Wellness Wednesday: Tips on caring for your masks

August 18th, 2020

It is time for another Wellness Wednesday!

We hope you like our George Fox masks. If you still have not received it, please stop by HR. Below is some helpful information on how to take good care of your reusable masks.

Masks should be washed after each use. It is important to always remove masks correctly and wash your hands after handling or touching a used mask.

Washing machine
You can include your mask with your regular laundry. Use regular laundry detergent and the warmest appropriate water setting for the cloth used to make the mask.

Washing by hand

  • Prepare a bleach solution by mixing five tablespoons (one-third cup) household bleach per gallon of room-temperature water or four teaspoons household bleach per quart of room-temperature water
  • Check the label to see if your bleach is intended for disinfection. Some bleach products, such as those designed for safe use on colored clothing, may not be suitable for disinfection.
  • Ensure the bleach product is not past its expiration date.
  • Never mix household bleach with ammonia or any other cleanser.
  • Soak the mask in the bleach solution for five minutes.
  • Rinse thoroughly with cool or room-temperature water. Make sure to completely dry mask after washing.

Dryer
Use the highest heat setting and leave in the dryer until completely dry.

Air dry
Lay flat and allow to completely dry. If possible, place the mask in direct sunlight.

About Our People

August 17th, 2020

The following employees were recently awarded faculty emeritus status by the university’s board of trustees: Kathy Heininge, Mark McMinn, Ron Mock and Brent Weaver. Mark has retired from the PsyD department but will remain as a “scholar in residence” at the university.

Teresa Arnold (Biology and Chemistry) was awarded the 2020 Manager of the Year Award at the National Association of Scientific Materials Managers’ conference and trade show on July 29. According to the organization, to be eligible for the award a nominee must be a regular member of NAOSMM for a minimum of five years and have a lengthy record of achievement in one or more of the following areas: distinguished operational, educational or administrative activities; contribution to the advancement of the profession; and active attendance in at least five NAOSMM conferences. Teresa has been employed at George Fox for 17 years and has been an active member of NAOSMM for 16 years. Founded in 1974, NAOSMM has grown to include 500 members in the scientific industry. Members are from teaching, research and industrial fields, and are involved in purchasing, receiving, warehousing, distribution and inventory control of chemicals, pharmaceuticals, glassware and plasticware, instrumentation, and environmental health and safety.

Rebecca Hernandez (Academic Affairs) was selected by Oregon State University as a 2020 Alumni Fellow in partnership with the university’s College of Public Health and Human Sciences. The Alumni Fellows program recognizes eminent alumni who have achieved success in their careers or have shown great accomplishment in their work within the community. This fall, Rebecca will be recognized for receiving the honor and will have the opportunity to give an online presentation to share her knowledge and expertise with students, faculty and staff at Oregon State.

Heather Ohaneson (Honors Program) is serving as the project director of a “Knowledge for Freedom” initiative that will provide an opportunity for intellectually curious but under-resourced high school students in rural Oregon to study philosophy, literature, and history at George Fox. The project is being funded by the Teagle Foundation, which has awarded a $25,000 grant over 12 months to develop the program. As part of Teagle’s Pathways to the Liberal Arts, this initiative supports success in liberal arts education, particularly for students from underserved backgrounds who might not otherwise have access to a rigorous liberal arts course of study.

The $450,000 three-year grant has supported the use of modeling in motivating and teaching differential equations and funded intensive weeklong faculty developer and practitioner workshops, including two hosted at George Fox in summer 2019. Due to COVID-19 this summer, Corban and his collaborators developed remote teaching modules, published online by SIMIODE, to help professors utilize active learning activities while teaching online or preparing to switch to remote instruction. Corban’s other co-PIs are Brian Winkel, professor emeritus at the United States Military Academy; Audrey Malagon, professor of mathematics at Virginia Wesleyan University; and Therese Shelton, associate professor of mathematics at Southwestern University.

Call for stationery orders

August 17th, 2020

Now is the time to order university stationery. The collective order helps keep costs low – the higher the volume, the lower the cost. Consequently, it is most economical to overestimate needs and store a small surplus.

I will be accepting orders through Friday, Aug. 28. For order instructions, go to the marketing communications website. Continue to purchase all non-departmental stationery (including “second-sheet letterhead”) through the university’s Office of Mail Services.

Please contact me if you have any questions.

Thank you,
– Jamison Loop (jloop@georgefox.edu)

You can still share gift of words with milestone employees

August 17th, 2020

The all-community meeting may have passed, but you may still take a moment to share your gift of words with employees who are celebrating a “years of service” milestone. Feel free to thank them or share a favorite memory by adding a comment under their name on this form.

Please reach out to Kara Holcombe (kholcombe@georgefox.edu or ext. 2189) if you have any questions regarding the honorees.

Be sure to join open house initiative to help students feel connected

August 16th, 2020

With the fall semester upon us, we’re looking for ways to help students connect with their campus community in ways that are safe and meaningful. Because of the pandemic, it will be easier than ever for students to stay in their dorm rooms or at home, becoming disconnected from the people and offices who are here to help them. We have to be proactive to ensure that doesn’t happen!

With that in mind, we are coordinating a two-week open house initiative where every office sets aside an hour each afternoon for students to drop by. The student life team is generously offering to fund small snacks (PO details coming!), and the marketing communications office will design a map of campus showing all the stops students can make.

Here’s how you can join the fun:

  • Agree to be available for students to drop by for conversations and relationship building from 3 to 4 p.m. every weekday of the first two weeks of classes.
  • Agree to purchase small pre-packaged snacks for students to enjoy while they’re visiting your office. (i.e. candy bars, bags of Goldfish crackers, popsicles, ice cream bars, etc.) Please let Sarah Reid know what you plan to purchase so we can advertise it!
    • Purchase 100 items to start. Hopefully you’ll need to order more soon because of how many students stop by!
    • While root beer floats and hotdogs would be fun, we need all snacks to be pre-packaged to mitigate any cross-contamination during the pandemic.
    • Maintain social distancing guidelines, find a place to host your open house (ideally outside, but indoors if occupancy limits are observed), and take other precautions to keep students and staff safe.
  • Please do not request tables or tents from Event Services for this. It is meant to feel casual, relational and organic as we seek to connect students to their community.

Interested? Here are your next steps:

  • Contact Sarah Reid (sreid@georgefox.edu) by Tuesday, Aug. 18, at noon to confirm your participation. Please include the name of your department.
  • Share the snack you’re providing.
  • Confirm the location where students can find you.

If you have any questions, feel free to contact Sarah. Thanks for helping our students feel welcome!

Online AlcoholEdu course required this year

August 16th, 2020

Undergraduates enrolled this fall will be required to complete the AlcoholEdu course. As George Fox does not allow students to consume alcohol while enrolled, you may be wondering why we are requiring it.

The university has its current policy because we are seeking to create an environment that is safe and optimized for student learning. Unfortunately, there is a lot of data associating college student use of alcohol with negative outcomes (alcohol abuse, binge drinking, underage drinking, poor academic performance, etc.).

This past year, the university’s board of trustees affirmed the current policy and supported the university’s desire to provide education about alcohol awareness and prevention, which is the reason we are asking students to complete the course.

Through it, you will gain an understanding of the mental and physical effects of alcohol, as well as how to engage in bystander intervention. This online education will empower you to make well-informed decisions about issues that affect your years at George Fox and beyond.

In the next few weeks, you will receive an email from EverFi and George Fox with an invitation to complete part one of AlcoholEdu.

Please read the welcome letter carefully so that you understand what is expected of you and contact the student life office if you have any questions (studentlife@georgefox.edu).

Expense coding required for purchases related to COVID-19

August 16th, 2020

For any purchase made that relates to the COVID-19 pandemic, please include “COVID-19” in the “chartfield one” field in the coding string. This field can be entered for purchase requisitions, check requests, petty cash vouchers, or selected in Concur. Expenses would include personal protection equipment like masks, signage for keeping distance, cleaning equipment, computer software, etc.

Unfortunately, only one “chartfield one” can be used per transaction, and the COVID-19 code must take priority over another department designation.

If you have any questions about using this code with purchase requisitions, please contact Matt Hammar at ext. 2006 or mhammar@georgefox.edu. For any other questions about this coding, contact Cris Banton at ext. 2167 or cbanton@georgefox.edu.

Alumni business directory will be unveiled this fall

August 16th, 2020

This fall, the Office of Alumni Relations is creating an alumni-owned business directory to promote and support Bruin businesses in the area (West Coast).

The directory will be listed on the alumni website, included in all communications, and highlighted on social media. The purpose is to keep alumni-owned businesses in front of the broader alumni community so together we can support each other through this COVID-19 pandemic.

Please refer alumni-owned businesses by filling out this form, or share this link with business owners. Please share this opportunity with as many alumni as you can. Together we Stand Tall!

Thanks!

Contact Sara Reamy with any questions you may have (sreamy@georgefox.edu or ext. 2118).

Important vehicle registration information

August 16th, 2020

While all commuters and graduate students were automatically charged for a parking permit through Student Accounts, all student drivers still need to register to receive their parking permits. This isn’t done automatically because we don’t know which vehicle you might be bringing to campus.

After you have registered your vehicle through MyGeorgeFox, please print out the temporary permit from the link in your confirmation email and place that on your dashboard. This will serve as your permit until your permit sticker arrives in the mail in the next three weeks. If your permit does not arrive after three weeks, please contact our office.

A parking brochure will arrive with your permit, but until then, be sure to check the Campus Public Safety webpage to learn where you can park. There have been some parking changes. The 99W lot is no longer available for commuters, however there is additional commuter parking in the Bauman parking lot.

Parking facing the wrong way or blocking driveways and mailboxes can result in hefty fines from the police department. Please be courteous as you park.

Additionally, Campus Public Safety is not responsible for parking information you receive from anyone but us. Drivers are responsible for knowing the George Fox parking policies and adhering to them.

Questions? Contact Campus Public Safety at 503-554-2090 or email Elrike Shaw at eshaw@georgefox.edu.
