Join us for a Liberal Arts and Critical Issues presentation this Monday, Feb. 13, when author Rob Neyer presents “Baseball: Still the National Pastime?” in Hoover 105. The same presentation will be made from 5 to 6 p.m. and from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m.

Polls suggest that America’s erstwhile favorite sport is now far less popular than football, with basketball and perhaps even soccer gaining fast. But is there still something to be said for baseball as America’s (or maybe the Americas’) most meaningful sport? Come hear Neyer discuss this very topic.

The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee is running a 48-hour fundraiser to raise money for Camp Attitude, a special-needs sports camp that houses kids with special needs and their families for a week.

S-AAC representatives will be at lunch and dinner today (Friday) in the Canyon Commons and at the basketball games Saturday selling old men’s and women’s basketball and soccer jerseys for $10 to $20. Saturday’s games against Willamette begin at 4 p.m. (women’s) and 6 p.m. (men’s).

Get ready for this year’s Industry Innovation Idea (i3) Challenge! Students, start putting your teams together – six students from any major – and mark your calendars for Saturday, Feb. 25, for the third annual i3 Challenge. The event, sponsored by the College of  Business, will take place from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. in the Hoover Academic Building.

February is Black History Month, and the Black Student Union has partnered with Bon Appetit to celebrate! The music of Schubert, Schumann, Beethoven and Gershwin will fill Bauman Auditorium when Soheil Nasseri, an internationally renowned pianist, performs for the university’s 11th annual Bösendorfer Concert Series at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 16.

All employees and students are entitled to one free ticket. Additional tickets are $12 for general admission, $8 for seniors and alumni, and $6 for students and children under 12. All tickets are reserved seating and are available at this link or at the University Box Office by calling 503-554-3844.

Nasseri has performed at some of the most prestigious concert halls in the world, including Berlin’s Philharmonie and Konzerthaus, London’s Purcell Room at the Southbank Centre, Tokyo’s Musashino Center, Théâtre Fémina in Bordeaux, Florence’s Teatro Comunale, St. Petersburg’s Philharmonia, and Palermo, Italy’s Teatro Politeama.

He will perform four pieces: Schubert’s Sonata in A Minor, D 784, Schumann’s, Carnaval, Op. 9, Beethoven’s Sonata No. 7 in D Major, Op. 10 No. 3, and Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue.

The university community is invited to join the College of Christian Studies for its sixth annual Circle of Peace Seminar, “Building Bridges through Education,” on Monday, Feb. 13, at 7 p.m. in Canyon Commons.

Our panel discussion will highlight practical ways in which diverse faith traditions are transforming our world through the power of education among religious, cultural and political divides. The seminar will include a panel of four speakers from Jewish, Buddhist, Christian and Muslim backgrounds, as well as a short question-and-answer time.

The university’s Department of Biology and Chemistry invites you to join us for the seventh annual Dalton Lecture at 7:30 p.m. tonight (Thursday) in Bauman Auditorium.

Dr. Jennifer Wiseman, a senior astrophysicist at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, will speak on the topic “Universe of Wonder: Galaxies, Stars, Planets and Life.” Admission is free, and seating is on a first-come, first-served basis.

In the presentation, Wiseman will investigate what new discoveries are revealing about the cosmos and the significance of life in a dynamic universe. She will also give a scientific talk at 3 p.m. on Feb. 9 in Wood-Mar Auditorium entitled, “Frontiers of Astronomical Discovery: Galaxies, Dark Energy, Planets and Life.”

Wiseman received her BS in physics from MIT, discovering comet Wiseman-Skiff in 1987, and continued her studies at Harvard, earning a PhD in astronomy in 1995. She is a Fellow of the American Scientific Affiliation, a network of Christians in Science. She has authored several essays addressing the relationship of astronomy and the Christian faith.

Preorder a rose for a friend, roomie, your favorite professor or significant other! Roses ($1 each) will be available for pick-up on Monday, Feb. 13, or Tuesday, Feb. 14.

Reserve your rose(s) for $1 each before tomorrow (Friday) by going to Canyon Commons (10 a.m. to 1 p.m.) and purchasing however many you would like. We will be preselling until tomorrow. Otherwise, roses can be purchased the 13th in the evening or 14th in the morning (times to be determined). We can only guarantee you the number of roses that you would like if you preorder!

Sign-ups are open for Spring 2017 Life Groups! Life Groups provide an outlet for students to gather for a weekly time of discussion and prayer. Groups are coed, all male or all female, and are under the direction of a faculty, staff or post-graduate leader. Groups meet in a leader’s home or on campus.

Spring Life Groups will run from the week of Feb. 12 to the week of March 19. Students can sign up here through Feb. 10.
