questions: ksol@georgefox.edu.
