As service and emotional support animals become more common in public venues, a few guidelines will be helpful to promote positive experiences for students, faculty and staff within the George Fox  community. These guidelines are intended to protect the rights and safety of all community members.

Service Animals
The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) defines a service animal as a dog that is “individually trained” to “do work or perform tasks for the benefit of an individual with a disability.”  The tasks a dog has been trained to provide must relate directly to the person’s disability.

Emotional Support Animals
Federal laws recognize emotional support animals as reasonable accommodations for people with disabilities for purposes of housing and travel.

Service Animals on Campus

• In situations where it is not obvious that the dog is a service animal, employees may ask two specific questions: (1) Is the dog a service animal required because of a disability? and (2) What work or task has the dog been trained to perform? Staff are not allowed to request any documentation for the dog, require that the dog demonstrate its task, or inquire about the nature of the person’s disability (see ADA guidelines).
• If a dog is not trained to perform work or a task, an employee may ask the handler not to bring the animal into the room or building. Emotional support animals that provide comfort but do not perform a task are not service animals.
• All service animals are required to be well behaved, controlled by the handler, on a leash or under voice control at all times, and housebroken, in accordance with ADA guidelines.
• If a service animal is being disruptive, the handler is required to remove the service animal from the room or building until the animal is ready to return. If an employee believes a service animal is being disruptive, he or she may ask the handler to leave the area or the building until the animal is ready to return.
• Any necessary cleanup is the handler’s responsibility.
• If any member of the George Fox community indicates he or she has an allergy or phobia to dogs and is affected by the presence of dogs on campus, please notify the Disability Services Office as soon as possible. We will work toward a solution that meets the needs of all involved.
• Students must have approval from the housing office and the Disability Services Office in order to house a service animal in campus housing.

Emotional Support Animals on Campus
The university allows emotional support animals in campus housing under certain conditions. Students must have approval from the housing office and the Disability Services Office prior to bringing an emotional support animal into campus housing.

Emotional support animals are not permitted in university buildings except approved campus housing (as noted above).

The Office of the President and the William Penn Honors Program invite you to hear renowned C.S. Lewis scholar Michael Ward speak on Friday, Sept. 29, at 7:30 p.m. in Bauman Auditorium.

Best known for his book Planet Narnia, Ward’s lecture “The Heavens Are Telling The Glory Of God: C.S. Lewis, Narnia, and the Planets” will be followed by a reception and book signing in the Bauman lobby.

Save the date for one month from today (Oct. 25) to hear the renowned Mike Van Wyk speak on the subject “Purpose-Driven Branding.” He will speak as a guest of the College of Business and Business Leadership Society. The event begins at 7 p.m. in Room 155 at the Portland Center.

Van Wyk is an expert in consumer understanding and brand building with 20 years of outstanding business results. He began his career at Procter & Gamble, where he created business-driving insights in beauty care and health care and led the global research applications of behavioral science and advanced analytics. Mike currently resides in the Los Angeles area, where he is VP of customer research and insights for Capital Group, the parent company of American Funds and the most trusted financial services company in the U.S.

Tonight (Monday), the university community is invited to a free presentation by educator and designer Silas Munro at Art Talk, a regularly scheduled gathering that showcases artists from all over the country. Join us from 6 to 7 p.m. at the Chehalem Cultural Center (415 E. Sheridan St.).

Munro engages multi-modal practices that inspire people to be the best versions of themselves in order to effect positive change on society as a whole. His design studio, Poly-Mode, primarily works with cultural institutions and community-based organizations. These collaborations have led to everything from information design of NYC Public City Schools, graphics for protesting activists at Housing Works, publication design for Jacob Lawrence, and the identity of an entire formerly predominately Puerto Rican neighborhood.

A seasoned and dedicated educator, Munro’s pedagogy focuses on image making and typographic systems, expanded and inclusive design studies, our present experience ecology, and novel formats of design pedagogy. He serves as assistant professor of communication arts/graduate graphic design at Otis College of Art and Design, and as guest advisor in the MFA Program in Graphic Design at Vermont College of Fine Arts.

The university community is invited to a special presentation, “Peace and the Environment: Theology,” at 7 p.m. tonight (Monday) in Hoover 105. Join us for good conversation centered around the topic of living out a vibrant faith as a part of an environmentally challenged world with speaker Cherice Bock.

The hope is to be able think deeply together about how our vocation and daily practices can integrate an awareness of current environmental problems and work toward solutions with the love of neighbor and nature in mind. The main goal is to inspire creative thinking through emphasizing the beauty and wonder of God’s creation within a biblical framework of hope and neighborly love. Elective chapel credit is available for students.
