Anti-virus update for Windows users

January 22nd, 2019

The university is transitioning our anti-virus software from Avast to FortiClient. This will result in better coverage and fewer software conflicts. This will apply to work-study systems as well, and the rollout of this process began yesterday (Tuesday).

FortiClient has been in use as George Fox’s VPN software on laptops, and we have now expanded its services by including their anti-virus protection for all George Fox machines. This means that the former anti-virus software is no longer active, and you will need Forticlient installed or upgraded on your computer in order to be protected.

There are two steps that need to be taken for this to happen:

  1. Installation or upgrade of Forticlient
  2. Removal of previous Antivirus software (Avast or Sophos)

In most cases, IT will be able to push FortiClient directly onto your Windows PC remotely. If your system has a previous version of FortiClient it will likely require a reboot. Here are instructions for installing and rebooting the system at your convenience: Forticlient – PC Instructions.

After FortiClient is installed, the previous antivirus application should be removed. You can uninstall the old software from Settings/Apps. If you need assistance with uninstalling Avast or Sophos, contact the Service Desk.

This process has already been done for Apple products, but if you have questions about your Mac or were not contacted, please contact the Service Desk.

If you have any further questions, please feel free to give us a call at 503-554-2569, option 2.

Biomechanics and volleyball discussed in presentation on Thursday

January 21st, 2019

Volleyball’s rise in popularity over the past 30 years has created a growing need to better understand the biomechanical causes for shoulder injuries, particularly in youth volleyball players.

The biomedical engineering program is inviting a candidate to speak to how their research lab uses motion capture to analyze the mechanics of hitting a volleyball with the goal of creating better best-practices guidelines for strength and conditioning and repetition counts.

Join us from 3 to 4 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 24, in EHS 102 to hear about several ongoing experiments in the lab, including using impulse and momentum techniques to estimate the forces on the body during a hit and ways to compare variation in types of motions. The presentation will highlight connections between the undergraduate engineering curriculum and the research techniques.
