Elements from each culture are incorporated into the life experience, but the sense of belonging is in relationship to others of similar experience.”

George Fox and Providence Newberg Medical Center will host a public health forum featuring Dr. David Barker – a physician and researcher who discovered the relationship between birth weight and the risk of coronary heart disease – from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 21, in Wood-Mar Auditorium.

Barker, a physician and professor of clinical epidemiology at the University of Southampton in England and a professor in the Department of Medicine and the Heart Research Center at Oregon Health and Science University, will speak on “Halting the Epidemic of Diabetes and Heart Disease.”

The forum is free and open to the public. In addition to seating in Wood-Mar Auditorium, a live feed of the presentation will be available in Hoover 105.

Barker, MD, PhD, is internationally renowned for what was named the “Barker Hypothesis” by the British Medical Journal in 1995. In 1989, with University of Southampton colleagues, he showed for the first time that people who had low birth weight are at greater risk of developing coronary heart disease. His theory is now widely accepted in the medical community.

ater studies he conducted showed that low birth weight also is associated with an increased risk of high blood pressure, stroke, and Type 2 diabetes. In all, Barker has published more than 200 papers and written or edited five books about the developmental origins of chronic disease.

His Oregon connection began in 2003, when he joined the faculty at the Heart Research Center at OHSU to study how nutrition and growth before birth and during early childhood alter the development of the heart. He is a research partner with Dr. Kent Thornburg, a member of the George Fox Board of Trustees and a 1967 George Fox graduate. Thornburg helped arrange the forum.

Professional publication is an increasingly important, but sometimes intimidating, responsibility of university faculty. David Sherwood (Social Work), editor of the journal Social Work & Christianity for 25 years, will lead a Faculty Teaching Forum workshop on writing for publication from noon to 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 20, in the Executive Dining Room.

Participants will review issues such as the types of articles that might be appropriate, selection of journals for submission, writing form and style, the peer review process, using editorial feedback, and appropriate ethics. Participants also will discuss their ideas and questions about writing and publication.

Employees are invited to attend an all-campus meeting from 4 to 5 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 21, in Hoover 105. Clark Campbell (Psychology) was elected 2008 chair of the Committee on Rural Health of the American Psychological Association. The committee, which meets three times a year in Washington, D.C., is responsible for helping to meet the mental health needs of rural residents and rural practicing psychologists. Clark also had a paper, “Integrating Christianity Across the Supervisory Process,” published in a recent issue of The Journal of Psychology and Christianity.

Paul Anderson’s (Religious Studies) essay, “Cadbury, Henry J. (1883-1974),” appeared in the Dictionary of Major Biblical Interpreters (Intervarsity), and his coedited volume, John, Jesus, and History; Critical Assessments of Critical Views, Vol. 1, has appeared in hardback in Europe (E.J. Brill).

Also, Paul’s The Fourth Gospel and the Quest for Jesus is featured on the T&T Clark Blog site (http://tandtclark.typepad.com/ttc/2008/01/the-fourth-gosp.html) as a bestselling title from the LNTS series and the first (of more than 400 books) to appear in paperback. It is endorsed by James M. Robinson and Martin Hengel. The book will be reviewed at the national SBL meetings in November, and a four-fold review and author’s response will be published online and in print in The Journal of Greco-Roman Christianity and Judaism.
