Andrea Abernathy joins the university this month as a reference librarian in the Murdock Learning Resource Center. She recently moved to Oregon from Alabama, where she worked as a librarian and assistant professor of library resources (2014-present) and as a librarian and instructor (2010-14) at Judson College. Previously, she worked as a seventh-grade language arts teacher at Montevallo Middle School in Montevallo, Alabama, from 2005 to 2008. At Judson, Andrea was instrumental in promoting literacy in Marion, Alabama, through the Little Free Libraries program, helping establish two free libraries in areas of the city in need. She earned a Master of Library and Information Science degree from the University of Alabama in 2009 and holds a bachelor’s degree in English language arts from the University of Montevallo (2003). Andrea lives in McMinnville and is in search of a church home.

George Fox alumna Alexandra Weatherford has joined the School of Social Work as an administrative assistant this month. For the past year, she worked as a substitute teacher in the Central Kitsap School District in Silverdale, Washington, while also spending the latter part of 2016 working as a teacher assistant at Chapel Hill Preschool in Gig Harbor, Washington. Alexandra earned a bachelor’s degree in interior design and fashion merchandising from George Fox in 2015 and worked in the university’s advancement office in 2014 and 2015 as a phonathon supervisor. She lives in Hubbard with her husband Justin, a 2014 George Fox mechanical engineering alumnus, and their two dogs, Tucker and Winston. The Weatherfords attend Zion Mennonite Church.

Bob Harder (Engineering) was recently interviewed by Big Beacon Radio about what makes George Fox’s engineering program unique, the role that the university’s Christian orientation plays in creating a transformative educational experience, and how entrepreneurially minded learning is shaping higher education. Randy Woodley (Seminary) has been busy of late. Recently, he hosted The People’s Supper on “Race and Justice” at his farm in Newberg. The People’s Supper is a national program that aims to repair the breach in our interpersonal relationships across political, ideological and identity differences, leading to more civil discourse. He also published a blog for the Wabash Center for Teaching and Learning on “The Race to End Racism: Is the Academy in the Race?” In addition, he presented at the Indigenous Wisdom: Pathways to Deeper Awareness Summit held at the Native American Youth and Family Center (NAYA) in Portland. He was also honored, with his spouse Edith, at the NAYA Pow Wow with a necklace and recognized as a community elder. Finally, he was featured on the national podcast “Replacing Church,” on which he talked about the “Native American Harmony Way and its Relationship to Shalom,” and was featured on the “Bartimaeus Cooperative Ministries Webinar” (Ched Meyers), sharing on “The Columbus Quincentenary as A Turning Point in the Decolonization Struggle.”

Cherice Bock (Seminary) is representing Portland Seminary’s Creation Care Program at the Midwest Symposium on Ecologically Informed Theological Education: Implications for Teaching, Learning and Seminary Life, held at the Methodist Theological School in Ohio Oct. 17-18. The event is an invitation-only gathering for collaboration and learning about incorporating creation care into theological curricula. Cherice also recently gave a talk on “Introduction to Watershed Discipleship” at the conference Blessing of the Waters of Life: Justice and Healing for Our Watershed. held in Corbett, Oregon, Sept. 25-26.

Come hear professional artist Tim Hawkinson speak about his craft and experience at Art Talk tonight (Monday) from 6 to 7 p.m. at the Chehalem Cultural Center (415 E. Sheridan St.).

Tim is a sculptor from San Francisco who specializes in complex sculptural forms through simple means. There will be a Q&A after he speaks. Food and drink will be provided.

Oregon State University is hosting a career expo for STEM industry professionals on Wednesday, Oct. 18, and for arts, humanities, communications and healthcare students on Thursday, Oct. 19. The university and the community are invited to the 2017 Fall Faculty Lecture, “Earth, Solar Wind and Sun,” featuring Bob Hamilton, PhD, professor of physics, and recipient of the 2016-17 Undergraduate Faculty Achievement Award for Research and Scholarship.

Join us tomorrow (Tuesday) for the presentation. The lecture runs from 6 to 7 p.m. in Hoover 105. Hamilton will discuss the recent eclipse and how this rare sight illustrates the sun’s intricate and dynamic role in shaping the larger, unseen environment of the earth. The sun shapes both the solar wind and the magnetic field which encompass our entire solar system. Highlights from research conducted by and with students at George Fox University will be presented using graphics and animations.

Prior to the lecture that evening, the 2017 Fall Richter Student Scholars Symposium will be held from 5 to 6 p.m. in the Hoover lobby. Student scholars from the university’s graduate and undergraduate programs will present their research in a conversational poster format. Refreshments will be provided by the Faculty Development Committee.

Still need a job? The custodial department still has openings across campus doing a variety of tasks, including bathrooms, classrooms, offices, lobbies and dorms. You must be able to work two hours every day Monday through Friday between the hours of 6 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. in most of the positions.

The hourly wage is $10.25. You will receive individual training from your supervisor for your particular assigned area.

Fill out the form and provide as much information as possible, indicating any preference of your work schedule, assigned work area and/or supervisor. Print it off and either mail or deliver it to Plant Services at Box #6446 with a completed Student Application.

Copies of the Placement Questionnaire are also available at Plant Services. After we have reviewed your information and have assigned you to a specific area, you will be notified to come to Plant Services to sign an offer letter and complete any additional paperwork in order to start working.

We host a home football game today (Saturday), so please take note of the important information below. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. against Willamette. We hope you’ll join in the fun!

If you have not already done so, be sure to move your cars out of the Bauman parking lot and the tennis court parking lot. This space will be dedicated to football fan parking, activities and vendors on Saturday. No parking will be permitted in these lots. 

Entrances to the football game
There will be two entrances into the game, and both are located in the Bauman parking lot directly behind the stadium.

Wheeler Sports Center closed
The Wheeler Sports Center will be closed from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. This means the basketball gym, racquetball courts and locker rooms will be closed. The Fitness Center will remain open for normal business hours, but you will need to enter through the hallway entrance located on the field level, toward the end of the building near the tennis courts. There will be security officers who will ask you where you are headed; just let them know that you are going to work out.

Bauman Walkway
The sidewalk located between the football stadium and Bauman will be closed. Please walk around the building and do not move the barricade.

Circle Parking Lot
The circle parking lot near Wheeler will be closed for the day. This space is reserved for officials to park in. Officials will arrive as early as 10 a.m.

Sideline Passes
No one will be granted field access without a sideline pass. Sideline passes are issued to those who are required to work and/or have official business during the game.

Tickets
Students and staff can show their ID cards at the gate to get into the game free of charge. Additional tickets can be purchased online or at the gate. Or, visit the Athletics ticket website.

We hope to see you at the game at 1 p.m. and the tailgates prior to that!
