For $3, you can get a cup of hot cocoa with a delicious donut and support the theatre department’s journey to the Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival in February.

While most student concerns and complaints can and should be resolved informally, there is a formal general complaint procedure described in the “Support for Students” section of the Undergraduate Student Handbook as well as on the Graduate/DPS Policies page of the website.

Note that these procedures cover complaints of a general nature and do not supersede specific policies involving special cases such as grade appeals, sexual harassment, etc., which are covered elsewhere in the Student Handbook, catalog or Graduate/DPS Policies.

Celebrate the Christmas season with a handmade card by your fellow George Fox art students. The Letterpress class will be hosting a print sale from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. today (Wednesday) in Canyon Commons.

The sale will feature hand-printed posters, cards and decorations to fund students’ trip to the Southern Graphics Council Print Conference.

Students: If you haven’t had a car on campus and plan to bring a car back after Christmas break and live on campus, please be advised that the ONLY permit available will be for the Austin lot. There will be no Resident West, Resident East or Morse lot permits available. The only exception would be a housing change from Resident East to Resident West or vice versa.

If you are moving off campus, please scrape off your residential permit and bring it to the security office to switch it out for a commuter permit after housing has approved the change.

The Office for Spiritual Life has become aware of a need in the Newberg School District with regard to the upcoming holiday break. Forty-eight percent of students in the Newberg School District participate in the free lunch program, and 168 of the students experience homelessness.

Over the winter break, these children and families will have difficulty getting the meals that they need. The spiritual life office is collecting monetary donations and gift cards to local grocery stores and restaurants to aid our neighbors during the Christmas holiday. The last day to submit gift cards and/or donations to the Office for Spiritual Life is tomorrow (Wednesday).

Corey Haverda joined the university’s advancement office as a gift and database specialist last month. Previously, he worked for White Lodging Services, and later Young Life, as a hospitality professional. His roles included night audit supervisor and night audit manager for the JW Marriott hotel in Austin, Texas (2015-16); front office manager for the Denver Marriott South in Denver (2016); and most recently housekeeping manager for Young Life’s Washington Family Ranch in Antelope, Oregon (2016-17). He holds a bachelor’s degree in linguistics from the University of North Texas (2012). Corey is married to Ji, recently hired as an account specialist at the university, and the couple lives in Newberg.

Daniel Winn has started work as an electrician apprentice in Plant Services. He worked most recently at Precision Machining Excellence in Walla Walla, Washington, where he was a lathe and mill operator in 2016 and 2017. Prior to that, he worked as a whitewater raft and zip line guide for Roe Outfitters of Klamath Falls, Oregon, (2015) and as a construction worker in Pendleton, Oregon, during the summers of 2012 and 2014. He earned an associate of applied science degree in civil engineering technology from Blue Mountain Community College in 2014. Daniel lives in Newberg and is looking for a church home in the area.

Luis Del Rio (Soccer Coach) has left the university. He announced his resignation as coach of the men’s soccer program earlier this month after heading the team for six seasons.

Lost and Found 101:

1. Found items should be taken to the security office, where it is logged and tagged with date and location if known. We then check our master list of lost items that have been reported to us for a hopeful match of owner and item.
2. The owners are emailed or called for any item that has been turned in that has a name or some other identifying fact.
3. For faster retrieval of your lost item, write your name on or in it!
4. Come to the security office to report your lost items as soon as you lose them, and please pick them up when we notify you, as we have very limited storage space.
5. And speaking of limited storage space, we reach critical mass about every four to six weeks and then donate all unclaimed items to charitable causes. Several announcements are put in the Daily Bruin and on the Security Facebook page, so be sure to look for those and come in before the deadline!
6. Items left-behind in Duke or Wheeler stay there; they do not come to the security office due to sheer volume. Portland Center items also stay on that campus.
7. Wonder what happens to unclaimed items? Some of them stay here at George Fox and in the past have been put to use by various departments (umbrellas for large admissions tours, fleeces and Nalgenes for the Residence Life Walkabout backpacking trip participants, etc.). Other times the items were sold at various garage sales to reduce the costs for Serve Trip participants, and for the International Students’ Emergency Fund. This fall, items have benefited the homeless in Portland, Union Gospel Mission’s Life Change thrift store, the social work department’s gift bags for the homeless, and the Sisters homeless warming shelter in Central Oregon.
8. A big “thank you!” to those of you that go our of your way to bring left-behind items promptly to the security office! Their owners are daily grateful when we have their lost item.

Don’t forget to stop by the security office before you leave for Christmas break, as everything is being cleared out mid-afternoon on Friday, Dec. 15!

Andrea Byerley, who has worked as a temp for the university’s Oregon Writing Project as an administrative assistant for the past two and a half years, is transitioning to work part time as a learning support services coordinator in the disability services office.

Don Powers (Biology) and five colleagues – two of whom are former George Fox students –   published an article, “Hovering in the heat: effects of environmental temperature on heat regulation in foraging hummingbirds,” in Royal Society Open Science on Dec. 6. The piece shows that when the temperature of the environment is higher than hummingbird body temperature, they begin to actively regulate their heat load likely by shuttling in-and-out of shaded vegetation. Thus, vegetative microclimates might be necessary for hummingbirds to function during high-temperature extremes.

Bob Gilmore (Faculty Emeritus) published a book of poems, titled Through the Years in Sunshine and Shadows, now available for purchase at bookstores and on Amazon. It is described on Amazon as “an inspirational book of poetry to which everyone can relate. Poems from My Life in Sunshine and Shadows are an uplifting read, with many compositions on life, love and happiness.”
