Due to an illness, the Wheeler Sports Center gym floor refinishing project will not be completed in the scheduled time and the gym will remain closed through Thursday, June 12. If the work gets finished before that date, a notification will go out. Thank you for your patience.

Plant Services

You are invited to help Plant Services restore the ecosystem structure and function of Hess Creek Canyon, which includes the establishment of native plant communities. The work will take place Wednesdays from 10:15 a.m. to 3 p.m. through the summer and will mostly involve the removal of invasive plants, mainly ivy. Are you willing to get involved in making a difference in Myanmar? On May 3, cyclone Nargis hit the country, killing more than 34,000 people, devastating the Irrawaddy Delta, and destroying Myanmar’s rice crop. Another 1 million people may starve in the next few months if they do not receive rice seeds by the end of June to replant their fields and feed their families.

I have started a project to provide salt-resistant rice seeds to the people of the Irrawaddy Delta. One pound of rice seed costs about $15 and will produce enough rice to feed one person in Myanmar for about six months. One-hundred percent of any donation you can make will go toward purchasing the seeds.

You can donate to the Myanmar Rice Seed project online at nmsi.org/donate.aspx. (Enter your information and designate your gift to “Rice Seed – Myanmar”). New Mission Systems International is a registered U.S. nonprofit, Christian charitable organization and a member of the Evangelical Council for Financial Accountability.

Tom and Michele Johnson are moving their belongings to Coupeville, Wash., on Thursday, June 12, and wish to hire three students to help load the truck starting at 4 p.m. In the event students work until 5 p.m., they would like to start loading at 5:15 p.m. They estimate it will take less than three hours, and there are no appliances. The Portland Center Library will be closed Friday, June 6, noon to 1:15 p.m. to allow the staff to attend a departmental function.  The Information Commons (Computer Lab) will remain open.

Employees are invited to attend an all-community meeting from 4 to 5 p.m. Thursday, June 12, in Hoover 105. The meeting will provide employees an opportunity to receive campus updates. Your participation is strongly encouraged.

The gym floors in the Wheeler Sports Center will undergo refinishing work June 2-8. The gym will be closed during that time and reopen on Monday, June 9.

Thespians interested in showcasing their acting skills this summer are invited to take part in a community production of Greek comic playwright Aristophanes’ The Birds, updated for 2008 with references to presidential politics, Oregon, etc.

The play will be performed at the university’s amphitheater Aug. 21-23. According to organizers, the theme of the production is “The birds take over the world!” A group of George Fox alumni are spearheading the project.

Doors are open during regular summer hours,  6 to 8 a.m., 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., and 4 to 7 p.m.

The library will be closed Sat. May 24.

As previously announced, the campus will also be closed on Monday, May 26.

The university’s offices will close Monday, May 26, to observe Memorial Day.

The university’s Salem site will host an open house from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, May 29, at its new location in the Capitol City Business Center, 4600 25th Ave. N.E., Suite 150. The center is located in the former State Farm Insurance building in Salem. Refreshments will be served following a ribbon-cutting ceremony and a few words from administrators.

The site offers a Master of Arts in Teaching degree, an MAT Plus ESOL endorsement, and an MAT Plus Reading endorsement. Also offered are EDFL administrative licensure courses, doctorate of education courses, and master of education courses.

In addition, the site features the masters in counseling program, most courses for the masters in marriage and family therapy program, and some courses for the masters in school counseling degree.

Finally, School of Professional Studies programs offered in Salem are bachelor’s degrees in management and organizational leadership and social and behavioral studies.
