When the George Fox Bruins open their 2007-08 women’s golf season this Sunday, Sept. 23, they will not only be playing golf – they will be raising money for the Susan G. Komen Foundation for breast cancer research.
The Bruins will tee off at 1 p.m. in the Pacific 5-Way Tournament at Quail Valley Golf Course in Banks, Ore. Technocom, Inc., a total communication technology provider based in Wilsonville, Ore., will pay $10 to the Komen Foundation for each par and/or birdie that is made by any George Fox player. The golfers also will be wearing pink hats in an effort to raise awareness for breast cancer research.

Selah, a one-day seminar for women featuring licensed professional counselor Pam Vredevelt, George Fox Campus Pastor Sarah Thomas Baldwin, and professor/pastor MaryKate Morse is set for Saturday, Sept. 29, in Bauman Auditorium.
The fourth annual event runs from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., with a book-sales session scheduled from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. Speakers will address aspects of the event’s theme, “Uncovering Joy,†which emphasizes the fact women “are the beloved of Christ and can live in the freedom of hope regardless of circumstances that threaten to steal joy.â€
Georgene Rice will return as emcee, and Bonnie Knopf will lead worship. Mark Demel, a Willow Creek artist, will present demonstrations.

Sara Bruins joined the School of Education to serve as director of the MAT program in Boise. Since 2002, she has been the assistant principal at Eagle High School in Meridian, Idaho. Before that, she gained teaching experience at schools in Lebanon and Portland, Ore., and Boise, Idaho. She earned a doctorate in philosophy of education from the University of Idaho in 2005 and a master’s degree in special education from Portland State University in 2000. She lives in Eagle, Idaho, with daughters Maddie and Ava.
The School of Professional Studies hired Rae Casey as an assistant professor of organizational leadership in Boise. Rae retired from Hewlett-Packard after 22 years, with her primary role the last 10 years being program manager, working remotely with global teams on acquisitions and divestitures. Rae earned a master’s degree in organizational leadership from George Fox in 2001 and a bachelor’s degree in management and organizational leadership from the university in 1998. She is currently enrolled in an EdD program at Regent University. She lives in Boise with her husband, Gary, and they have three grown children: Holly, Erin and Michael. Rae attends the Mountain View Church of the Brethren in Boise.
Terah Moore was hired by the School of Education an assistant professor for the MAT program in Boise. For the past five years, she was a fifth- and sixth-grade bilingual teacher in the Nampa School District. She was also an adjunct professor at George Fox, helping design the technology integration curriculum for the MAT program this past year. She earned a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Idaho State University in 2002 and earned a master’s degree in curriculum and instruction from Boise State University in 2005. She lives in Nampa with husband Andy and attends Karcher Church of the Nazarene.
Keith Schneider joined the university as an area coordinator. He arrived from Warner Pacific College, where he was director of leadership development and student programs the past three years. He earned a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from Oregon State University in 2001 and a bachelor’s degree in applied science from George Fox in 2000. He lives in Newberg with wife Laura and attends Imago Dei Community in Portland.
Kari Day joined the School of Management as an assistant professor of accounting on a half-time basis. She is a practicing CPA and has worked as an auditor with The WEL Group of Portland and with BKD in Oklahoma. She also has taught accounting at Pacific University and Warner Pacific University, and was the lead accounting instructor at Heald College in Portland. Kari earned master’s and bachelor’s degrees in accounting from Oklahoma City University and now lives in West Linn. She attends Life Change Christian Center in northeast Portland.
Marcella Gowan joined the nursing department as an assistant professor of nursing. Marcella has served as a missionary nurse-midwife for 20 years. She has taught in several countries and at many levels, working with foot doctors, traditional birth attendants, and university and post-graduate students. Marcella received a master of public health degree from Loma Linda University in 1985, a bachelor of science in nursing from Walla Walla College in 1983, and a post graduate certificate in nurse midwifery from the Frontier School of Midwifery and Family Nursing in 1992. She lives in Portland with husband Robert and their children Benjamin, Timira, Jack, and Negesti. They attend the west side campus of City Bible Church.
After 25 years at George Fox, Ginger Hoover (Custodial Services) is retiring at the end of September. A going-away reception is scheduled for 3 p.m. Friday, Sept. 28, in the Stevens Center atrium. Ginger plans to move from Tualatin to Tigard, spend time with family, and visit friends and family across the country.
Joel Hoffman (Custodial Services) is leaving George Fox at the end of September to move to Malawi, where he will be work on community development projects through the Word of Life organization.
Paul Anderson (Religious Studies) presented on the topic “The Mission of the Christ-Centered Quaker College†at Malone College, Barclay College, and Friends University Sept. 9-12, in conjunction with book-signing events celebrating the publication of Founded by Friends; The Quaker Heritage of Fifteen American Colleges and Universities (Scarecrow Press). His book, The Fourth Gospel and the Quest for Jesus (T&T Clark) has just been re-printed in paperback form, and Paul contributed the guest editorial on the non-violent way of Jesus to the August 2007 issue of The Friends Voice.
Mike Foster (Engineering) and wife Luann welcomed their first child, Noah Bradley, on Aug. 29 at Newberg Hospital. The baby weighed 7 pounds, 12 ounces and was 21 inches long.
An article co-written by Deb Drecnik Worden (Management) was referenced in a Sept. 8 TwinCities.com story about Ameriprise Financial’s efforts to target Gen X investors. TwinCities.com is the online version of the Pioneer Press, a daily newspaper in St. Paul, Minn. The article stated: “Gen Xers have been largely ignored by financial services companies because of their lower income and limited assets, according to a 2003 article in the Journal of Financial Planning by Diane Schooley of Boise State University and Debra Drecnik Worden of George Fox University. Their article, based on the 1998 Survey of Consumer Finances sponsored by the Federal Reserve’s Board of Governors, also found that while Gen Xers want to be informed, they have a low level of trust and a great deal of skepticism.â€
