Hear from author J.R. Woodward, attend book launch tomorrow at the Portland Center

July 10th, 2023

Join us from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. tomorrow (Wednesday) at Portland Seminary (Portland Center Room 155) to hear from author J.R. Woodward on his new book, The Scandal of Leadership: Unmasking the Powers of Domination in the Church, in which he gives a deeper diagnosis to the problem of domineering leadership in the church and points toward a remedy.

In this lecture/reading, he will engage René Girard by looking at scandal negatively, then positively. He will unpack how we will either be a scandal to those who look at us as leaders, or follow the scandalous way of Christ. Books will be available for sale. Sign up here.

‘Thriving Together:’ Physical Health Week

July 9th, 2023

Your physical health challenge this week is to stay hydrated! Being dehydrated can impact all areas of your body. Studies show that mild dehydration can impair many aspects of brain function, including regulating your mood and concentration. It can even alter your body temperature control, reduce your motivation, and cause an increase in fatigue.

To stay healthy and hydrated this week (July 10-16), we challenge you to drink at least 90 ounces of water per day. Break out your favorite water bottle and join in! Here’s a breakdown of how many water bottles per day you need to drink based on common water bottle sizes:

  • 12 oz = 7 ½ water bottles per day
  • 16 oz = approx. 5 ½ water bottles per day
  • 18 oz = 5 water bottles per day
  • 20 oz = 4 ½ water bottles per day
  • 24 oz = approx. 4 water bottles per day
  • 32 oz =approx. 3 water bottles per day
  • 40 oz = approx. 2 ½ water bottles per day

Fill out this Google Sheet with your name and email, and as you drink water throughout each day, make note of how many bottles you consumed on the spreadsheet. Everyone who participates the full week will be entered into a drawing to receive one of five George Fox tumbler cups!

Enroll in new leadership class offered this fall

July 5th, 2023

This fall, D’Metri Mattocks and Dave Johnstone will be teaching a one-credit pass/no-pass leadership class with a particular focus on multicultural leadership. We encourage you to enroll!

Increasingly, our campus and our world build teams which are diverse in perspectives, worldviews and cultures. We want to provide a few tools and prompts to begin developing skills on how to strengthen or be part of such teams.

No current leadership role is necessary. No past experience is necessary. There are no prerequisites. The class will be experiential, conversational, a little experimental, and hopefully fun and engaging. All are welcome.

The class, called LEAD 260, will take place Thursdays from noon to 1:15 pm. It’s called Leadership ADVANCE in the course schedule (an old course name we had to keep).

Please contact D’Metri at dmattocks@georgefox.edu or Dave at djohnsto@georgefox.edu if you have questions.

Follow these safety tips during heat advisory period

July 4th, 2023

According to the National Weather Service, this region is under a heat advisory through Thursday evening, July 6. High temperatures are expected to range between 91 and 99 degrees in some areas.

If you are working in a building without air conditioning or outdoors, please work during the coolest parts of the day. Take advantage of cooler buildings such as Murdock Library, Klages or Canyon Commons. Stay hydrated by drinking water every 20 minutes.

During the hottest part of the day, check on fellow employees every one to two hours. In addition, be aware of the symptoms of heat-related illnesses.

If you have any questions about best practices during high heat, please reach out to Kim Knoernschild, environmental health and safety specialist, at kknoernschild@georgefox.edu.
