Jim Foster (Provost) was quoted in the Monday, Oct. 8, issue of the Washington Post, in an article, “Charting Courses to Make Subjects Click,” that discussed the unconventional courses that engage students in the learning process better than traditionally conceived classes. “It might seem silly to those outside academia that a student can take ‘Baseball in American History’ instead of ‘History of the U.S.,’” Jim says. “But history is a methodology, not just content, and the methods of historians can be learned in the baseball course.”

A course titled “Detective Fiction” isn’t exactly the equivalent of “British Literature to 1660,” but literary criticism is taught in both courses, and that may be the “most important teaching goal, more important than specific content,” he said.

Rick Muthiah (Center for Teaching and Learning) and his wife, Beth, welcomed their fourth child, Esther Priyanka Allison, at 3:31 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 26. The baby was 7 pounds, 3 ounces and was 19.5 inches long. She joins older brothers Caleb, Corban, and Malachi.

The Office of Multicultural Services and the Center for Teaching and Learning are hosting a brown-bag lunch discussion on diversity in the classroom from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 17, in the Bruin Den Annex. The sessions will continue to meet every other week.

Multicultural Services staff will be available to answer questions relative to diversity in and out of the classroom. There is not a set agenda, but a relaxed atmosphere of discussion. Resources will be provided.

Vickie Kilber, mother of Patrick Kibler, a student killed by a drunk driver in 2004, will visit campus for the Student Life-sponsored “Your Dash – What Are You Doing With It?” alcohol-awareness week event at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 17, in Hoover 105.

Those in attendance will receive gift certificates for a free meal at Wendy’s.

All students, faculty and staff interested in getting a flu shot are welcome to schedule one through the university’s Health and Counseling Center. The center’s flu clinic will be open from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 25, and from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 31.

The Health and Counseling Center is located in the Woodward House on campus. Call the center at ext. 2340 for more information or to make an appointment.

After the squirrel sabotaged campus on Saturday, KFOX became one of the casualties. The scheduled programming was unable to be aired. (Yes, we know you missed the Monday morning edition of the John and Jere Show.)

However, thanks to the efforts of Josh Nauman, Jared Ocker and Jim Fleming, KFOX is back on the air.

Monday’s shows should continue on schedule.

The Master of Arts in Teaching program at George Fox is offered on a full time and part time basis and results in both a teaching license and master’s degree.

Ian Symmonds of Ian Symmonds and Associates, Inc. will visit the Newberg campus on Monday, Oct. 15, to conduct open sessions with all staff and administrators and host small, informal focus groups with faculty and students.

Ian Symmonds and Associates is a consulting firm that specializes in analysis-based strategic marketing and planning for a nationwide client base of independent schools, colleges, universities, and nonprofits. President Robin Baker and the board of trustees selected the firm to guide the university through a strategic planning process to prepare the university for the future.

For your convenience, two sessions will be held for all staff and administrators. These 45-minute sessions will address strategic issues facing the university, hopeful outcomes of the planning process, and key distinctive elements of the institution. These open sessions are designed to give everyone a voice and opportunity to contribute to the planning process. Open sessions for all staff and administrators are scheduled for the following times in Wood-Mar Auditorium:

8:30 – 9:15 a.m.

9:15 – 10 a.m.

All staff and administrators are encouraged to attend one of the sessions.

Faculty and student sessions:

Small focus groups have also been scheduled for both faculty and students on Monday; those participants have received a schedule for times and locations. An open session for all faculty and future focus groups will be scheduled at a later date by Symmonds and Associates.

Faculty, staff, and students are all represented on the Strategic Planning Steering Committee, and the whole of the university will be more engaged with planning during the winter and spring.

The School of Professional Studies is sponsoring “Spiritual Emphasis Week” this week. Each night there will be a short devotional, music, and refreshments.

Come join in! 7:30-8:30 p.m. in the south building lobby.

The Newberg campus will take its mid-semester holiday on Friday, Oct. 12. No classes will be held, and the university’s offices, bookstore, switchboard, and library will be closed. The Portland and Boise sites will remain open.
