The city of Newberg will be closing Fulton Street in the coming week to do crosswalk and speed table work in the area across from the Friendsview Retirement Center. Please plan accordingly.

The Portland Center Library is a fantastic resource for our employees and students alike. The rows of books and the many magazines, newspapers and journals that they provide for us is amazing! We want to continue to support this resource in every way we can.

Recently, however, the library staff has discovered that several magazines and a newspaper are disappearing off the racks. Specifically these publications are:

• Time
  
• US News
• Entertainment
  
• The Wall Street Journal

If you have accidentally picked up these magazines or have taken them to read, please return them to the library so that the other students and employees can enjoy them as well. In this way, we are all being good stewards of what God has blessed us with.

The copiers at the Portland Center have been updated to reflect the new account codes for PeopleSoft.

HR is recruiting both internally and externally to fill an executive assistant I (pay range 7) vacancy in the Office of Academic Affairs. Andrea Byerley, who had held this position, is transferring to the registrar’s office to work as an enrollment counselor.

The incumbent of this position will work with Karlyn Fleming and Patrick Allen, providing support to the AAO, as well as with/for Hank Helsabeck, dean of the School of Arts and Sciences. We would like to invite you to participate in George Fox University’s 10th annual Serve Day celebration.  On September 10, 2008, the Newberg campus will shut down. Newberg Employees and undergrad students go out into the surrounding areas to serve at non-profit organizations, homes and churches. This year we have too many requests for volunteers and are unable to meet all of the needs. We need your help! With the approval of your supervisor we would gladly assign you to a serve site. If you are interested in being a volunteer on Serve Day or need more information please write Kayin Griffith, Serve Day Coordinator, at serveday@georgefox.edu.

We are quickly approaching the closing of our books for fiscal year 07-08.  Each year at this time we notify you of the cut-off date for anything that needs to be charged in last year.  That cut-off date for this year is July 23, 2008.  After that time, any costs associated with fiscal year 07-08 will have to go into your fiscal year 08-09 budget.

1.    Please forward any invoices to Financial Affairs for goods and/or services that were received prior to July 1, 2008.
2.    Please review your 2007-2008 budget report and notify Financial Affairs if there are any outstanding Purchase orders for goods and/or services that were not received prior to July 1 so they can be disencumbered.

Please continue to pray for us as we are aggressively coming up to speed on the new PeopleSoft systems, while trying keeping up with the year-end closing and the preparation for our annual audit.

Security Services, in cooperation with the police departments of Newberg and Dundee, is offering free bicycle registration at the security office. Starting Monday, July 21, security will assist you in registering your bike, and your information will be transfered to the Newberg Police Department for its records. This is a free service, so please take advantage before the school year rush.

Employees are invited to attend all-community strategic planning sessions from 1 to 3:30 p.m. Monday, July 14, in Hoover 105.

The sessions will include strategic planning updates from the chairs of the strategic planning work groups. The meeting will begin in Hoover 105 and then break out into rotating sessions in specified Hoover classrooms. Your participation is strongly encouraged.

The main file and print server will be unavailable on Saturday, July 12.

Serve Day organizers need at least 10 more team leaders to lead groups of volunteers for Serve Day on Wednesday, Sept. 10.

A team leader’s responsibilities:

• Attend a meeting on Sept. 3 from 4 to 5 p.m. to receive information about site
• Contact both site and RA prior to Serve Day and make sure they are aware of all details
• Supervise volunteers on Serve Day, helping make sure communication happens between site rep and team. Also, helping make sure that the team has what it needs and is comfortable with tasks.

Please join us Wednesday, July 16 at 1 p.m. in the Duke Atrium of the Stevens Center for a farewell gathering for Dana Miller, chief advancement officer at George Fox University for 11 years. Dana is joining the M.J. Murdock Charitable Trust in Vancouver, Wash., as senior program director for grant programs.

Miller has been a member of the senior leadership for three George Fox presidents. In 2002, Miller was promoted to vice president for marketing and advancement with responsibility for all external university functions, including admissions, marketing and university relations.

It’s Genesis time again. Please use alternate parking lots such as Bauman and Pennington and leave the Stevens and Hoover lots open for our guests this Thursday and Friday. We appreciate all of you making the effort to make our new students and their families feel welcome.

Patrick Allen, a chief academic officer at three universities over the last two decades, began as provost of George Fox on July 1. He most recently served as provost at Southern Nazarene University in Bethany, Okla., where he was responsible for all day-to-day campus operations since 2005. Before that, he worked 10 years as provost and chief academic officer at Point Loma Nazarene University in San Diego. He also has served as vice president for academic affairs at Anderson University in Indiana and as dean of the School of Business and Lloyd Pickrell Distinguished Professor of Management at Friends University in Wichita, Kan. Patrick earned a doctorate in higher education from the University of Oklahoma and holds master’s degrees in management (Southern Nazarene University) and liberal arts (Southern Methodist University). He also earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Olivet Nazarene University. Patrick and his wife Lori have moved to Newberg.

Linda Samek, provost of Corban College in Salem since 2006, returned to George Fox on July 1 to serve as dean of the School of Education. Before serving as provost, she worked at Corban as dean of education, director of teacher education, and professor of education and mathematics from 2002 to 2006. She worked previously as deputy director and coordinator of teacher education for the Oregon Teacher Standards and Practices Commission and was co-director of the Oregon University System’s Quality Assurance in Teaching Program. The hiring marks a return to George Fox for Linda, who taught at the university from 1996 to 2000 and was chair of the Department of Education from 1997 to 2000. In all, she has nearly 28 years of experience in higher education. Linda earned a bachelor’s degree in science education/mathematics from Oregon State, a master’s degree in math education from Portland State University, and a doctorate in educational leadership from Portland State. She lives in Sublimity with her husband Tom and attends Salem Alliance. The couple has two grown boys, Jeremiah and David.

Cliff Berger, an adjunct academic advisor and instructor at the seminary since 2004, began work as a half-time online facilitator at the seminary in June. He also teaches general studies courses for the Oregon campus of the University of Phoenix and is a faculty member in the adult degree program at Warner Pacific College in Portland. He also teaches online classes for Grand Canyon University in Phoenix. Cliff earned a doctorate in Christian education from Emmanuel School of Religion in Tennessee in 2003, a master of divinity degree from the same school in 1983, and a bachelor’s degree from Northwest Christian College in 1980. He also studied marriage and family therapy at George Fox in the early 2000s. Cliff lives in Tigard with wife Cindy and attends Potter’s Hands Church in Tigard. The couple has two teenage children, Alex and Libbie.

Tim Wheeler was hired as a custodian at the end of June. Since July of 2006, he has been the operations manager of One Source Home Solutions of San Luis Obispo, Calif., a business that specializes in custom window covering, closet, and garage products. He also has worked as a pro shop assistant at Black Lake and Avila Beach Golf Resort in Avila Beach, Calif., and as an equipment advisor and salesman at Pro Golf Discount of Yakima, Wash. Timothy attended California Polytechnic University. He lives in Newberg with his wife Michelle, who will be enrolling in the university’s PsyD program in the fall.

Dana Miller (Advancement) is leaving the university at the end of July. He has accepted a position with the M.J. Murdock Charitable Trust as senior program director for grant programs. During his 11 years at George Fox, Dana served on the senior leadership teams of three presidents. A search has begun for a new vice president of advancement. Sheri Philips will serve as the interim executive director of advancement.

Michelle Welton (Tilikum) left her retreat center director position at Tilikum on June 30. She is moving to Portland with her husband Brent, who was recently hired by the Army Corps of Engineers.

Connor Edmonds (Library) left his part-time archivist position on June 30. He has been hired to oversee the records management unit for the secretary of state’s archives division, an agency that develops records retention schedules for all cities, counties, state agencies, and special districts in Oregon.

Sarah Myhre (Undergraduate Admissions) left the university in June and moved to Texas to work at the University of Texas at Arlington.

Sharon Westfall (Registrar) left George Fox in June to work in the registrar’s office at the Portland campus of Linfield College.

Kay Winters (Library) left George Fox in June to accept a position with Oregon Health & Science University’s family medicine department.

Clark Campbell (Psychology) has been elected president-elect of the National Council of Schools and Programs of Professional Psychology. Clark will assume office at the close of the organization’s business meeting in Boston on Aug. 14, 2008. He will be president of NCSPP in 2009-10.

Bill Buhrow (Health and Counseling Services) presented a poster, “Differences in Sexual Behavior and Contraceptive Use in Religious and Non-Religious Universities: A Comparison Using the National College Health Assessment,” at the American College Health Association national meeting in Orlando in June.

Kenn Willson (Performing Arts) completed a piano concert tour in his home state of Montana this spring. He performed a “Viennese Connections” program, featuring the music of Beethoven, in various churches in Billings and his hometown of Big Timber. The presentations included a slide show that Kenn compiled during his 2006 trip to Vienna, Austria.

Mike Goins (Financial Affairs) served on an accreditation site visit team for the Northwest Commission on Colleges & Universities at Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma in April.

Ed Higgins’ (Writing/Literature) poem “week’s rain” was published in the most recent edition of the online literary magazine qarrtsiluni. This is the second poem of Ed’s that the publication has posted to its site.

Bryan Boyd (Performing Arts) and wife Kim adopted a baby girl. Sara Uriza Boyd was born May 25 in Florida and was 6 pounds, 9 ounces. She joins a big sister, Emmanuelle, and big brother, Mykel.

The husband of former HR director Marva Crecelius, alumnus Ron Crecelius Jr., died on June 11 from complications from hepatitis C and liver failure. He was 58. In addition to Marva, other survivors include two sons, including 1995 graduate Kyle Jackson.

Twila Tschan, daughter of Vicki (Student Financial Services) and Manfred Tschan, won a $1,000 scholarship for being one of the top five interviews at the America’s Junior Miss Competition contested in Mobile, Ala., June 26-28. Twila will be a George Fox freshman this fall.

Bob (Professor Emeritus) and Maurine Gilmore celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on June 21. A reception followed the Sunday morning worship at West Chehalem Friends Church on June 22. Bob sang and played the song “A Wedding Prayer,” which he wrote for their wedding 50 years ago.
