The George Fox physical therapy program is doing a 50/50 raffle during the women’s basketball game at 4 p.m. tomorrow (Saturday)! We are raising money for a serve trip to Africa in June where we will be giving free physical therapy to those in need.

Hey everyone! The Coast to Coast Swing Dance Club invites you to join us tomorrow (Saturday) in the FoxHole! Bring your friends and bring your dancing shoes. All levels of dancers are welcome! We hope to see you there!

Beginners learn at 6:30 p.m., followed by the intermediate dance at 7 p.m. and  the free social dance from 7:30 p.m. on.

The Chaos is coming. Our very own canyon is hosting one of the most anticipated Olympic events of the new millennia: The Canyon Chaos Relays.

On Saturday, Feb. 17, at 10 a.m. the gun will go off and a horde of newly paired Valentines representing dozens of countries from around the world will race around the trail. They will battle for the title of Olympic Chaos Champion over one hour of racing.

Details:

• No one needs to preregister; just show up to be signed in and be given a country to represent.
• The course is a 0.9-mile loop run clockwise in the canyon. It starts running straight up the hill toward HMS.
• We’ll have a big fire going, warm beverages, music, and lots of cowbell for everyone to enjoy.
• Teams are of two and must alternate laps. Anyone who doesn’t have a partner we can pair with other singles.
• We have Winter Olympics-themed prizes for the first three places, and the first 36 people who sign up get cowbells to cheer with.

George Fox  will serve as the venue for a special musical theatre presentation, Of Ebony Embers: Vignettes of the Harlem Renaissance, presented by guest Core Ensemble at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 3, in Wood-Mar Auditorium. The show is free and seating is on a first-come, first-served basis.

Celebrating the music and poetry of the Harlem Renaissance era in New York City, Of Ebony Embers examines the lives of three outstanding but very different African American poets – Langston Hughes, Countee Cullen and Claude McKay – as seen through the eyes of the great painter and muralist Aaron Douglas.

Chamber music theatre is a unique performance format created by the Core Ensemble, featuring a marriage of theatrical narrative to chamber music performance. Dracyn Blount portrays multiple characters while interacting with Mikael Darmanie on piano. The script was written by Akin Babatunde, who also serves as the show’s director.

The Core Ensemble performs music by African American composers ranging from jazz greats Duke Ellington, Thelonious Monk and Charles Mingus to concert music composers Jeffrey Mumford and George Walker. Since 1993, the Core Ensemble has toured nationally to every region of the United States and internationally to England, Russia, the Ukraine, Australia and the British Virgin Islands.

The production is being hosted by George Fox’s music and theatre departments, in partnership with the offices of diversity and intercultural life.

The university’s Department of Biology and Chemistry invites you to join us for the eighth annual Dalton Lecture on Thursday, Feb. 22, at 6:30 p.m. in Bauman Auditorium.

Dr. Simon Conway Morris, a professor at the University of Cambridge and a Fellow of St. John’s College, will speak on the topic of evolutionary palaeobiology along with the question of “Inevitable Humans in a Lonely Universe?” Admission is free.

In the presentation, Morris will discuss the implication of all species (including humans) are historical accidents that will find no direct counterpart whilst pointing to the Fermi Paradox and how this raises alarming possibilities. He will also give a scientific talk at 3 p.m. on Feb. 22 in Wood-Mar Auditorium entitled, “Our earliest ancestors: Cambrian deuterostomes or just weird wonders?”

Morris was elected to the Royal Society in 1990, and his principal academic interests are in the Cambrian “explosion.” He has traveled widely and received many awards. He is active in public outreach and delivered the Royal Institution Christmas Lectures in 1996, as well as the Second Boyle Lecture.

A dessert reception and Student Research Poster session follows the lecture.

Finance has extended its “In-box hours” by installing a drop box for items that need to be reviewed or processed but weren’t able to be delivered during our normal business hours of 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. This includes any and all items that would typically be dropped in the finance department in-box located in our lobby.

Please be sure that all items are contained in a closed envelope so nothing is misplaced or separated. This is very important because there are no envelopes provided at the drop box, so please plan accordingly. The drop box will be emptied each morning and distributed appropriately within the department.

Snack2Share is a ministry which harnesses the late-night cravings of college students to feed the hungry. When you buy a snack pack from us, you also provide a snack pack for those in need in Portland.

Snack2Share was created by four marketing students who want to make a difference with their school project. Look for us, as we will be selling snack packs tonight (Thursday) from 8:30 to 10 p.m. in the Bruin Den and by the library. Donations are also welcome!
