STRONG, a group created to provide support to students dealing with chronic illness or pain that affects daily life (fibromyalgia, PTSD, ME/CFS, etc.), is getting started on campus.

These things are often invisible to the healthy population and can be isolating, especially as a college student. We want you to feel supported and heard in your community!

The university community is invited to Bauman Auditorium for “An Evening of Jazz” featuring saxophonist and flutist Erica von Kleist at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 26.

Von Kleist will play with the university’s Jazz Ensemble and Faculty Jazz Quartet. She is a graduate of the Juilliard School of Music and established herself early on in her career on the New York jazz scene.

She has performed, toured and made Grammy-Nominated recordings with various artists, including the Afro-Latin Jazz Orchestra, the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, Darcy James Argue’s Secret Society, Chris Potter, Sean Jones, Seth MacFarlane, and Rufus Reid.

In addition to the concert, von Kleist is doing a masterclass on Friday, Jan. 25, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. in Ross 208. School-age students who come (middle schoolers and high schoolers) can get a voucher for a free ticket to the concert.

Volleyball’s rise in popularity over the past 30 years has created a growing need to better understand the biomechanical causes for shoulder injuries, particularly in youth volleyball players.

The biomedical engineering program is inviting a candidate to speak to how their research lab uses motion capture to analyze the mechanics of hitting a volleyball with the goal of creating better best-practices guidelines for strength and conditioning and repetition counts.

Join us from 3 to 4 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 24, in EHS 102 to hear about several ongoing experiments in the lab, including using impulse and momentum techniques to estimate the forces on the body during a hit and ways to compare variation in types of motions. The presentation will highlight connections between the undergraduate engineering curriculum and the research techniques.

The Office for Spiritual Life is looking for post-college Life Group leaders for our six-week spring Life Groups (the weeks of Feb. 11 through March 22). Life Groups are small groups of undergraduate students who meet together for prayer, Bible study and fellowship.

Groups meet weekly for 60 to 90 minutes at the time and location of your choosing. Participants will select the group they wish to participate in based on the details that leaders provide.

We welcome our employees, alumni, family members of George Fox employees and students, and members of our wonderful local churches to consider leading a group. Our spring leader meeting will take place on Thursday, Jan. 31, from noon to 1:30 p.m., and lunch will be provided.

The politics department invites the university community to a special guest lecture, “Will America Ban Hate Speech?,” at 7 p.m. tonight (Tuesday) in Hoover 105.

Presenting will be Arthur Milikh, associate director and research fellow at the Heritage Foundation’s B. Kenneth Simon Center for Principles and Politics. Milikh conducts research on America’s founding principles, oversees the center’s research portfolio, and gives talks on the tenets of the American political tradition to policymakers, political leaders and the public.

Tyler Cuddeford (Physical Therapy) was honored as recipient of the 2018 Mercedes Weiss Award, given annually by the Oregon Physical Therapy Association “to recognize those in our profession that have provided outstanding services to the profession of physical therapy,” according to the organization’s website. The Mercedes Weiss Service Award was established in 1976 to publicly acknowledge the outstanding contribution of members of the profession in one or more of the following areas: clinical practice, education, administration, research, and practice management.

Randy Woodley (Seminary) published a chapter, “Poverty and the Poor in North American Indigenous Traditions,” in the book Poverty and the Poor in the World’s Religious Traditions: Religious Responses to the Problem of Poverty (ABC-Clio/Praeger Publishers).

Jenny Song’s (Department of Professional Studies and Portland Seminary) article, “Understanding Face and Shame: A Servant-leadership and Face Management Model,” was published online by SAGE Journal of Pastoral Care and Counseling. She also started working on another anthology – Global Servant-Leadership: Wisdom, Love and Legitimate Power in the Age of Chaos – with her colleagues Philip Mathew from Olympic College, Shann Ray Ferch from Gonzaga University, and Larry C. Spears from Spears Center for Servant Leadership.

Ed Higgins (English Emeritus) published two poems, “The looking glass predator” and “Disposable Pleasures,” and a flash-fiction piece, “Kitchen Fruit Fly Suicides,” in the Jan. 20, 2019, issue of Triggerfish Critical Review, an online poetry journal.

The George Fox theatre department opens its winter musical Jane Eyre this month. Come join us for a compelling and powerful musical adaptation of Charlotte Brontë’s masterpiece.

The show runs in Wood-Mar Auditorium Jan. 31 through Feb. 2 and Feb. 7-9 at 7:30 p.m., and will also include 2 p.m. matinee performances on Sunday, Feb. 3, and Sunday, Feb. 10. Open captioning will be available for the shows on Feb. 3 and Feb. 7.

Student tickets are free both Thursdays, Jan. 31 and Feb. 7. Bring your student ID to the door. Employees are provided with one complimentary ticket for any of the shows.

The Office of Commuter Life is hosting a Relationship Retreat Feb. 8-10 on the Oregon Coast. It is open to undergraduate married, engaged or seriously dating couples (one person per couple must be an undergraduate George Fox student). There are still spots available, so sign up today!

The cost for those who register between now and Friday, Jan. 25, is $65 per couple, which covers meals and an amazing speaker. Spots are limited to 15 couples, so please fill out this form to sign up. Only one person from the couple needs to complete the form.
