Come to the ’80s Dance tonight

The 80s Dance is tonight (Friday). The dance will start at 8 p.m. at Edwards-Holman Science Center, but come early – the first 100 people lined up will get their very own Student Activities-branded fanny pack.

We will have the best jams, snacks and photo booth. Bring a friend … you’ll want to dance with somebody!

Take your climbing to the next level with HSC classes

Are you interested in taking your climbing to the next level by learning to lead or venturing outside? If so, there are two classes the Hadlock Student Center is offering that you should check out. 

  • Lead Climbing: This is for experienced climbers looking to develop their rope and belay skills. The four-part course will introduce participants to lead climbing, belaying and falling. The class and certification cost is $20.

    Anyone interested in lead climbing at the student center will need to take the full course. Classes will be offered Tuesdays at 11 a.m. starting Sept. 10, and Wednesdays at 5 p.m. starting Sept. 18. 
  • Gym to Crag: This course will cover a variety of topics, including knots, anchor building, and risks unique to outdoor climbing. There are three class sessions on Sept. 17, Oct. 1, and Oct. 8, from 5 to 7 p.m.

    The course will conclude with an outdoor excursion on Saturday, Oct. 12. The course fee is $15 and needs to be paid prior to the first class session. Participants should be experienced climbers with a current belay certification through the Hadlock Student Center.

Encourage students to sign up for career exploration event

Employees, here is a way you can practically help out our students: Tell them about the career exploration event we’re hosting on Thursday, Sept. 19, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. in Canyon Commons!

Sixteen professionals from a wide variety of fields will share their stories and give our students tips they wish they knew as college students.

Encourage students to visit Handshake.com to sign up and to see the full list of companies and career fields that will be represented. Signing up is required, and space is limited.

Tuition Remission Enrollment: Deadlines Approaching

George Fox University offers tuition remission to eligible employees, their spouses and their dependent children. Please see the tuition remission web page for more information.  

Employees may elect tuition remission for eligible part-time students up to 120 days before the start of a semester. The deadline to apply for students enrolling part time for spring 2020 is Sept. 15, 2019. You may also elect future semesters on the enrollment form. 

Please note future deadlines:
Summer semester 2020: Jan. 5, 2020
Fall semester 2020: May 3, 2020   

Eligible employees may elect tuition remission for full-time students for the 2020-21 academic year between now and Nov. 5, 2019. Employees with dependents wishing to utilize tuition exchange must also apply for tuition remission. Please see the web page for instructions.

Gather for ‘Serving Others through Business’ lecture tomorrow

The College of Business invites you to a lecture by Scott Rae of Biola University tomorrow (Friday) from noon to 12:50 p.m. in Canyon Commons 101.

The lecture is titled “Serving Others through Business: Does God Call People into Business Careers?” Lunch will be provided. RSVP here.

Rae is an American Old Testament scholar, theologian, and professor of Christian ethics. He serves as dean of the faculty and chair of the Department of Philosophy at Biola University’s Talbot School of Theology.

Orientation is Saturday, Sept. 14, from 10 a.m. to noon in Hoover 105. If you aren’t able to attend that one, we have a make-up orientation on Monday, Sept. 16, from 6 to 8 p.m. in Hoover 105. Both orientations will be the same; you only need to attend one.

Sign up for backpacking trip

Are you interested in getting out and experiencing some of the wild places around the Pacific Northwest? The Hadlock Student Center is offering a two-day backpacking trip on Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 14 and 15, to help students get out and explore.

Tomorrow is application deadline to be a University Ambassador

The undergraduate admissions office is now accepting applications for this year’s University Ambassadors group. 

The University Ambassadors are an elite group of students who represent the university to visiting prospective students and families by volunteering two and a half hours each week, hosting lunch and chapel, greeting and directing people at events, leading occasional campus tours and generally helping make visitors’ experience awesome.

Are you interested in making new friends and growing deeper in your faith? The Office for Spiritual Life offers Life Groups for undergraduate students for spiritual growth, fellowship and prayer. 

Sign up online for the group of your choice. Most groups are led by a George Fox employee. Life Groups meet for 60 to 90 minutes weekly from Sept. 16 through Nov. 6 (a total of eight weeks). Sign up here before Friday, Sept. 13.
