The campus community is welcome to enjoy engineering’s “Wobble Off” from 2 to 4 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 6, in the Ron Gregory Atrium. The event is a demonstration of freshmen engineering students’ first project – a variety of oscillating steam/air-operated engines. The event highlights the students’ first year studies in engineering design, solid modeling, and machining, and showcases the creative and impressive results of their design/build projects.

The students’ engines will compete in a variety of categories, including maximum speed, minimum vibration, maximum coast, cost efficiency, and creativity/craftsmanship.

Tim Timmerman (Visual Art) will introduce art students showcasing their work at a luncheon sponsored by the George Fox University Auxiliary at noon on Friday, Dec. 7, in the Cap and Gown Room.

The event is open to all employees for $7. Reservations are required and can be made by calling Nancy Lamm at 503-537-2321 or Louise Clarkson at 503-538-2850.

Come one, come all!

To the Third Annual Wassail Party on Thursday Dec. 6, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. in the Portland Center South Lobby.

Wassail will be served hot, and cookies, snacks, and goodies will be available as well, along with group caroling throughout the day.

Please be sure to bring a plate of yummy treats to share.

Multicultural Services is hosting a film series next semester, and director Burel Ford would like your input on other possibilities for the series. Below is the current listing of dates and movies to be shown. Films begin at 7 p.m. in EHS 102 on the Newberg campus. Faculty members are encouraged to consider offering extra credit for attendance or implementing the films into curriculum.

All students, faculty, and employees are invited to a language lab open house from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 30, in Minthorn 100. Swing by and see our new location, now on the first floor of Minthorn Hall. Hot tea and cookies will be provided.

Many people have been asking why the flag has been flying at half-staff for the past week. This is in memory of Cara Moran, the George Fox student killed in last week’s tragic automobile accident. Her funeral in Chandler, Ariz., is Wednesday, Nov. 28, and the university will fly the flag at half-staff through that day. Please continue to pray for Cara’s family and friends during this difficult time.

George Fox is investing in Yamhill County by partnering with the Mid-Willamette Valley United Way in a workplace campaign from now through Dec. 15, 2007.

Within the next few days, you will receive a letter from President Robin Baker regarding your opportunity for involvement in a Community Care Fund that will directly benefit local nonprofit organizations.

Every donor has the opportunity to designate their dollars for an impact area, or for a specific organization.

Molly Hickok joined Health and Counseling Services this month as an administrative assistant. She worked previously at Acumen Financial Group Services of Wilsonville, where she was an administrative assistant the past two years. Before that, she held the same position at Wilsonville Christian Academy for eight years. Molly earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Portland State University in 1987. She lives in Sherwood with her husband Todd and two of her sons, Brennan and Sam. Her oldest son, Nathan, is a freshman at Corban College. She attends Countryside Community Church in Sherwood.

Manfred Tschan (Health and Human Performance) announced his resignation as head coach of the university’s men’s soccer team. Manfred was with the program 20 years – 19 of them as head coach. He will remain as an assistant professor of health and human performance the rest of the academic year, then join Newberg-based Action Inc., a manufacturer of mechanical sorters, conveyors, and other machinery.

Matt McDonough (Admissions) left the university earlier this month.

Daniel Sweeney (Counseling), director of the university’s Northwest Center for Play Therapy Studies, was named national president-elect of the Association for Play Therapy during its October conference in Hollywood, Calif. APT is a national professional society formed to advance the field of play therapy. It sponsors research, training, and credentialing programs to assist the professional development of its more than 5,000 member psychologists, social workers, counselors, and marriage and family therapists in approximately 25 nations.

For those thinking of studying abroad next academic year, there will be another program choice.  The location is Cape Town, South Africa, one of the most beautiful cities in the world, in a country that has made great strides in overcoming the centuries of suffering under the apartheid system of racism. 

The courses will concentrate on reconciliation, focusing particularly on the South African reconciliation process which began in 1990 and continues today.  The program is located at Cornerstone Christian College and credit will be granted through Bethel University in Minnesota.
