Assist DPT students by participating in research study

February 6th, 2022

Doctor of physical therapy students are conducting a research study and are in need of volunteers who are older adults. The study concerns developing a fall prevention program through balance exercises that mitigate the risk of falling.

To participate in our study, you must:

  • Be age 60 or older
  • Live independently or in an assisted living facility
  • Be able to walk at least one block without the help of another person
  • Stand unsupported without an assistive device
  • Pass a mental status examination

To participate, you must not have a diagnosis of a neurological condition or a current illness or health issues that would make performing physical activities unsafe. Also, you may not be taking medications which cause excessive sleepiness.

Participants will come to the university’s Medical Sciences Building, where we would ask you to sign an informed consent form, answer questions, and perform a short mental status examination and a timed up-and-go test.  Depending on your responses to the questionnaires and timed up-and-go performance, you may or may not be eligible for the study.

Those who are eligible will perform a physical performance test in a lab setting, consisting of the following activities: blood pressure and heart rate, walking test, balance tests, and a fear of falling questionnaire.

You are able to stop participation in the study at any time and for any reason. No information that would identify you will be made public, and we do not feel there is more than minimal risk associated with this study.

If you or anyone you know is interested in participating, we invite you to schedule an appointment for testing. Please call 503-554-2463 or email the study team at GFUDPT.Research@gmail.com.

February 3rd, 2022

It’s the final weekend to complete the donor-funded scholarships application! Due next Friday, Feb. 11, our donor-funded scholarships are a great opportunity to try and gather additional aid for next year.

Available for traditional undergraduate students, there are more than 200 scholarships ranging from $500 to $15,000! These scholarships look at a variety of criteria: background, financial need, GPA, grade level, activities, academic major, career goals and more!

The application is fairly quick and simple to complete, with only one required personal statement essay. We encourage all eligible students to apply.

Maker Hub’s ‘Tool Tip Friday’: Markforged 3D Printer

February 3rd, 2022

Did you know the Maker Hub is home to multiple 3D printers, including the Mark Two? Our Markforged Mark Two 3D printer is a desktop professional 3D printer capable of not only printing creative things, but reinforcing parts with composite fiber, making them more durable and strong as well.

It can print in a range of materials, including nylon, carbon fiber, fiberglass and kevlar. Check out this video to see how it works!

The Maker Hub exists as a resource and creative outlet for the entire George Fox community (yes, including non-engineers). We are looking for student aces. A student ace is simply an expert on a piece of equipment who helps train other students on the usage of that equipment and gains extra privileges within the Maker Hub.

Please email makerhub@georgefox.edu if you would like to get connected or have any questions.

Join gift card drive to assist charitable organization recently robbed

February 2nd, 2022

On Sunday night, the offices of The Contingent, the organization George Fox partners with for Foster Parents Night Out, Every Child Oregon, Act Six, and MyNeighbOR, was broken into and ransacked, resulting in a significant loss of possessions and damaged property.

Among the stolen items were thousands of dollars of gift cards and items that were intended for crisis response for the children and families they serve.

The Office for Spiritual Life would like to invite our campus to serve and encourage this longtime partner by collecting gift cards ($10-$50 to Amazon, Target, Fred Meyer, etc.) so they might continue their important work even while they recover from this major setback.

If you are able, please bring gift cards to the SpiL (Barclay) House or send them through campus mail anytime between now and Thursday, Feb. 11.

If you have any questions, feel free to reach out to us at spirituallife@georgefox.edu.

Thank you!
