George Fox’s Newberg, Portland, Boise, Redmond, and Salem sites will close for the Christmas holiday Monday, Dec. 24, through Wednesday, Dec. 26. Thursday and Friday, Dec. 27-28, are not paid holidays, so those taking them off need to use vacation time.

The university also will close for the New Year’s holiday Monday, Dec. 31, and Tuesday, Jan. 1. Undergraduate classes resume Monday, Jan. 7, while some graduate programs resume classes the first week of January. For Newberg and Portland library hours during the holiday break, visit library.georgefox.edu.

As of Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2008 the cost for renting university vans will be increased to $.50 per mile.

Miller Gymnasium will be completely closed from Thursday 12/20-Wednesday 12/26 for painting.

The University Bookstore will host a price-matching program during the first week of classes, Jan. 7-11. Price matching is held at the textbook annex in the basement of the library. Here are the details:

Price-Match Program Guidelines

• Price-matching program runs during the first week of each semester only

• The online price must include shipping cost

• Book must be in stock and state they are available for shipment

• ISBN’s must match (we can only match a price on identical items)

• Pricing can only be compared new to new and used to used. Used online prices cannot be compared with new bookstore prices.

• The store only can match pricing with online stores, not clubs like Books-a-Million or auction sites like eBay or half.com

• Only United States-based online stores

The University Store will be receiving large shipments of textbooks during the next three weeks. Please do not park in the library loading dock or along the service road (between the tennis courts and Edwards dorm), as trucks need the space to back into the dock. We are sometimes charged extra fees if trucks are not able to use the loading dock or are delayed by us having to find drivers to move their vehicles. Thanks for your help with this during our busy time.

Graduate students leave a lasting impact on their communities by completing Service Learning Projects during their MBA and MAOL programs. George Fox students have worked with more than 70 local nonprofit organizations and the list continues to grow. Final presentations to the organizations are now complete and the projects have been outstanding. Members of the groups are often moved beyond words at the depth and scope of the work completed. One group has been asked to present their findings to the Idaho Legislature in the New Year. Below is a brief overview of the projects completed by the M10 cohort.

Advocates for Inclusion: Students assisted the organization in clarification of their identity by establishing a mission, vision, and values statements. They also developed a marketing plan to identify potential sponsors and provided recommendations for increasing the awareness of the organization.

St. Alphonsus Regional Medical Center: Students performed a nursing recruiting strategy research project. Research included local students graduating in the field of nursing, Canadian nursing students, and a selected group of Schools of Nursing. Students made recommendations as to how St. Alphonsus can recruit and keep quality nurses.

Community Alzheimer’s Respite and Enrichment (C.A.R.E. Club): Students performed a comprehensive analysis of the organization’s budget, staffing and benefits, industry comparison, and board of directors. A Standard Operating Procedures and CARE Club promotional PowerPoint was crafted and delivered for marketing and training purposes.

Idaho Community Review: Students reviewed the current practices and business model of the Idaho Community Review organization to enhance the post review process for follow-up. The Idaho Community Review strengthens rural Idaho by connecting communities with professionals who can assist in specified areas to provide communities with analysis and feedback for improvement opportunities.

3. Discontinue the use of the activity type “Journal.” Instead, create Online Text Assignments to replace all old Journal activities. Journals have been made obsolete by Moodle and are painfully slow in the current version. We will be discontinuing their use on January 14.

4. Request new courses from the Service Desk.

The Center for Teaching and Learning is offering an introductory FoxTALE workshop on Thursday, January 3, 9am – noon, in the CAI Lab, third floor of Stevens. Open lab time is also offered January 3, 1 – 4pm, in the CAI Lab. Please RSVP to Sheila Abercrombie if you would like to attend the morning class.

There will be no towel service in the Fitness Center From Friday 12/21 thru 1/7/08.  We do, however, have new anti-bacterial towels in dispensers to wipe down the equipment.  If you want a towel for your personal use you’ll need to bring one with you.  Thank you.

The Bruin Den will be open through Thursday, Dec. 20, from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The grill will close at 1 p.m. each day.

The Bruin Den will close on Friday, Dec. 21, and will reopen on Wednesday, Jan. 2, at 9:30 a.m. Both the Bruin Den and Villa Cafe will resume regular schedules on Jan. 7.

A senior capstone business project, Clean Sweep, is available for employees and students. The cleaning service will arrive with two crew members and all supplies needed to clean your home. The rate for the two-person cleaning team is $30 an hour. Services will include but are not limited to dusting, vacuuming, mopping, cleaning showers, cleaning toilets, wiping counters, dusting cobwebs, emptying trash bins, cleaning appliances, and cleaning windows. Customize the cleaning you want for your home.

If you are a dependent student planning to marry in 2008 and have not yet completed your bachelor’s degree, please make an appointment with your Financial Aid Counselor before you file your FAFSA.  She will help you determine when it is best for you to file. 

Please be aware that you cannot change your dependency status due to getting married so it is important to take a few minutes in Student Financial Services to be able to make an informed decision.
