Guadalupe Garcia McCall’s (English) book, All the Stars Denied, was named as one of the “2019 Best Children’s Books of the Year” in the Fourteen and Up Category by Bank Street College of Education.

Paul Anderson (Christian studies) published a review of The History Channel’s “Life of Jesus” series on The Bible and Interpretation website earlier this month. His piece reviews the episode “Jesus: His Life from the Perspectives of Judas and Pilate (Pt. 3).” He also spoke in Albany for the Linn Genealogical Society on “The Quaker Family Tree, and America as ‘The Holy Experiment’” on April 6.

Jamie Noling-Auth (Spiritual and Intercultural Life) was among 41 administrators in higher education nationwide selected by the Council of Independent Colleges (CIC) to participate in the 2019-20 Senior Leadership Academy. Those chosen for the year-long program are leaders in higher education who have been identified by their institutions as having the potential for more senior leadership positions in independent colleges or universities. Jamie will take part in a mentoring program, work with experts, participate in webinars, and engage in a series of readings and case studies during the academic year.

Ed Higgins (English Faculty Emeritus) published a spring celebration poem, “Surge of Green,” in the April 14 edition of the online nature/environment magazine Plum Tree Tavern.

IT is selling used computers

April 14th, 2019

The IT department is currently selling used computers. We have mid-2011 iMacs for sale at $125 each. We also have HP 9300 Elite All-in-One desktops for sale at $100 each and HP 450 G2 ProBooks for sale at $125 each.

The computers have all been reset to factory settings. The desktop computers come with a power supply, keyboard and mouse, and the laptops come with a power supply.

Please note that these computers are sold as is. We do not provide support or maintenance on these machines or perform updates of any kind, and cannot guarantee the manufacturers will have parts available.

Gather for these Holy Week services

In remembrance of Holy Week, the Office for Spiritual Life will be offering the following worship gatherings. All are welcome!

Holy Week Chapel
Join us on Tuesday, April 16, from 10:50 to 11:40 a.m. as we remember the events from Palm Sunday to Good Friday. The university choir will be leading us in music worship. 

Shalom
Join us on Tuesday, April 16, at 9 p.m. in Canyon Commons as we discuss the events of Holy Week and their implications for discipleship, wholeness, and the spread of the Good News of the Gospel of Jesus.

Stations of the Cross
On Wednesday, April 17, at 7 p.m. in Bauman Auditorium we offer an opportunity to experience student-created Stations of the Cross and participate in an extended time of worship through music led by our Vespers band.

Maundy Thursday
Join us for an informal celebration on Thursday, April 18, from 12:30 to 1 p.m. in the Bauman Green Room as we worship and take communion together. 

Good Friday and Easter Sunday
Join one of our wonderful area churches for worship and celebration. If you need help finding a place to go, glance at our list of area churches.

Survey: Selecting off-campus study programs

The Council for Christian Colleges and Universities is currently working to deepen their understanding of how students select off-campus study programs and what they are looking for in off-campus study program experiences.

We’d like to encourage you to be part of their process by taking this survey. It will take approximately 10 to 15 minutes to complete, and your answers will remain anonymous. All students who complete the survey will be entered to win a $50 Amazon gift card. Please submit your responses no later than Wednesday, May 1.

Information about vehicle registration

Once the dust settles from the end of the semester, please email any vehicle changes to Nadine Kincaid at nkincaid@georgefox.edu or bring your DMV registration slip to the Campus Public Safety office to update your registration. If you have moved since you registered, we need to know that as well.

If you work at the Portland Center and come frequently to the Newberg campus, please go to MyGFU and register for a staff parking permit to avoid being ticketed for non-registration when you come to Newberg.

Gather for presentation by president of NWCCU this Thursday

Gather for a presentation by Sonny Ramaswamy, president of the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities, this Thursday, April 18, from 2:30 to 4 p.m. in Canyon Commons 101-103.

As you may know, President Baker now serves the NWCCU as a commissioner. Our next full-scale accreditation visit will be spring 2021, and we will be working under a new set of standards. Ramaswamy’s presentation will likely address the standards and rule-making in Washington, D.C., that will impact our work.

Volunteer at spring commencement

We are still in need of willing volunteers to serve as ushers at spring commencement on Saturday, May 4. Come help take tickets at the gate, hand out programs, direct graduates’ families and friends to their seats, and make graduation a special event for everyone!

All George Fox employees who participate as ushers will have the option to receive $50 through payroll, or take three hours off in lieu of this gift. Non-George Fox volunteers will receive a gift card in the same amount.

See ‘The Amish Project’ performed this week

Come see George Fox theatre’s production of The Amish Project, showing in Wood-Mar Auditorium at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday and Friday, April 18 and 19!

The Amish Project is a fictional exploration of the Nickel Mines shooting of an Amish schoolhouse in 2006. Community members in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, share their stories and experiences as they struggle to find God in this story of real-life, radical forgiveness.

Tickets are sold at the door for a recommended donation of $7 or pay-what-you-will.

The IT Department is currently selling used iPhones. There are a limited number of iPhone 8’s available that are just over a year old, and the price for these undamaged 64GB models is $350.
