The Academic Resource Center (ARC) has started the hiring process for the 2008-09 academic year.

The center is looking for students who are encouraging, organized, solid writers, and clear communicators. If you know a student who fits that description, please send his or her name to Polly Peterson at popeters@georgefox.edu or ext. 2602.

Do your students need to get more familiar with Turabian style formatting? Do you wish your students demonstrated more skill in proper footnote use? If so, encourage them to attend the Turabian Style Workshop, hosted by Academic Resource Center consultants Kohleun Adamson and Dan Bennett.

Thw workshop is scheduled for 6 p.m. Tuesday, March 11, in EHS 102.

The inauguration of Robin Baker as the 12th president of George Fox University is this Thursday and Friday, March 6-7. This event marks a significant milestone in the life of the university and a tremendous opportunity for the entire community to come together in celebration. We hope that you will participate in the events of Robin’s inauguration, as they are designed for the entire George Fox family, particularly students and employees.

Processional Information (for faculty)
All faculty, unless communicated with appropriate dean, will be processing in full academic regalia at the start of the installation ceremony at 4 p.m. on March 6. Faculty will gather in the Bauman Auditorium Greenroom starting at 3:30 p.m. and should be in regalia and ready to begin the processional at 3:45 p.m. The faculty processional will proceed down both center aisles. Faculty will be seated in the floor seats of the auditorium, not on stage. Mark Weinert will serve as faculty marshal.

Class Cancellations
All traditional undergraduate classes (including athletics) on the Newberg campus starting between 3:40 and 6 p.m. will be cancelled on Thursday, March 6, in order to allow students to attend and faculty to participate in the installation ceremony processional. Evening classes will resume at 7 p.m.

Changes to the class schedules for graduate and degree-completion classes in Newberg, Portland, and Salem are at the discretion of the individual departments. Faculty: please speak with your department head if you are uncertain of your situation and communicate appropriate class cancellations to your students.

Office Closures
All offices on the Newberg campus may choose to close at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 6, in order for employees to attend the installation ceremony and at 10:40 a.m. on Friday, March 7, in order for employees to attend the inaugural worship service. Offices should be open regular business hours during the rest of the inaugural schedule.

The URL for the live streaming of the inauguration events is http://stream.georgefox.edu/live/inauguration.sdp. Three events will be webcast: the installation ceremony, the inaugural worship service, and the symposium.

Paul Marshall, author of more than 20 books on religion and politics, will give a lecture titled “Understanding Radical Islam” at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 11, in Hoover 105 on the Newberg campus.

Marshall is considered an expert on religious freedom and international politics, religion and politics, the Christian understanding of politics, and Islam and human rights.

In addition to the public lecture, Marshall will speak on “The Worldwide Church in the New Millennium” in Monday’s 10:40 a.m. chapel service in Bauman Auditorium. He also will speak that afternoon at 4:40 and 7 p.m. in a senior capstone class in Hoover 105 as part of a class lecture series titled “Liberal Arts: Critical Issues.”

Marshall is the author of more than 20 books on religion and politics, including Radical Islam’s Rules: The Worldwide Spread of Extreme Sharia Law (2005), The Rise of Hindu Extremism (2003), God and the Constitution (2002), The Talibanization of Nigeria (2002), Massacre at the Millennium (2001), and the best-selling, award-winning survey of religious persecution worldwide Their Blood Cries Out (1997).

The university’s library will be closed on Thursday, March 6, from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. for the inauguration of President Robin Baker.

The library will reopen at 5:30 p.m. and remain open until 11 p.m.

Barbara (Barbi) Doran has moved from temporary to permanent status as the university’s switchboard operator. She has served as a temporary employee since March. She and her husband, Mike, have co-owned Doran Automotive in Newberg since 1989, where she has worked as an office manager, supervisor, and bookkeeper, among other duties. Barbi attended George Fox in the mid-1980s. She and Mike live in Newberg and have three children: Bradley (15), Tyler (13) and Lindsey (11). The family attends Newberg Foursquare Church.

Jules Glanzer’s (Seminary) final day as dean of the seminary was Feb. 15. After six years at George Fox, he is returning to his alma mater, Tabor College in Hillsboro, Kan., to serve as president.

Gloria Foltz (Enrollment Services) is leaving George Fox after 11 1/2 years of service to the university. Her final day will be March 10. She is leaving to manage her husband’s dental practice in McMinnville.

Sandy Chambers, an administrative assistant at the Portland Center, left George Fox on Feb. 28. She plans to finish current studies at Portland Community College and then enroll in that school’s radiology program.

Chris Csergei (Portland Center Bookstore) left George Fox in February to move to California with his family.

Dale Seipp (Enrollment Services) was hired as vice president for Enrollment Services after serving in the position on an interim basis since last summer.

Karlyn Fleming (Campus Ministries) is the new executive assistant to the provost. She will report to Jim Foster until the new provost, Patrick Allen, arrives.

Al Zimmerman (Planned Giving) spoke to the Willamette Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors in Albany at its annual conference Feb. 20. His topic was “Life Insurance in Charitable Giving.” He made a similar presentation to the Northwest Planned Giving Roundtable.

Terry Huffman (Education) published a book, American Indian Higher Educational Experiences: Cultural Visions and Personal Journeys (Peter Lang Publishing). He also presented a paper in February, “Family Relation Patterns among Interracial Families,” with colleague Ron Ferguson at the annual American Association of Behavioral and Social Sciences Conference in Las Vegas.

Terry also learned that an article he and Ferguson published last year in Great Plains Research, “Evaluation of the College Experience among American Indian Upperclassmen,” has been nominated for the Leslie Hewes Award. The award is presented annually by the Center for Great Plains Studies at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln for the best social science journal article related to the Great Plains region.

Bruce Strom and Rae Casey (School of Professional Studies) presented “Hybrid Learning: A Model and Key Considerations for Development” at the Midwest Scholars Conference at Indiana Wesleyan University on Feb. 22. Bruce also wrote an article, “Small Business Organization and Taxation Issues,” for the Small Business Advisor section of the Small Business Development Center’s (Boise Chamber of Commerce) March newsletter. Another article he wrote, “Learn About Trends in Small Business Development,” appeared in the Feb. 20 edition of the Idaho Press-Tribune.

Rhett Luedtke (Performing Arts) directed Neil LaBute’s new play, Fat Pig, at Salem Repertory Theatre, Salem’s only professional theatre, in February. Both The Statesman Journal and The Salem Monthly gave the show excellent reviews for direction and the quality of ensemble acting throughout the show.

Jim Steele (Management) presented a paper, “Professional Identity and Professionals’ Workplace Learning: A Theoretical Proposal,” at the Academy of Human Resource Development 2008 International Research Conference in the Americas. The conference took place in Panama City, Fla., Feb. 21-24. Jim also served as a symposium chair at the event.

Nate McIntyre (Admissions) and his wife Kim welcomed their second child, Calum Michael, who was born at 12:16 a.m. Feb. 19 at St. Vincent Hospital in Portland. The baby weighed 7 pounds and was 20 1/2 inches long. He joins a 3-year-old brother, Eli.
