Play ‘Sunday in the Park with George’ continues this week

If you missed the first week of shows, make plans to see the theatre department’s Sunday in the Park with George this week.

The show runs Feb. 2-5, with all performances taking place in Wood-Mar Auditorium. Shows start at 7:30 p.m. with the exception of the Sunday, Feb. 5, matinee at 2 p.m.

Student tickets are free Thursday night, Feb. 2. It’s recommended you pick up your free ticket in advance online (select “GFU Student” in the drop-down ticket menu). You may also bring your student ID to the door to gain admission, but be aware Thursday shows typically fill up quickly.

Employees are entitled to one complimentary ticket. You may pick up that ticket (select “GFU Employee” in drop-down menu), purchase additional tickets and read a synopsis of the play at theatre.georgefox.edu.

‘Pastah J’ from Chicago speaks in chapel Tuesday morning

This week in chapel we have “Pastah J” joining us from Chicago. He has worked with elementary education and the arts in the inner city for a decade, and in the senior pastor at Canaan Community Church.

Come listen to “Pastah J’s” perspective as a part of what “We Believe” Tuesday at 10:50 a.m. in Bauman Auditorium. In Vespers Wednesday at 7 p.m., we will be looking at Psalm 139 as a continuation of our series “One.”

Reminder: Sign up for 125 Days of Wellness Challenge

Come and join us for the 125 Days of Wellness Challenge. What is it, exactly? It’s a George Fox University all-employee challenge to get moving! It’s a battle between teams for the most points. The winning team will take home George Fox swag, and the winning individual will take home a Fit Bit.

The challenge starts on Feb. 1, 2017, and runs for 125 days, ending on June 5. Teams will consist of between four to six people. Go to this link to sign up. Registration is open now and will close on Friday, Feb. 10. You can request to be assigned to a miscellaneous team or you can request to be on a team with a friend/coworker.

Need test-taking tips? Come to workshop Thursday

Do tests drive you crazy? You read the book, did the assignments, studied the night before, and still didn’t do as well as you wanted on your test. What else can you do?

This Thursday, Feb. 2, Rick Muthiah, director of Learning Support Services, will cover several strategies for improving performance on tests in an ARC-sponsored workshop, “How to Get A’s on All Your Tests (or at Least Become a Better Test Taker).” Join us from 10:50 to 11:40 a.m. in Hoover 105.

Superintendent of Newberg School District speaks on campus tonight

Join us for a Liberal Arts and Critical Issues presentation tonight (Monday), when Kym LeBlanc-Esparza, superintendent of the Newberg School District, presents “K-12 Education and the American Dream” in Hoover 105. The same presentation will be made from 5 to 6 p.m. and from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m.

LeBlanc-Esparza will discuss the educational challenges associated with the American Dream. Among the questions to be discussed: “Can we equip students with 21st-century skills while ensuring all students have equal access to the American Dream? And what happens if we fall short?”

The workshop is taught by Daniel Wendler, MA, author of the book Improve Your Social Skills and a graduate student in the George Fox Doctor of Clinical Psychology program. Do you like Pitch Perfect? Come support your George Fox a cappella group at the real-life Pitch Perfect competition! Quakers and Notes will be competing in the International Championship of Collegiate A Cappella quarterfinals tonight (Saturday) at 7 p.m. at Rolling Hills Community Church, 3550 S.W. Borland Road, in Tualatin.

There are many collegiate a cappella groups from around Oregon George Fox will compete against. You can buy tickets online at this link or at the door. Quakers and Notes have been working very hard to get to this point, and we promise you will be entertained!

Spring Fashion Show volunteers needed

Free food. Now that I have your attention, we are looking for volunteers to help with the Spring Fashion Show hosted by the art and design department on Friday, March 24, at the Chehalem Cultural Center.

This is the LAST SHOW EVER and is sure to be great, as it is features the work of eight George Fox students and alumni who are eager to show off their design skills. Volunteers would show up at the Cultural Center at 6 p.m. to usher guests to their seats, help greet guests, and help with the tear-down portion of the show.

We are also looking for about three select volunteers who would want to help backstage with model management. To show our great appreciation for your help, you will receive a free meal as well as a free ticket to the show. This opportunity is also an excellent resume builder.
