In case students ask, Bon Appetit recently made a change with its serving lines at lunch to increase efficiency and speed up the lines.

Based upon the suggestions of approximately 50 business students, the same menu selections are now available on both serving lines without reducing the number of selections and variety. The feedback has been positive thus far; however, there is a perception that the number of menu choices have been reduced. Please be assured the variety and selection have not changed whatsoever, and we’re still preparing the same number of choices as before.

Many thanks to those who have given us their feedback. We’re now investigating the feasibility of doing the same at dinner. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Space is still available for employees and students interested in attending this Saturday’s Kaleo conference, featuring Wes Davis, pastor of Newlife Church in Silverdale, Wash. The event, designed to provide training for those involved with youth ministry, will draw church groups and individuals from throughout the region. It is scheduled from 8:30 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. in Bauman Auditorium.

“Courageous Leadership” is this year’s theme. In addition to Davis, who will speak on “Dare to Lead” and “Dare to Redeem,” breakout sessions led by several guest speakers will cover 16 topics, including “Avoiding burnout,” “Building a team,” “Mentoring young women,” “Prolonged adolescence,” “Postmodern evangelism,” and “Discipling a godly student living in an ungodly home.” Leading worship will be Mike Hohnholz, who leads a Sunday night service at Beaverton Foursquare Church.

The conference is free for George Fox undergraduate students. Employees and George Fox graduate students pay $25 per person. The price includes a lunch.

Tickets are $10 for students with a meal plan and $12 for students not on the meal plan.

Career Services is teaming up with the religion and Christian ministries departments to host a seminary fair from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 26, in the Hoover Academic Building on the Newberg campus. The Chehalem Symphony Orchestra will perform a free concert at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 19, in Bauman Auditorium. The orchestra, consisting of George Fox students, faculty, and residents of the greater Portland area, will play Mendelssohn’s “Sinfonia #10,” Dvorak’s “Serenade Op. 44,” and the famous “Brahms Hungarian Dances Nos. 5, 6, and 7.”

Later this week, on Thursday, Feb. 21, the university will host a Chamber Concert featuring the Chamber Singers, Trumpet Ensemble, Flute Ensemble, Clarinet Quartet, String Quartet, String Ensemble, and Early Music Ensemble.  It begins at 7:30 p.m. and also takes place in Bauman Auditorium.

Graduate Department of Counseling students in COUN/MFT 582 Research and Evaluation are working with Michelle J. Cox (Counseling) to investigate baby boomers’ images of God, attachment styles, spiritual transcendence, and emotional well-being.

Student researchers are looking for volunteers born between 1946 and 1964 to complete a 45-minute survey. Anyone willing to participate is asked to contact Michelle via e-mail at mcox@georgefox.edu for more information about the study and when data collection will begin.

The deadline for the Campus Music Project’s Artwork Album Cover Contest has been extended to next Sunday, February 24 at midnight.

A Columbia Records marketing representative will be looking at ALL of the artwork submissions! The winner and anyone they are interested in, will be contacted by Columbia Records. Come participate in this amazing opportuniy and possibly do work for Columbia.

A farewell reception for Jules Glanzer (Seminary) is scheduled from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 21, in the main lobby of the Portland Center. Jules is leaving to serve as president of his alma mater, Tabor College in Kansas.

Mu Kappa is a fraternal organization for third culture kids. It is sponsored by missionary kids FOR missionary kids or others who grew up in a culture not their own.

The purpose of this group is to help embrace the past while building a foundation for the future.

For the first time, GFU will have a Mu Kappa chapter on campus.

The first gathering will be held on Thursday, February 21 at 8 pm in the Moore House (or commuter lounge).

Food and beverages will be provided.

George Fox students and the Office of Student Life are collecting money to help students at Union University in Jackson, Tenn. This sister Council for Christian Colleges and Universities institution was hit hard by a series of tornadoes last week. They have posted a YouTube video at youtube.com/watch?v=3O-IiHCrsK8.

The damage is incredible. It is amazing and a miracle of God that there were no lives lost (though many injuries). All the buildings except one were hit by the storm and many are beyond repair.

Our goal is to raise money that will be used to buy gift cards that will be given directly to Union University students (through their Student Life department) who lost everything in the storm (far more than insurance will cover). Some George Fox employees expressed an interest in participating. We will collect money in our office on the third floor of the Stevens Center through Tuesday, Feb. 19, and the university’s Associated Student Community (ASC) will be matching the gifts.

There is still time for faculty to express an interest in being part of our faculty exchange program with Wuhan University of Technology in China. This involves spending up to a month at Wuhan in May or June, teaching courses in your field and learning about the culture.

Our visiting faculty member from Wuhan, Liu Shengmin, could be helpful in knowing more about the city, the university, and the expectations of visiting faculty members. Faculty members pay for their own travel and Wuhan provides accommodations and some of the meals.

Through the support of the Marshall Christenson Foundation, George Fox is currently hosting a visiting faculty member from Kazakhstan. Her month-long stay will soon be ending, but we will be hosting two more professors, these from the Kiev National Linguistic University in Ukraine. They both teach English, so they will have no trouble communicating. One is a man and the other a woman.

They will be here from Feb. 26 through March 26. Their goal is to learn about our teaching strategies in English literature and the English language, so they will be visiting several classes. They also will want to participate in various university and community activities during their time here.

A bioethics discussion, “Abortion and Breast Cancer, the Missing Link Found,” with Dr. Clem Persaud, PhD, a professor of biotechnology, is scheduled from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 20, in Hoover 105.

Come hear one of the world’s leading biotechnology experts discuss relevant topics of faith and science. Dr. Persaud is a retired professor of biotechnology from Canadore College, Ontario.  He travels extensively leading bioethics discussions on various topics such as stem cells, embryo research, and cloning.
